Revving - St1300

Rode 1300 on the weekend and after fueling up and riding off it did not drop below 2500 rpm. Started a day or so later and while it was warming up it slowly increased to 4000 rpm before I shut it down. Any suggestions before I run it to the Dr.

Dirty fuel is my guess G&S. Try some injector cleaner - can't hurt. Might also help with the 5-way clogged junction that is discussed xtensively on this forum (and the U.S. forum (STOwners). Bad fuel can play havoc with the computerised fuel injection system.

Yep- blocked 5-way connector.  Stuffs up the feed-back info to the ECU.

Try the injector cleaner first tho cos with the good stuff u might achieve cleaning your injectors and the 5-way connector at the same time thereby negating the need to lift the tank (carefully) and remove the air cleaner housing etc. I put injector cleaner thru mine as often as recommended and Wyvern just purrs every time I fire-up his lungs.
    
Actually, Gerard I'm not quite sure about the five-way connector, ie, whether fuel passes thru it or more likely a vapour balancing system where contaminants can clog the narrow tubes. So, injector cleaner is still a good 1st option and clogged arteries the next. BTW, clogged air filters can also effect the ECI.

The 5 way is about vapour, and the way it is routed from the factory means there are low spots in which deposits ca accumulate

Gerard even just try a cup or even a litre of metho if your near full of fuel in the tank first......see if it disperses the water/crud'n'crap you seam to have collected.....seams that this is where the issue lies as it occoured after you fuelled it seams

That sounds like the throttle is not closing fully or vacuum leak.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. Being mechanically challenged I opted to run with Chris (ST2UP) idea and
- Friday night I poured 3/4 of a litre of Metho into the fuel tank
- Saturday arvo I fired up the bike and the revs (progressively) went from  2K to 4.5K and sat there for longer than it would take for the bike to warm up. Shut her down, walked away for 10 minutes, again fired her up and tacho again went to 4.5K. After a short time it reduced to 1K, which from past experience is normal.
Will try again tomorrow and touch wood all is good.

A bit late but our mechanic advises that the problme was caused by low coolant level. In simple terms my interpretation is that varying stages of revving is due to the automatic choke playing up by the wax melting (choke off) and hardening (choke on). I am not a mechanic and I don't understand how it can rev to 6000 rpm when after starting the bike from cold it "normally kicks off at 2000 rpm. Possibly someone more mechanical maybe able to explain. The upshot is that we rode it to 1770 and back and all is good but I suspect there may still be some issues with the bike losing collant. Will leave that one till it goes back to the Dr next time. Trust this may help.

On Friday Ruby wouldn't idle when I started her.  I had to hold the throttle open to get her to keep running.  When I got to the first stop, she quit and had to be restarted.
I threw 128 ml of Moreys injector cleaner in a full tank and it fixed her.
I suspect a blocked vacuum hose (you know, the dreaded 5-way connector syndrome).  I know fuel doesn't flow through there, but Moreys is a potent volatile cleaner, and I think the fumes did the trick.
Any which way, I'm a believer.  It's cheaper than the other injector cleaners and you need less in a tank.
Could be worth trying in the above case.  I personally can't see how a coolant problem would cause the revs issue.
Moreys won't do any harm, and your injectors will sparkle in the sunlight!
