Lots of us are in the demographic where prostate cancer is on our radar. We've either been impacted by this disease, or are at an age whereby it's appropriate to have
anal annual checks with our GP.
My own experience with prostate cancer has been an ongoing and confronting journey since diagnosis and surgery 2010, and radiotherapy in 2013. This week I begin a further six weeks of daily radiotherapy for a small secondary spot of prostate cancer that has been found in my lung. Thankfully the rest of my body remains clear of disease.
Please have your regular checks.
-
Thanks StinkyPete for an important reminder.
All the best for your treatment.
-
I hope everything goes to plan with the treatment regime. You will be on top of things in no time.
-
All the best Pete.

Heaps of well wishes and positive thoughts for you Pete.. get well soon, mate.
-
Best of luck with your treatment and a speedy recovery Pete. ++
The docs are getting better at treating this problem all the time.
Was told 4 years ago that mine is 'enlarged'.
When asked, the surgeon said I'd know for sure when it was time for surgery.
From the feelings of things, it's getting close to that time now. :'(
This is just another one of those things that makes growing old(er) a total b*tch ! :OldMan

Hope things go okay for you Pete.
On a related issue my prostrate had enlarged and interfered with the urine flow so I'm on medication to keep the prostrate at its normal size. Doc said the medication would prevent problems happening later. So a tablet a day until........

Thinking of you Pete. Pray all goes well and you get 100% clearance at the end of this.

I've been down this road as well, and so far all is good. I hope yours is too Pete. I'll keep you in my prayers

Thanks everyone for your prayers and good wishes. It's been a pretty anxious time, and I'm hopeful that this third round of treatment will knock this bastard off.

Big hugs for Chris as well, Pete

Yay!!! This morning I completed my six weeks/thirty sessions of radiotherapy for the solitary secondary prostate cancer spot found on my lung :thumbsup but I need to continue to be a patient patient as I won't get any results of the effectiveness of the treatment until the 18th November. This is because radiotherapy takes some time to take full effect on the cancer cells, and they die kicking and screaming over time, and not instantly like the black hatted cowboys in the old western movies. All those involved in my treatment are confident of a good outcome, and Chris and I are heading out for a little celebration tomorrow night.
-
Great news, Pete :thumb Have a good night out tomorrow

I met with my radio-oncologist today for results following my radiotherapy for the secondary prostate cancer found on my lung. The results were not what everyone expected or hoped for.. :fp My PSA is still rising and is slightly higher than it was before treatment, perhaps from more cancer that has popped up elsewhere. :cuss :cuss So, more waiting and another review in three months. I hate the skulking nature of this disease.

Not the news we were after Pete. I hope it is more encouraging next time.

Recently I have more scans and tests, and it seems that my secondary prostate cancer has got a bit of a toe-hold in my right lung. I met with an oncologist today, and we plan to review how I am going in three months time, and may need to start some treatment then. It's all a balance between the effectiveness of the treatment and the significant side effects. I continue to feel fit, strong and healthy. :thumb

Thanks for the update Pete, I'm thinking that 3 months to next checkup will be a loong worrying time for you, it would for me, on the other hand, I'm thinking it can't be too vigorous/aggressive if they are waiting that long? Whatever, it would be a worrying time, but I would be dancing like no one was watching.
My prayers, as near as I get to them, will be for you, my thoughts are positive that you will overcome this latest attack on your health.
Take care my friend.

Just a word to the wise for others the PSA test is controversial at the best. You can have a high PSA just from riding a motorbike!
If you have symptoms or a family history of prostate cancer you should insist on a manual examination. Not pleasant but far more reliable.

That was an old post Trev and the disease has progressed since having the full round of radiotherapy treatment in Aug-Sept last year. It's now got a toe-hold in one lung, and after meeting with an oncologist a couple of weeks ago, the plan has moved on from treating in an attempt to rid my body of the cancer, to managing it. We are off next week on a two month 4WD holiday to the Kimberley, and when we get back I'll have another review to see if I need to start some aggressive treatment to reduce the cancer. Currently I have no symptoms.

