The Lions Road TT October 4th to 6th 2014
« on: August 13, 2014, 06:20:32 PM »
Thinking this might be something that will interest some of the Ozstoc members?  :thumbsup

The Lions Road TT.

This is just general information for riders who (like me) read the website about this event and thought the Lions Road TT was a speed trial or racing event of some kind?  :spank

The reality is it is NOT a race of any kind!

The event is in fact a fabulous opportunity for all riders to ride the Lions road at the legal speed limit without fear of any oncoming traffic!!  :grin  :thumbs

During the event the Lions road will be closed to all traffic except riders heading south towards Kyogle. Riders will be dispatched at 30 second intervals and will be required to observe and obey all posted speed limits along the way.

The advantage is you get the chance to enjoy having the road to yourself so that you can use the whole road, and you won't have to worry about any oncoming vehicles.

Yay to that I reckon!!!!!  :runyay

Anyone can participate in this event and enjoy the opportunity to ride this wonderful piece of road in a way that we never usually have the chance to do it.

The event will be held over 3 days in October are there will be lots of stalls, displays and entertainment going on in Kyogle.

I'll definately be doing it. So who wants to come along too?

Not to mention the not-infrequently falling trees.  It's happened twice in the last year that I'm aware of, stopping traffic while they were cleared.

I hope the cows take those days off

I saw some motorcyclists practicing high speed cattle avoidance near Bundarra in February this year. It sure made interesting watching. Perhaps that could be a feature of the TT along with high speed pothole jumping.

I am going with some guys from work but sadly the boss got wind of our plan to sponsor a colleague with a red hot R1 Yammie. It seems this guy is not expendable

The billing of Isle of Man meets Strugis is enough to get me up there.  I just hope they have an equivalent of Full Throttle Saloon!

The billing of "Sturgis meets Isle of Man" is IMHO very misleading for this event. I had originally formed the opinion that it was a speed event along the Lions road, but my mind was always thinking  "that can't be right?". So I contacted the organisers to seek clarification.

It is NOT a speed event, so your mate with the red hot Yammie R1 will be all out of luck if he's hoping to go racing Isle of Man style!

I suggested to the organisers that it might be best to "re-word" the website because most of the people I spoke too about the event believed from the information on the website that it was indeed a speed event race along the Lions Rd. I pointed out that the unfortunate part of the current marketing is it will likely attract a bunch of people along who will be expecting to see IOM style racing! Those people are going to be disappointed when they get there to see there'll be no TT style racing along the Lion's Rd.

The other issue is the people they do want to attract (those that would like the opportunity to ride along the Lion's Rd at the speed limit without having to worry about on coming vehicles)  may not attend because they also thought it was all about racing?

I hope they do make the necessary changes to the information on the website, because as it stands now the description of the event is way off target and open to misinterpretation.

My first impression was that it would be a speed trail as well because TT is short for Time Trial.  Knowing the Lions road well, having grown up at its southern end, I don't think the road is suitable for time trails anyway.  Even though it has been greatly improved in recent months with road works on the NSW side, it is still not perfect.

I still would like to do it, but have to way up the risk of damage to the bike from some yahoo thinking it is a speed trail, taking me and my bike out so close to the OzSTOC SS1600K.

 :think1 Decisions, decisions.
Cheers,
Gary

Oh bugger!! We having been hearing for a good year about this 320 kay plus R1 we finally thought he was going to have to put up or shut up!!

That does put a different complexion on it.  Will probably still go just to soak the biker atmosphere. I'll be watching out for cops dressed up as cows trying to ping punters trying to have a go though.

You make a good point about the possibility of being collected by some idiot on a sportsbike if the group rides I have been on are anything to gauge by.

The updated Lions TT website confirms that the cost to ride the Lions Road will be $220 per person and that allows you to ride the Lions Rd twice. (Once on the Saturday and again on the Sunday).

I have contacted the organisers to ask if there is a "single day option", as I'd be happy to ride down to Kyogle for the day, but I'm not that fussed about staying overnight given most accommodation venues are already booked out. I'd be happy enough to pay $110 to have the experience of riding the road with no chance of oncoming traffic, but I can't see me parting with twice that amount if there is no single day option?

You said what!!!!!!!!!!!!! A $110.00 bucks to ride the LIONS RD! Nah think I'll just trundle over there another week day when there is just the occasional cow, roo, pot hole etc and enjoy the scenery.
I'll bet it is a hard choice for Barry and Marissa as to which bike to take, especially with that VFR in the shed.

I had planned to go but I read they moved the Cafe racer sprint away from Kyogle because the police had concerns. Reading between the lines the police are going to be all over the run on the Lions Road as well.  The way it was originally promoted I thought it would be fantastic but it appears to have been watered down a lot.

It is a long way to go to watch a bunch of fat guys ride hogs up and down the main street of Kyogle.

LOL ....  I can appreciate the sentiment Roadrunner. I was happy to pay the $110 as basically a donation to improving the road, but we have other plans now for that weekend.

Having no on-coming traffic probably wouldn't make me much faster around the Lion's Road anyway.  There are other hazards (road surface, wildlife, domestic beasts) that demand respect.
Anyway, I'm over showing how clever I am am shaving milli-seconds off corners.
There's scenery to be soaked up, and the reassuring purr of those valves all ticking away at work under me.

In case anyone looked like having fun, the Fun Police  :law have just put their oar in:

Seems the NSW Cops can handle the dramas that are sure to ensue.
