Now I can feel like as proper member because I have a bike
« on: December 01, 2018, 02:19:00 PM »
Today I bought a bike and although its my plan to harvest the engine for my Triumph Herald I at least feel that my membership here is now valid!
She is a 98 non ABS model with 122000km on the clock the carbs seem to need a little attention as the idling is just a bit iffy but otherwise  the engine sounds very  good to me.
I was quite surprised to find that the crankcase and the cam covers are painted black which looks like a factory finish to me  anyway if any of my fellow owners up here in Queensland are looking for running gear like front forks wheels original exhaust cans rear shock seat and bodywork panels please let me know and I will sell them cheaper than the wreckers will ask.

Oh yeah  I am also wondering if anyone here recognizes the bike which has a ST owners sticker on the rear fender

That's an interesting mod to the fairing.  Presumably she's had a run-in at the front end!   :eek
The rest of the panels and seat look to be in good nick for its age.  Store them carefully.  There's always someone looking for something (usually panniers and top boxes, as you would expect).
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Yes Biggles  very definitely had a front end bingle! there is a small dent in the rad but it does not seem to leak so should be OK I am thinking that this might be a privately imported Canadian/USA bike because there is no on/off switch for the headlight which seems to be on all of the time. The forks have different colored caps on them as if the one on the left is from another bike . There is this tiny after market speedo which is really hard to read but the half dismantled original cluster was in the box of bits which is good because I want to use the Honda tacho even if I have to make a new housing  for it on its own.I would like to use the  triumph temp gauge but will have to see how close the resistance of the Honda unit is otherwise I will  graft the Honda mechanism into a pommy instrument case

The headlights are always on . The covers and block will have been painted to improve the "Naked" look, that isnt a factory finish..

With the black finish that’s going to look very smart sitting up front in the herald.

Silly question from a non-mechanic....  the cam covers are twice the length of the cylinder block. What’s in the front half?
A man rides on his STeed, says “Why am I short of attention? Got a short little span of attention”.

You can call me Steve, with apologies to Paul Simon.

I am interested in the Herald mod, I am in the process of rebuilding a 63 1200 and also have a spare 1100 engine in the shed

So at what age does this "old enough to know better" kick in?
I believe in the "hereafter", every time I go to the shed I have to think "what am I here after"

Hi  Brock
The guy I bought the bike from did not take the engine out of the frame or paint the engine and the black simply looks too good to be a rattle can job. But thanks for telling me that they are all headlight always on . My plan is to rationalize the harness so that there is just what I need to make the engine start and run and relying on the the existing car wiring for all ancillaries like lights ect  so I can use the car switches as normal

Yeah I think its going to look amazing when you flip the front and expose what has to be a total beast of an engine! If the truth be told I am a bit surprised at just how gloriously chunky the lump is Its likely that I will run a different air box and at present I'm thinking about one like the picture

Well I would be more than happy to help and to be a trail blazer for you to do the same in your Herald!
The biggest issue for this swap is obviously going to be the need to provide reverse and for that I have a cunning plan, namely using an electric reverse set up because the specialist Forward reverse gearboxes are very expensive (more than a grand!) and I simply can't afford that. So I have manged to get a copy of the necessary CAD file to have a "starter gear" Lazar cut from 10mm stainless which I can then have tig welded onto the adaptor that will attach  the Honda front uni joint to the prop shaft. The prop will of course have to be a two piece unit with a bearing and I have a Corolla shaft that will supply the joint and the bearing all I will have to do is swap my existing front yoke for the one that is now allowing the Toyota engine to mate to the Triumph Diff and Robert will be your father's brother. Anyway I will take video and lost of pictures which will help you  out.
At present I am thinking that I will cut up the bike frame to harvest the bits I will need to make a mounting cradle for  the motor because I am lazy and don't want to waste my time fabricating the connections to the block from scratch and I simply don't think that the bare frame would be that saleable anyway I have it and why re-invent the wheel?

Your Herald will of course have the later and stronger Chassis and probably Disc brakes as well which is very good indeed even so I hope that you do the same swap just to compare notes

Happy to share that I have sorted out the idling problem which has turned out to be entirely due to the idle a adjuster cable being fully unscrewed form the carbies and boy was it a pain to reconnect! The fuel tank had to come out to get to it thankfully access will be a lot better when the engine is in the Herald. The Tacho is not at present connected  so I have set it by ear and it sounds very good now. I think that the carbs could benefit from being properly balanced but that can wait until I have the installation sorted.

re worked the headers so that the engine will fit the car It was a slow and tedious jigsaw puzzle but now I can move onto making engine mounts and the plan there is to have a removable cradle front and back that will  carry all for the stuff that will may the engine run, the coils CDI box relays etc then the connection to the car systems will be just a few wires maybe just one multi pin plug, the mail lead for the starter and the main ground wire

Been a while and I have made a fair bit of progress, in fact I have the car running and driving and here is what I posted to my Facebook after my drive to the RTE in Dayboro on Sunday
Quote
I actually took the Herald on a decent test drive today and discovered a couple of minor issues, firstly there was a truly awful noise when I backed off the throttle which I worked out was the reversing gear just giving the starter motor gear the most fleeting of kisses once I got home I found that there were only the slightest
of marks on just a few of the teeth I was able to fix that by putting slightly thicker spacers between the reversing motor and its mounts. I was also able to find a suitable spring to put between the drive shaft retaining collar and the front yoke this is a far better arrangement than just trying to take up all of the slack and in many ways its just like the Honda arrangement on the donor bike I jacked up one of the rear wheels so I could run her up and down through the gears
and thankfully the horrible noise I experienced was gone and she seems a great deal smoother
Some may recall that I made the decision to solid mount the engine but now that I have driven it a a bit more I think that decision was a mistake so tomorrow I will treat myself to a new 5 inch grinder so that I can modify my engine mounts to include rubber mounts I will use the ones from a Suzuki Samurai transfer case I have a couple but I need three. Further I need some more steel to make said mounts
The reason I went with the solid mounting was because I did not want to incorporate the tail-shaft bearing mount into the engine sub-frame but now its clear that is what I will have to do and fortunately I don't think it will actually be as hard as I was expecting it to be.

Performance wise though the engine was quite impressive propelling the car quite nicely with plenty of grunt on the climb back up the mountain and a willingness to rev that is so alien to the 4 wheel experience.
Finally the reason for my drive to Dayboro was to attend the ST1100 OC RTE event and it was nice to catch up with some guys who get it and of course they had some nice things to say about the project which I found very encouraging

some guys at the RTE were asking how I connect the engine to the drive train  and the picture above should explain it well enough
