Hi all
At about $400 AUD per year, Spot is just getting too expensive for me, so I'll let my subscription lapse when it runs out later this year. I'm now looking for an Android phone based tracker and wonder what people are using. Bubbler was to "go to" a few years ago, but wonder what else may be around.
-
What are you looking to do with it? I use a couple.
Greenalp is good for people seeing where you are now (you can turn it on or off anytime) but it only stores about four hours worth of points. If it's moving I'm moving (or someone has stolen my tablet).
If you want to store a whole trip and put it on a map I use GPS logger. It doesn't show a map people can open like Spotwalla did but stores the points on your device. Uploading them to google maps at the end of the day is easy.

Pete, Zoleo might be the go for you. After the first 3 months you can suspend your plan for $6.50/month. See details here: https://www.keeptrackgps.com.au/pages/zoleo-pricing (https://www.keeptrackgps.com.au/pages/zoleo-pricing)

I'm looking for something that will provide a link that will show my location on a map, that I can share with family and friends.
-
I believe that can be done for an extra $7.95/month taking the basic plan up to $40/month
-
Greenalp will do that. The app is called Real-Time GPS Tracker 2 in google play. I'll send you a DM to show you what is shows.
-
Bodo I'm guessing Greenalp isn't an emergency beacon thingy in that if you come to grief outside of mobile range it won't send the cavalry?
-
No. It just shows your movements in real time that anyone can see if they have the link.

That's getting a bit rich at $480 per year.
-
Excepting most months you'd be in suspension mode so no where near $480/pa. Use Greenalp when riding around the settled areas, the Zoleo is used when going off grid.

I have decided to stick with Spot. It is pricey but I like it because it doesnt rely on the phone system.

I believe it comes down to the area you wish to have coverage.
If you’re largely operating in a mobile coverage area undertaking low risk activities go with a mobile application that essentially joins the dots in a breadcrumb trail in areas without coverage.
Worth considering that while 5G in regional/rural roll out is on the increase, and it’s an application that supports very high data speeds it doesn’t function particularly well when actually mobile at speed near as well as the lower data speed of 3G does when your travelling at highway speeds. Will need more towers to make up this shortfall that may not be forthcoming in the near future…..if at all.
I have recently migrated from SPOT and my Iridium Satelite phone to ZoLeo as we wish to still have the PLB application and just be able to txt message with family/friends etc. Then put plan on hold when not in use.
Cheers

There is an app called “Relive”
Or iPhone has a setting to share your location with family & friends. It will also find your parked car or any of your other devices . . Tablet, laptop, watch or phone.

An App tracker is the last thing I want!
It pees me off enough now with Google knowing every move I make... :well

Here are a couple of apps that may be worth checking out: :popcorn
Yamaha’s MyRide: https://www.yamaha-motor.com.au/discover/technology/myride-app (https://www.yamaha-motor.com.au/discover/technology/myride-app)
And no, you don't need to have a Yamaha...

Google is mainly tracking what you are searching for so it can spray you with ads, difficult for you to turn off.
The iPhone “find my” is turned on and off by you, only share your physical location with you and those you choose, not the World and not for smothering you with ads. I’m sure the android operating system would have something similar. Costs nothing.
