Rally drivers set out to prove electric vehicles can go the distance even in the Outback

A group of rally drivers have set out on a 10-day trek from Perth to Sydney today, re-creating part of the journey from the famous 1968 London to Perth marathon rally. And one team will brave the Australian outback with an electric vehicle, in an attempt to prove electric cars aren't just made for city driving.

We have a fleet of mobile DC chargers capable of delivering up to 100kW in the bush, some powered by waste vegie oil generators on trucks and some by a 125kWh battery van. Ampol are offsetting all the diesel they supply for the actual trucks, so our whole trip is as near to carbon neutral as possible.

We be passing through Port Augusta at midday on 1st November (check with David Cann), Broken Hill overnight on 2nd November, Wangaratta on 3rd November, Lakes Entrance on 4th November, Cooma on 5th November (Cooma Car show), and finally Warwick Farm on 6th November.

It is possible with support vehicles however earlier this year it took 4 days to drive a Tesla from Perth to Port Augusta.

In August two new model Ys 'raced' around Australia from Perth. One went clockwise, one went anticlockwise and the fastest one did it in 14 days.
