Title: What have you done to get healthy?
Post by: Streak on January 29, 2013, 10:18:54 PM
I have lost 11kg in 10 weeks, and I am now wearing the smallest Jeans I have owned in 3 years  :thumb

Teela is up to 12kg lost with almost 13 inches lost from her waistline in the same time!

Anytime Fitness Toowoomba have really been first class in helping us reach our goals, and helping us lose weight and get fit responsibly.

We have cut most of the high sugar (soft drinks, junk food), and just started eating more salad, fish, and eating smaller less supersize portions...

Our motivation is national rally, and our wedding coming up, but most of all was to feel good about ourselves and get some energy back in our lives.

All of which got me thinking...

Have you had the life moment that said I am getting healthy? And why did you do it?

Gee, I won't recognise you so let me know who you are!  Very well done as it takes a lot of commitment and willpower   :thumbs.  I have always been about the same weight, but I have gone from 65kgs when I was 18 to 72kg just now..must be old age and all that extra muscle  :whistle

Well done Graham and Teela.
 :runyay :runyay :runyay :runyay

My "aha moment" was about 2 1/2 years ago.  Since then I have lost 50kg and 6 dress sizes (I actually kept a pair of jeans to remind me of where I was, and my 12yo daughter and I can both climb into them together).  Initially lost 40kg in 12 months, then the last 10kg took me another 12 months.  Still backslide occasionally, especially when my asthma prevents me from exercising, and at the same time have medication that increases appetite.... But still, I'm slimmer now than I was at 15.  I have a jacket that was tailored for me all those years ago that is now way too big.

Streak and Teela have the secret - less crap in - soft drinks, junk food. (Says he who is a chocaholic.)
Saturated fats and sugars - it's all on the labels so just take a look and keep to the lower limits.
Surprising how much of those two is in the processed foods we eat.
I suppose most people excuse the crap food by saying they are time poor but it's not really an excuse, just laziness.
I watched that series of Jamie Olivers where he produced 15min and half hour meals.
Didn't skimp on the goodies or the taste but by changing the ingredients slightly knocked out truckloads of calories.  :eat

Then again looks who's lecturing. I got to 68kg eating junk food for lunch and sitting in front of a computer all day.
Been 63-65kg since turned 20. Just can't put on weight.

For the first 25 years of my life I was anorexic.
My mother used to cart me off to the Drs when I was young because she was concerned about how skinny I was. The Drs invariably prescribed some foul smelling and tasting tonic to increase my appetite. It never worked.
Thankfully I got married and Alice put me in a good paddock.
I think I can now claim that I have finally defeated anorexia.

Awesome effort to both of you,
I also suffer from not being able to get fat, so cant help with any super diet tricks but cycling is one of the keys to getting fit, but please get fitted for bikes....
Just getting a bike and pedaling away will do more damage. Get the right size bike for you, have it adjusted properly for your body size, just a small 5mm seat height adjustment stopped my knee pain in 24 hours that i had suffered for three months.

My life change moment came when i was hospitalised for two days from a suspected heart attack at age 39.
I had smoked for 24 years average 50 a day.
I walked out of hospital with a new lease on life, never touched another cigerett and took up cycling
After 9 months of training i rode solo from Mudgee NSW to Young NSW in three days. - via sofala.

It was definately one of the biggest highlights in my life.
Enjoy your new life, Set little goals and reward yourself for reaching them.
How did you think I earnt my ST1100.

In 1999 I was 117 kgs. and developed a breathing problem, Doc sent me to the heart specialist at PA. Sure enough, blocked artery. Doc gave the run down on how the treatment worked, then said he wouldn't do it unless I gave up cigarettes and lost weight. He reckoned he was wasting his small budget on people who didn't care so he was focusing his efforts on those who did. Valid argument.
So I lost 20 kgs and never had another smoke from that day to this.

Also, type 2 diabeties detected. (That kicked the daylights right out of me!)

2006 second stent fitted. Doc said I was a good tryer because he had expected to have to it 12 months after the first. Diabeties stable, weight stable.

