Title: ST1300 Gearbox is terrible
Post by: John D on April 30, 2013, 06:41:33 PM
Hi guys,

I have a 2008 ST1300 here in Perth WA, the gearbox is terrible, does anyone know anything about gearboxes, could one of you guys (experts) take it round the block for me and give me the benifit of advise, new, replace bit, put up with it etc.

The bike would be wonderful if it actually changed up and down without a fight.

Hi John, no problem. There are a few who live close by. Two questions though - do you know what brand and type of oil is in it? and, how many KMs has it done?

Further to the last post, can you describe your symptoms. That would help get the right info too you.

Thanks a lot you guys, I'll try my best from the office to answer these.

Not sure what oil is in it, last serviced by Honda at Victoria Park (Albany Highway) so it should be right.

Looked at the oil over the week end (through the windo) and it looks a bit shitty also too full by a tad, need to rock the bike back a shade to see the top in the window

Kilometers from memory 48k service was at 45k, Symptoms - Better when the bike is just started for say 2 km. phisically a pull to go up 1st through 2nd with a loud crack as she jumps in. 3 to 4 is better 4 to 5 is almost sweet.

Let me know if you need any more, I'm in Booragoon near Garden City.

And thanks a millon.

The problem sounds similar to my 1100 after I did my first oil change on the bike at 24,000kms

I think it's more related to the clutch and the mixing of two different brands of oil. Went away after about a week (400kms) and no problems since.

1 to 2 usually clunks a bit on both bikes, though different oils can have a marked effect.

OK when cold, sounds like the grade of oil is a bit thin. Some of us have even used Diesel grade oils to good effect. There are a few different threads about oils in here. A clutch fluid change may also have a benefit.

Sounds a bit like sticky clutch plates, but strange that is better cold as usually it improves. So many variables to check out, such as clutch operation (fluid change - if it gets worse when hot then maybe water in the clutch fluid so needs a bleed), oil used, has the gear change mechanism been lubricated lately, etc.  Very hard to diagnose a problem like this remotely. Any ST13 I have ridden has a nice gearchange.

Many thanks all you guys,

I have mailed to Honda Tech for the definative official view. I'll post it for all your interest.

Then I think I better do something with the oil and bleed / change the clutch fluid

If that dosent work I'm getting a heavy pair of boots and ear muffs, that should make it go away.

Try pre-loading the gear lever before changing, it helps to make the changes smoother on the 1100.

Patience? Never - not according to wifey anyway. I've always said there's nothing wrong with instant gratification.

My bad though. I did read it was a weekend jobby. I put it down to me getting old. My short term memory isn't so good now... My short term memory isn't so good now.

Regardless, good luck and don't hesitate to call on us nearby members if you need help.

Hi Guys,

Thanks again for all the support, the week end came and I did the work.
The result was on the whole good, engine runs like a dream with the 7100 oil. I would like to thank the Gorilla who screwed on the oil filter for costing me half the morning and a few cuts and bruses as well to get it off. The trick was a two front attack with the belt type tool and the 3 prong over the back type working in combination with a stratigic hammer, a third arm would be bloody handy too.

Oil was a bit brown and mirky and I need to invest in a better catcher than a 2 litre milk carton, still we live and learn.

I changed out the final drive oil (probably not necessary) it was a clean as the new but the magnetic plug was showing a good deal of black metalic dust stuck to it.

Now the clutch, I flushed out the fluid and changed to clen new DOT4, the reservoir was quite dirty so I gave it a good clean out, after I gota good bleed on the new fluid I gave it a try, absolutely blood aufull. I did it all again, this time the old way with a submerged valve, and working the spanner in sequence with the lever to get mode very tiny bubbles out. The result was glorious, like a rolls royce. Short lived, I took it for a run and after about 20 mins it was getting back to the old story, but not so bad.

All in all things are much better and it all seems to be related to the clutch, any ideas, maybe do it again (bleeding) or does anyone think it's maybe seals ?

Sorry guys, there is no spell checker on this forum so you may need at time to interperate what is there.

I had a lot of fun Saturday playing with it and more fun on Sunday giving her a good test.

All thought / comments / assistance very welcome and rewarded with a drop of the old amber.

Thanks - John.

John, there may still be a little air in the clutch, so give it a try again later.

What I learned from Poppy Dave was.......

Dave saw the mechanics on the police bikes use a 1 ltr container with the side cut out of it. They are small enough to go under the filter against the main stand.

As for the clutch, I found that the bleeder allowed air in if it was opened too far.

Thanks Malcolm,

I didn't get to it last night, so I'll make sure when I do it later to just crack the bleed valve a little.

Form doing the oil and filter on the 1100 I use an old 4L oil container with the side cut out and the pourer with cap left complete. This will hold all the oil that comes out and when I'm finished I undo the cap and pour directly into an old 4L container for disposal. I always put a piece of cardboard underneath just to mop up those few drips that always miss getting caught no matter how careful you are.

Yes the ST is gold, it's one of the 50th Anniversary models that Honda produced in limited numbers in 1999. There are a few around but overall I believe less than 50 were allocated to Australia. At one stage there were 5 of them in Cairns at the same time however now there are only 2 that I know of here. There are several of them on this forum here and in the UK.