Give a yell if you are in Perth, maybe we can organise a meal some where

I'm disappointed to advise that my prostate cancer, which made a reappearance in my right lung a little while back, is continuing to grow and spread more quickly. I'm having another PSA test in a few weeks time to confirm that the rapid rise in level over the last three months was not a aberrant reading, but it seems that my readings have turned the corner on the exponential curve. It's time to stop monitoring and get serious. I'll be having more scans to get a pre treatment baseline for what it's doing, and then anticipate starting both androgen deprivation therapy and chemo in a couple of months. As I said before, treatment is not expected to get rid of the cancer, but will keep it at bay for a while. Please keep Chris and I in your thoughts and prayers, as we continue to journey with this bloody disease. I'm still feeling fit and strong and have no symptoms, but know that will change.

Saw this fine old fig tree today on the Terania creek near Protestors Falls...only a few short months ago this gorge once again turned from a place of beauty to night marish horror as the heavens let leash close to a meter of rain, turing a steady stream into roaring torrent washing nearly all before it.
Yet so well rooted in rock was this wonderful old tree...:-)

A couple for weeks ago I had some scans and tests which have shown that my cancer continues to grow slowly, so it's time to stop monitoring and start treatment. Today I had the ADT implant, which is expected to knock off around 95% of the cancer cells, and I meet with the oncologist in mid October to discuss a round of chemotherapy. I remain fit and strong, and confident that this disease can be kept at bay. :thumb

Great that you feel so well. Those implants are proven to be effective, as you note. I'm a little surprised they want to add chemo to it. But they are continually fine-tuning chemo, so it isn't necessarily debilitating.

Once again, thanks for all the words of support. After long, long periods of monitoring and watching the levels going up and up, it's good to be having treatment that should kill off a fair amount of the cancer, despite the strong probability of undesirable side effects.

Update on my Prostate Cancer
The new way of treating advanced prostate cancer is to hit it with hormone therapy and chemo at the same time, which gives much better medium and long term results.
I had my first session of chemo yesterday, which went smoothly, but the pre-chemo blood test was the wonderful surprise.
After just 8 weeks of hormone therapy, and before the chemo started, 99.5% of the cancer has gone, and it now close to an undetectable level. :runyay
The oncologist and urologist both expected that the hormone therapy would kill off up to 95% so it has knocked off a huge amount more that anyone expected, and that's before any chemo.
I am advised that the chemo will not totally kill off the remaining 0.5% but with this fantastic result, I see a chance.
This is time for celebration for it's the first time in about 6 years that I've seen my PSA go down, even after two bouts of radiotherapy, and the drop is dramatic.
Once again thanks to my OzSTOC friends for the friendship and support for Chris and I during this journey. :grin :runyay

Pretty amazing numbers! Are the side effects of Chemo worth the limited effect on that remaining 0.5% ?
My oncologist has suggested that because of my tender age and general health and fitness I should be in the top 5 -10% of how well I tolerate the treatment. The nurses reckon that the majority of people these days suffer few side bad effects, but with the drug I am on, I will probably turn into a "shiny top" and loose my goatee. If the chemo knocks the level down to zero and I remain clear, I reckon it will be worth it.

I had my second chemo today
I had my second round of chemotherapy this morning, as well as my second ADT implant via another needle about the size of a screwdriver. I now know how an attempt murder victim feels, as I've been poisoned and stabbed at the same time. Happily my blood counts had bounced back into the normal range before today's treatment. Based upon how the last treatment went, I expect to feel OK for the next couple of days, and then somewhat crook until at least Friday week. I got a ride in last week with Fish, and we went to the Strathalbyn Bakery for morning tea and the Finnis General Store for lunch. I will be highly susceptible to infections of any sort for the next two weeks. Side effects that I experienced in my last "crook week" included sleeplessness for the first night (tonight), muscle aches, general fatigue, disturbed tummy with "extra special" wind, and thinning hair & beard which I expect to wave goodbye to over the next week or so. Really it wasn't too bad at all, and only lasted for a week. I now have a very nice trilby style hat. All is well, and I remain in good hands both physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Cheers

Does ALL your hair fall out, or just off your head? :crazy
Trust you get to feel really well before family festivities around Christmas. :thumbs
Oh, and keep that bike battery charged and move it off the tyre flat spot just because you can.

