What route are you taking to National Rally 2013?
« on: August 08, 2012, 10:15:03 PM »
So your going to the National OzSTOC Rally 2013....

Have you started thinking about what Route your going to take to get there yet?

Are you going to travel direct?

Thinking about taking the scenic trip?

Have you considered OzSTOC Members who are not going to the Rally you could say hello too or even pinch a bed for the night from along the way?

Food for thought....

Here is a rough example of what I am thinking of doing at the moment:

National rally route for Streak

Day 1

Toowoomba to Tamworth 500km, Ozstoc member I can say hello to: STEVEO

Day 2

Tamworth to west wylong 610km, Ozstoc member I can say hello to: TONY

Day 3

West wylong to Mildura 550km, Ozstoc member I can say hello to: LONERIDER1

Day 4

Mildura to Middleton 430km, Arrive at National Rally 2013  :thumb

Total trip down 1,990km

At this stage I am taking a fairly relaxed view to my trip down as I will be covering some country I have never seen before, and I would like to take it in  :), and of course respective members wanting to say hello to me  :whistle

Well, as I mentioned in another thread, I'm seriously considering it. Questions I asked myself, in this order were:
Q1. How far is it?    A. F**k - a long way!
Q2. How far am I prepared to go in any given day?   A. not more than 5-600km being my first long trip - thinking fatigue/safety here.
Q3. Hotel/motel or camping?   A. camping if possible (crap - I need a new tent!).
Q4. Where can I get 95RON fuel?     A. Probably everywhere now - but need to check (?).
Q5. What's interesting along the way to break up the trip?   A. Not much on the Nullarbor. Treat that as a "camping under the stars" experience.
Q6. Will I have enough annual leave in the new job by the time it comes around?   A. Maybe. Perhaps they'll let me take some more. Perhaps my wife will have had me "spend" it earlier.
Q7. What do I pack (no trailer)?   A. Very little.... time to start a list.

After the Q5, I made a route-plan..... here - what do you all think?  I think the marks (ie. overnighters) need a little adjustment to balance it out though.

Q. Why Kalgoorlie, are you going looking as its off the road a far bit.

Q. Why 95, are you riding a 1300???

Streak, your route is almost exactly what I as thinking. I see no point in rushing down there, better to see some of this beautiful country on the way instead of white-line fever. Are you camping or motel-ling?

I am not sure as yet, camping i think is a great option, but am also going to see who has a spare bed along the way.....

Just a bit of yard to camp on would be a bonus too if people don't mind (this would give access to a toilet and more people to chat to)

I'm planing to camp on the way but haven't thought about where to stop/set up along the way, if there are a few people camping we might be able to camp for the night at the same areas, even if people don't ride together (some might decide to stop to look at things others don't feel inclined to)

Just an idea :grin

I have a rough idea of how to avoid the Adelaide suburban area by having my route through the hills instead. Either that or I'll just go and play with the traffic anyway.

Guys, it might be worthwhile dividing this topic in to three sub-topics, North (Brisbane etc), East (Melbourne/Sydney Etc) and West (Perth etc), cause it's likely to get bigger than Ben Hur and very confusing otherwise! :crazy

Good idea there Wizz. Perhaps sub threads in line with the members attending from each state/territory list Streak put together.

I haven't planned anything concrete yet, but may do a coast run over a few days and call into Colac in Vic to visit mum.  Just means I have to do the Great Ocean Road and all those nasty twisting roads inland to Colac and back again.

The roads going inland are even better. And there are a few other country roads in there that us locals know about..

I've done the Gold Coast/Sunshine Coast Adelaide ride a few times or more , doing the inland route and the Coast rout via the Great Ocean rd on the way to Adelaide and all is good. Some really good places to have a rest/sleep on the side of the road.
In fact at the rest area on the left between Batemans Bay and Narooma underneath the picnic table on the right of the toilet block on a beam their still may be a Watch and a Ring I left their January last year.
No reward is offered :rofl

My suggestion from Brisbane would be inland to Sydney. Princess Highway to Melbourne then Geelong and then the Great ocean rd and then the site

I'm thinking I might turn right out of my street, right onto Stuart Hwy and follow it all the way to Pt Augusta, then turn left and continue on into Adelaide......  :grin

Actually planning to do a SS1600 on day one, then continue on to complete a Centreline36.  With some luck, our new government may have abolished open road speed limits here by then and I'll be able to do it even easier.  :runyay :runyay :runyay

If we can get both our Annual Leave to fall in place our overnighter's will be Dubbo, Hay, Renmark, Sellicks Beach on the way down, travel home via Beachport, Port Campbell, Ocean Grove, Lakes Entrance, Yackandandah, Canberra, Newcastle and home. Haven't travelled GOR, Vic/NSW high country on a bike.

Having some smaller days to enjoy GOR & High country, about half our nights with family or friends.

Cheers

Perth to Middleton hugging the coast all the way with the exception of dirt roads and avoiding back tracking.
About 4,100 kms. Probably allow 7 days easy travelling
