Title: New Tyre Decision - PR4 or PR3
Post by: nate on June 30, 2014, 04:08:19 PM
Hi guys,

Been offered a what seems to be a good price on a set of Pilot Road 3 (brand new), whilst getting a price for a set of PR4's.  The difference is about $90 fitted.  Both sets are ST13 size (F:120/70-18  R:170/60-17)

What would you choose and why?  I'm leaning towards the PR4's (GT version), but don't really know a great deal about the PR3's.

If I choose the PR4's, then I'll post the place where someone else can purchase the PR3 at the discount price.

Cheers!
Nate

Save ya 90 bucks.  The PR4s are good, but not $90 gooder.
You'll get over 20,000 kays out of either.
If you're a hardcore twistie pusher you might justify the extra for the PR4s, but not for average riding.
I got over 24500 km out of my last pair of PR3s.

PR3s are a great tyre.  I might get 15,000kms out of my set, which is about the same as the better tyres on the ST1100 used to get.  To get 24,500 the air in the tyres would have to be pretty solid as no rubber would be left.

been running 3's for a while now, every 8 months or so. getting around 22k, agree with biggles and saaz.
if you are trying for max k's they do "cup" which makes them feel horrible.
you get a new bike every time new ones fited

TWO years?  To put on 24,000 kms?  Are you going to leave it in the shed for a year?

I just bought the PR4 GT because I regularly pillion. They feel great (the advice I got was go easy for the first 100km because they are slippery new). Did not know that.

Had them in the wet with the Ulysses guys on Wednesday and they stuck like glue (no pillion)

I bought the rear tyre before Christmas and the guys at Ongmac Lismore stuffed up with the front as they didn't have the 18 (plenty of 17 that I believe the 1300's use) so I was riding with a new rear and an oldish Bridgstone on the front.
Michelin had NO 17's in the country according to the guys at Ongmac. So after 2 months I decided to call Michelin direct, who put me in contact with their distributor, who tracked one down for me in Moorooka (Brisbane). I got their last one so I suspect now there are none in the country. Michelin have a shipment but no-one knows when or how many.

Love them but if you are looking for the PR4 you may have to wait, so maybe the PR3's or another brand.

I'm glad you got a set of PR4's they are truly a great tyre, they must be really popular because there always seams to be a shortage
here in Australia, I had to get mine from Jake Wilson in USA because there was none in Oz. There seems to be just a few filter through in ST specs from time to time. You just have to be in the right place at the right time
If anyone wants a set I would order them in a month before you need them most bike shop will hold them for you

Morning ST'ers
Reading through the Forum, particularly TYRES, I am astounded at the variety we choice and believe are the best (we are human and there fore all different)
For the last eight years, I ran a variety of brands and always have gone back to Avon.
Never had any difficulty with availability of ST1100 sizings.
When required, I simply ring Dave Oliver at Tyres For Bikes, Albion in Brisbane and have usually been ready to fit within 3 days, if not in stock.
Dave is a terrific bloke and also provides Discount to members of Ozstoc.
Next time you require tyres ............... give Dave a call - I'm sure he will do his utmost to fit your needs in a minimum time frame at realistic cost --- freight Ozzie wide. I have Nil affiliation>