Yep, ALL the body hair eventually goes .... which will be odd, and there will be no photos on the forum. :eek
My thinning head hair and beard will be shaved in the next few days. :fp
My oncologist timed the treatments so that I could get to the Halls Gap RTE, and also so that I should be feeling OK for Christmas. He's a good fellow.. :beer :eat
It is my intention to move it about 300km on a day during the weeks that I'm feeling good, so it should be OK. :grin
In all of this I figure that if my hair is falling out and I'm feeling crook, the chemo is also busy killing cancer cells, and I have the perfect excuse to rest up and watch the poms get flogged in Perth. :thumbs
Thanks everyone for you on-going friendship and support. Sharing my journey has always been part of my coping strategy. :Blow

I had my third round of chemo last Wednesday, so I'm about half way through the series. Feeling fatigued and crook most of the time is wearing me down a bit, but it's good to be making progress through the treatment, and I'm doing stuff on my good days and resting when I need to. No further hair loss yet, but it's all a bit thin. :thumb

Well, I'm over half way through my treatment and seem to be coping OK. The side effects have been confined to some hair thinning so I've gone to a number 1 cut, tiredness, and an upset tummy from time to time, and a bit of "extra special" wind early in the cycle. I've put on a couple of extra kilos, which is probably some fluid retention. Overall, it hasn't been as bad as I expected, and here's a recent photo.

Looking remarkably well Pete. :grin

Chemo round 5 of 6 today. The oncologist was very encouraging regarding how well I've been tolerating the treatment, and reckons it will take me three months to get over it after the final treatment on the 13th March. I'm resting when I'm crook, and doing what I can when I'm OK.

Wishing you all the best from the west. Just got up to speed with your fight and progress to date. Sending you strength and positivity for your remaining treatment.

Its a bastard of a thing to get on top off. My PSA has been rising steadily now for a couple of years and my GP simply said it gets higher as you get older . My last visit to the GP was last December where it rose from 5.6 to 6.3 and again he said don't worry, to hell with that I insisted on seeing a specialist.
He gave me the finger test and all good , then said lets do another PSA in 3 months , again it rose to 6.5 not big jumps but he was not happy with the trend . So off I go for an MRI that is supposed to be 95% accurate, back to the specialist and the results were all clear.
Thank heavens the specialist was a belt and braces man and still was not convinced, so checked into the Gold Coast Private hospital for a full biopsy of the prostate, and there it was 5 of the 7 sample biopsies were cancerous .
His recommendation was that with the new technologies of Robotic surgery I should have it taken out. The Wesley Hospital in Brisbane is now the state of the art for Robotic surgery and I had it taken out on Monday , went home Tuesday and walking around with little or no pain that afternoon.
The good news is that the surgeon rang me yesterday and all the cancer was contained within the prostate with clear margins all around.,
So after years of 6 monthly finger up the bum checks, 6 monthly PSA tests, a negative MRI test it took a full biopsy to find the bloody thing, so if your PSA keeps rising do not be put off by your GP , get to a specialist
-
I keep reminding my friends that they should be getting regular tests and most are. I was diagnosed at the tender age of 56 and had successful "open cut" surgery which took me weeks to get over, but my margins were clear as well. However, something escaped at some time and I've been dealing with a small spot that's appeared on my right lung.
I wish you a speedy recovery, and "all clears" for years to come. :thumbs
-
Excellent outcome for Rob- I guess GPs try not to be too alarmist, but my Urologist flinches at any increase. I'm on Duodart for BPH (look it up- it might explain why you're taking twice as long to pee half as much) and that effectively halves the PSA counts. So a return of 2 is actually 4, which is all you're allowed at "our" age.
-
it is good to see the topics like this being openly discussed. We males do have a tendency to do the wrong thing, ignore the symptoms and wait too long before we drag our butts into the doctors. No one knows our bodies like we do as to what is or is not right. We just need to listen to our bodies. Well done guys
-
I had my final round of chemo a couple of days ago. Yay!! In a couple of weeks I have some tests and scans to determine the effectiveness of the chemo, and then see the oncologist on the 11th April for results. Fingers crossed and expecting a good result.

