Shiney’s 2013 Rally Ride
This is part 3 of a 3 part epic adventure

Part 3      The Ride Home
(aka: Riding Winged)

Day Ten
Middleton SA to Bendigo Vic, total of approximately 645 km.

Woke up to a beautiful day, a great day for a ride, loaded the bike then Streak walked up with his duffle bag to load on my bike, (I was helping out by carrying it for him as he was pillioning Teela for the first part of the ride home) so loaded that on also, handed in the keys to the cabins and we headed off.

I found that riding with only one of my highway wings (or “winged” as I called it) sucks… but I got used to it over time.
Apart form this I was pretty much locked in place with the bike loaded up as it was, although I couldn’t move much it did give me lots of places to lean against or on :grin

Anyway we rode to through some great places to Bendigo, and after riding along a dirt road found ourselves at the home of the Blue Barron (Chris) where we were going to camp for the night.

Chris put on a great dinner and we had a good chat but pretty soon it was time to call it a night, this had been the NEW longest day on the bike for me and I was still finding that I was feeling great :grin

Day Eleven
Bendigo Vic to Gundagai NSW, total of approximately 490 km.

We woke up to find that it had been raining overnight, so after drying the tents a little we packed up camp, loaded the bikes and headed off.

This time the day wasn’t looking so good and after a while it started to lightly rain.
We rode through some great areas before stopping for a bite to eat at maccas and to wait out some of the rain.

We continued on until lunch time when we stopped again at a McDonalds.
When we were leaving it started to rain so we put on the wet weather gear and off we went.

Shortly after the wind and rain picked up A LOT, well we were cruising along the highway at 110kph (the speed limit) and came upon a bit of roadworks so slowed to the new limit of 80.

As we went through this section both streak and I experienced a bit of sideways slip on a resurfaced bit of road (if we weren’t awake before that woke us up :eek)
We got through the roadworks and got back up to 110, the wind and the rain had gotten worst, this was the worst I had ever ridden through.

A bit further down the road I was hit by a gust of wind that forced me clear off the road into the emergency stopping area on the side of the highway. :eek
I gave the beast more power and forced the bike back onto the roadway.

Well after this little bit of excitement we decided to get of the highway and reassess the days riding plan. We pulled up in Holbrook and had a bite to eat, a coffee and a good think… (I also had a smoke or 2)

After a good long break the wind and rain had calmed down so we decided to cut the day short and only continue on to Gundagai.
We stayed at a nice little motel that let us store the bikes in their undercover BBQ area and we had a nice dinner at the RSL just down the road.

That’s it for the most eventful day of the trip (still feeling fine)

Day Twelve
Gundagai NSW to Sydney NSW, total of approximately 380 km.

First thing in the morning Streak informs me that it wasn’t just bad weather we had ridden through yesterday… it was Tornadoes along the NSW/Vic border! and we had been doing 110 kph in 120 kph winds… (WOW)
(It was indeed a good move to call the day early)

Anyway that was yesterday, on with today…

We rode out and got the photo with the dog on the tucker box.

Then we had a much more relaxed ride to Sydney.
We stopped for the day with Dick B and Ros and had a good chat and a bite to eat.

Shortly after this Dick and Streak took Teela to the airport to catch her flight home. I stayed and relaxed with a coffee or two and had a good chat with Ros.

Streak and Dick returned and we had dinner at the club down the road with the local OzSTOC member Peter and his partner. It was a good dinner with great conversation and a nice relaxing atmosphere. After this we wondered back to Dick’s place for a coffee before bed.

Well that’s it for the day and I still feel great. :grin

Day Thirteen
Sydney NSW to Strathpine QLD, total of just over 1’000 km.

After saying goodbye to our hosts we headed off, as we were leaving Sydney we came across some other motorcyclists on some little bikes, we rode with them out of Sydney then peeled off for the highway.
It was like having our own personal escort out of town :thumb

Not having the extra luggage on the bike (it was back on Streak’s) I was amazed at the amount of space (I’d forgotten mow much there is)

The first stop was Heatherbrae for a Pie (They are good)

This was to be our 2nd last day not the last, but Streak and I decided that we would try for home or at least see how far we could go before feeling tied. So off we went.

We rode and stopped and rode and stopped, we viewed some great country, stopping whenever we felt the need.

Anyway as the day went on I was feeling great, so we continued on. We hadn’t told our partners that we were going to be arriving home that day and so when talking to them throughout the day and into the evening we were a little vague as to what was going on :wink1

We stopped for the last time just outside Brisbane and said goodbye to each other then headed our separate ways.
I think Streak may have been possessed in this photo, but last time I saw him he seemed to have gotten over it :crackup

Streak headed for Toowoomba and I headed for Strathpine… I took some back roads and rode a bit more then was necessary just so I could make the trip over 1’000 km for the day. I did this as a bit of a personal achievement (remember at the beginning of the trip the most I had done was half this distance)

Anyway I got home and surprised the hell out of the wife, she still thought I wasn’t arriving until the afternoon of the next day. :rofl

Well that’s it for my epic adventure.
Thanks for sharing it with me Streak, thankyou to the other guys that rode with me (Sabie and the 4 D Crew), thankyou to everyone that helped out along the way and to all that managed to make it to the Rally.

Cheers
Shiney

Great post Shiney. It makes me rethink the idea of posting a story of my ride coming up next weekend to Canberra and back. I can't see it doing justice to your mammoth effort. It was good to have a chat with you and your lovely wife at Murwillumbah.

Great posts Shiney. A big thank you for being the ant-magnet and keeping them out of my abode! ;D

It certainly is good to relive the experience. It makes me even more jealous about Ballarat next year since I'm unlikely to make it over. :(

Thanks guys :-++
It has been good reliving the trip when putting this all together and reading over it again when putting it up on the forum :thumbsup

It's a shame you may not make the next Rally Rob :'(
but we'll try to take lots of pics and video so even if you don't make it, you'll still be able to experience it somewhat :thumb

As for being an ant-magnet... I guess the ants must like Shiney things too :rofl
(or my snoring makes me the Pied Piper of ants :eek)
