Hi All, I have just replaced the fuel filter on my STeed. The process is far more involved than what is on the US ST site.
But it is done now.
The best outcome so far is that when I turned the filter upside down a small cup full of water and other nasties came out.
My ST has only 46,000ks on it. So I don't know where Honda get their recommendation from for a 100,000k change.
Will do a run tomorrow and see what improvement this has made.

The reason that I did change the filter was the even idle speed and running at under 2500 rpm in traffic. Made riding in traffic very jerky
(not the kind you chew) and unpredictable as to what response you would get when having to get on the gas.

Hi Gavo, yes I have just been on a 100k ride through Brisbane and the idling speed is now consistent and slow running under 2500 rpm is as smooth as a baby's bottom. Also bike will now accelerate from 2000 rpm while traveling on undulating roads while riding behind slow riders without wanting to show off and get on the gas and overtake.

Well worth doing. Fuel consumption is just on 18 k's/litre and that in city traffic.

Hey Tony, perhaps it wouldn't hurt to run a couple of tanks of juice with petrol treatment in in to clean out fuel lines and injectors after all that tripe?

Just a thought.

Cheers, Diesel

Thanks Diesel have already run one container of fuel system cleaner which is actually 2 tanks of fuel.
So much for pre-delivery of second hand bikes eh!!! Not to mention that the St would be thoroughly detailed
before delivery. LOL.

I think the dealer deserves one or more these   o:) o:) o:)

Completed this task today using the link provided.......all good although I would add that when you remove the second hose for the fuel return line to have ready a piece of hose to drain into a container the fuel still above the base of pickup in the tank from this nipple on top of the pump.

Just done this exercise myself and wondered what the inside of the filter looked like.  The jar contains some of the stuff that came out of the filter when I removed it.  Be interesting to know what the colour of a new filter is like but I don't feel like cutting a new one up!  Also the two little plastic stacks of "beads" were in the lower tank.  I presume Honda put them there but what are they?  There's no mention of them in the manual.

Finally, I had a bit of drama after going to top up with fuel after putting everything back together.  Looks like the gasket/packing got pinched or twisted somewhere along the way and about 3-4litres of 95 Vortex poured over bottom of the bike and onto the driveway at the servo.  I think it got written up as numbnut customer incident.  Doh!

The beads look like a lead additive some numpty has put in there leading me to make the assumption that the lower tank has been prised open before.
The exercise of getting in & out was time consuming when i did it but from memory after reading another thread that patience and being careful was the order of the day.I think i ordered a new gasket for the occasion too.Hopefully it will fix your dramas or at least help rule it out.