Yep. Should be good.
Just had a mate get 89 titanium miniscule canisters inserted in about 25 locations. He's not allowed to lift anything for 6 weeks. That is ruining his riding style.

Hi all
Chris and I have just got home from seeing the oncologist for my "after chemo" review. The news is all good with tests and scans showing that there is no evidence of cancer anywhere in my body. PSA is undetectable, and the various spots on my lung have disappeared. The oncologist said that it's one of the best responses to treatment that he's ever seen in any patient. He doesn't want to see me again, so I'll continue to have PSA tests every three months through my GP, and continue with the hormone therapy. He's urged me to keep up with my exercise regime which he considers to be very important. I'm so relieved as I've been very anxious about this result, more so than any previous tests. I'm now even more inspired even more to get on with the business of getting fit, strong and healthy again, as I recover from the impact of the chemo on my body. I'm starting to feel better, went back to the gym yesterday, and am working on loosing the 6kg that I put on during treatment.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement and support for us on this on-going journey. Since 2010, I've had the dreaded surgery, two rounds of radiotherapy, one round of chemo, and on-going hormone therapy, but still consider myself lucky. PSA reviews every three months will now be ongoing.
I've purposely been very public about my journey with prostate cancer in the hope that it might give strength and encouragement to others in OzSTOC who I know are also on this journey. Stay positive and strong, lean on friends, family and your faith, and even if things are not going the way you would wish, know that you are well supported and cared for by skilled medicos and those who you count as your closest and dearest. If you want a chat, PM me and I'll send you my number.

Don't I know about how lucky you can be , in 2014 I had appendicitis when they did scans to see how inflamed the appendix was they found a mass on my right kidney ( cancer ) in which I had part of my Kidney removed , without my appendix playing up I wouldn't have known about it until it was too late .since then I have annual blood tests and scans , those blood test have now shown my PSA has risen from 3.9 to 8.7 from last year to this year three months later it has dropped to 7.6 , so I am on three monthly blood tests to see if it comes down any lower otherwise more scans and biopsy will be next.

I have a mate who found he had kidney cancer in 2010, and had surgery to remove the orange sized tumor. He's been all clear ever since and celebtates life every day. :thumbsup
He and I were two of six people from our small Church who were diagnosed with cancer, all in the same week or so. Two have since passed on, but the other four of us have formed a kind of "brotherhood" of survivors.

That's a significant cluster.
When the ABC studio in Brisbane had a high incidence of breast cancer diagnoses they ended up bulldozing the building and getting a flash new one right in the city next to the river.
Excellent that you have that support group. Not everyone does...

With this raising its head and discussions at work about sick days I have made the decision to see my Financial Adviser and retire from work , I taking holidays in October and will inform Work of my intentions, I think 39 1/2 years is enough.

Best Wishes Phil. I retired 12 mts after my prostate cancer diagnosis, after which I had a significant battle with the disease for about 8 years. I'm now still clear two and a half years after finishing my last chemo treatment. Retirement is the best job I've ever had.

I can endorse the retirement sentiments. All us blokes are very susceptible to the PSA challenge. I've been managing BPH for almost 20 years. Trust you are able to get on top of your PSA count. Obviously plenty of experience and support available in this forum!

Got my results back from the MRI on my Prostate and it shows no sign of cancer at this time , it is a little on the large size which is giving the high PSA , my Doctor doesn’t want to see me now until my normal review in Sept 2021.
I've had BPH for around 20 years. It can elevate the PSA, but isn't necessarily a cancer precursor. The annual check-up covers it, and the Duodart keeps the flow going.
