Title: 2012 Border Run
Post by: Turtle on January 17, 2012, 09:39:40 AM
2012 Border Run

1st Saturday in August

Border Village SA/WA BP Service Station

Take a look in FarRiders for past Border Run reports, here is a taste of what it's like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roYGeDraaOs&feature=youtube_gdata_player

More than 100 bikes turn up just for a drink and meal then head home in the morning

And you get to see the Pudding that has travelled the roads since the 70's

google tells me it's only 2981 kms away.
would like to go but will have to plan daily distances better than I have in the past.
Anyone interested in going to the  black tie dinner at Mungalla in March.
On farRiders site. Fund raiser for something.

Hi,

To give an idea of the SA section to WA border I put in my usual fuel stops from Port Augusta to the border. I've had a few trips to Karratha and Perth towing the trailer at a more leisurely pace of around 90 to 100kph. If you coming from QLD then Broken Hill is probably the way you'll come. From there to Peterborough it's just under 300kms and fuel would be needed to get to Port Augusta.

Hope that helps a little.

Not the last bit that is the bother it's the beginning.
Just sent an email out to dirranandi to find out what the roads are like.
Don't want to do the run along the usual route ( sorta bin there dun that) so may turn off at St George see him then down through lightning ridge and across to bourke and down.
only a couple a kms differerence.

I'm going to carry some maps this time.
Last trip through that area was coming back from perth.
Half asleep misread signs and turned off at Kimba and finished up in Cowell ( where I'd been 10 days before - good barman poured me the right beer when I walked in this time)
Took a Whyalla turn off instead of Port A and did a huge chunk of the run on roads which were under construction. Grade limestone rock and gravel for what seemed forever to a very tired rider.
But when it's finished it wil be an awesome bike run from memory.

I know it's been a little while (late 2008) since I've been in that area myself but I thought road from Kimba to Cowell was dirt.
If you ended up in Cowell it would have been a straight run to Port A going through Whyalla.

As far as I am aware the only turn off to Whyalla (heading east) is at Iron Knob on the Eyre Hwy (National 1) or the dirt road from Kimba

Don't know about yours but my 1100 doesn't handle to good on dirt/gravel roads so I avoid them.

Filled out the paperwork to get the Friday and Monday off from work. I also did the same for all 3 West FarRides.

:cuss my boss wondered how many long long weekends I wanted each year, my reply was only 4!!!

Sounds like we might need to do some sort of East meets West Ozstoc meet, and do something to mark the event to celebrate Ozstoc being back up and running again.  Queensland may be left out of this for once :)

I just registered for this years border run.

Not that it doesn't mean much as far as the bike is concerned as it just about knows how to get there on it's own after 4 times each way across there.

Heather will be with me as well, so it will be a first for her doing the ride to the border.

Be nice to catch up with you as well and we'll be camping as well, wherever that may be. It will also be the first sort of long trip we've done with this trailer rather than just using it for shopping trips....lol.

While the Border Run is not an Ozstoc ride, seems like a few are planning to go. At this stage I have the following (in no particular order):

Turtle
Alans1100
Malcolm6112
Apache
ATRay
Gavo
Scarp
Mitch
IanB
Saaz
Lionel

I know that within this group there is also a crossover with FarRiders of which there are 53 (58 including passengers) of which I am one.  If anone else is going let us know so we can go find you.  If you see a white ex police ST1100 likey to be me or Lionel, both with ACT plates.

Well I have my seat being reshaped and covered so its going to be a good test run to the Border and back fingers crossed or im sitting on my sleeping bag  >:()

I guess for us Perth riders we better plan a meet point for the Friday and the overnight stop last year I stayed at Cocklebiddy the night  that was my first day then onto the Border next morning Im thinking I will do a camp just past Balladonia  food and fuel there then find a camp spot down road with a nice warm camp fire and a port or 2 or 3 or 4  :beer.......... Does anyone else have some suggestions or where they want to stop the night as we all are different riders and its a long run out its about 962kms to Balladonia for the day just shy of 1000kms

So far everything is on track for us, the rear tyre has been changed and so has the oil and filter. Not often those two items get done at the same time. I even managed to lubricate the side stand pivot point as well. I even checked the rear brake pads and after 40,000kms still have about 50% left. Amazingly; when I put it all back together,  it still worked.........lol. All I need to do now is organise the trailer etc for our over night stops.

Subject to the OK from the doc and physio ( bad bursitis in the left shoulder from work ), I plan on leaving Perth around 15:00 on Friday, no overnite stop. Probably straight thru to Nullabor and back to the check-in at Border Village, then on to Balladonia for a couple of hours sleep!! :eek :eek Then back to Perth before 15:00 Sunday!

Then after all that, LOTS of sleep.  :fp

Yep, one those IBA rides!

Hope to see everyone there. Somehow I managed to organise a RTE on Sunday, away for two nights straight after, then leave first thing Thursday morning to do the Border run.  So packing on Saturday, bike maintenance done today (oil and filter, tyres, perhaps even a wash tomorrow).  I will have to have words with whoever organises my calendar :)  I don't even have time to buy new gear for the bike like a Tyre Pressure Monitoring system...

Heather wants to leave a little earlier, so I made it Midday, now looks like 10am. Don't mind that as we can have KFC for lunch at Port Augusta..........

Just back from the Border caught up with Saaz & Turtle shame some of the others couldn't make it, next year maybe.

I started the home leg from Port Augusta at 5.45am on Monday and hit Darwin at 5.15am on Tuesday that's a Centreline 24 in FarRider terms, the ST as usual performed like a champion even fended off 2 roos and around 20 birds without a glitch. :thumbs :thumbs

Just got in myself. Great to meet up with Turtle and Ozrider. We followed Oz's centreline while on the road, well done!  Wish we had the NTs 'speed limits' as it would have made the trip quicker or able to go further in the same time.  Clocked up near 5000kms taking the touristy route of Canberra-Renmark-Ceduna-Border Village-Streaky Bay-Broken Hill-Nyngan-Canberra.  Only one 100km day, all the rest only a few 800+days and some lazy 600km days.  Tyres are a bit flat in the middle.

9 kms over 75 bucks zero points

seemed to be interested in the HIDs but that must have been a ploy to keep me subdued.

Next time be 40 over, they wont turn around and chase you, as they would have to front the Boss.

Sounds like a bit of revenue raising. What sort of tolerance do they usually show ie 5kph over or less?  We were doing 120kph most times in 110kph zones and barely raised any interest out in the more remote areas (SA and NSW).

Normally 15K+, they may have been told of the run and to use zero tolerance. Or they had a slow week and needed the stats... :|||| :||||