2011. Home from Perth feeling a bit 2nd hand. Off to the Doc. Ergo, 10 days later I was in recovery from a quad bypass. Thankfully successful. They said I'd be in recovery for about 3 months. That was a bit out. It was 14 months, with ankle pains and fluid retention problems. And I'm back to 98 kgs.

All my research on health on the above, and I've done some, and how to live with it all taught me this.

Stay away from processed white sugar. Stay away from anything with a carbohydrate level in double digits. White flour bread is the worst. Go grain bread (carb level below 10.)

Spuds (potatoes) are out in any form. Use sweet potato. (you'll get used to it)

Tropical fruits are mostly out. Natural sugar levels are way too high. AND Mr Banana is off the menu. Everything wrong with 'em for any diabetic, and they lay on the fat. (that one really hurt)

Weetbix is a staple breakfast food for us types, (add some seeds & nuts AND get into Sinnamon - it is very good for diabetes control). UN-toasted muesli is OK. Toasted is out. Read the labels and you'll see why.

Don't stress on weight loss. Stress actually seems to acascerbate all the problems.

And the latest for the last. Sweeteners. If you're using a sweetener that has Aspartane in it - give it away now. The latest confirmed scientific tests shows that aspartane actually turns off the recepters in the brain that tells the body "I have eaten sufficient food. Stop consuming."

So if you've switched to Equals (with Aspartane) you're doing yourself no favours. Same with anything with Fructose.

Quick story - Aspartane is manufactured by Monsanto Inc. The U.S. FDA (Food & Drug Administration) wouldn't permit Aspatane to be used in food for human consumption.
George Bushes No 1 guy in the Gulf War was one Donald Rumsfeld. When he left the job he became the CEO of Monsanto. From Monsanto he became the head of the US Food & Drug Administration, and lo and behold six months later Aspartane was released for human consumption.

The medical fraternity in the US, and Aust. blame the move on the increase 80% fold in child obesity, and a dozen other associated problems, over the past few years.

So you are better to have the occasional straight Coke or Pepsi, even as a type 2 diabetic, than 3 or 4 Diet, Max, or Zero Cola's, because the Aspartane won't let your thirst be quenched, so you want more. etc and guess what? - you get fatter because you are consuming everything in levels above that which your body needs, or can cope with.

Me think it all bluddy 'mazing. (But it's true!)

So that's my input to the discussion. Hope didn't bore you and I hope some of you benefit from it.

Anybody wants to discuss it all some more or share more, please feel free to call me on 0418874771, or email me rex.wilkie@gmail.com (my profile details)

I gave up the smokes in June last year and substituted them for food - essentially a see food (and eat it) diet. I gained well over two stone in the old scale or around 12-14 kilos. It's taken me all this time to get off the merry-go-round of eating, then dieting and now just eat less, no confection (well, not much to be truthful) not too much of anything that looks like it'd increase my waist, and am now beginning to lose  the weight.
I went from 98 kilo's to 113, and now down to 108.something, and can now ride with less air in the tyres  :grin
I'd been smoking for the best part of 45 years, and it took a high BP count to make me see the error of my ways. BP's still a bit high but coming down as the weight comes off so that's got to be a good sign.
Streak and Teela, you should be extremely proud of yourselves for what you've both achieved so far, and I'm sure you'll reach your goal weight in no time  :thumbsup
Cheers,
Peter.

About 8 months ago I took my 4 kids to the local boxing gym twice a week.  It's a low budget (no profit) place run at the local showground and not connected to bikies.  I watched them as I have bulging discs and fused vertebraes in my neck and at that time exercise was out.
Three weeks ago I started training with them and its not easy at 53 yrs old but I do better than some of the others there.  Feel tired and a bit sore sometimes but also feel fitter and stronger.  I'm also learning a new skill.  After 2 hours of training (sit ups, push ups, running, bag work etc) feel pretty much wasted but sleep better and feel good the next day.  Gotta improve my stamina as the real boxers don't even tire.  Feel pretty good when I can do things that muscled up tattooed teenagers can't because they aren't fit enough or strong enough.
I reckon if you don't put it in you can't put it on but that's easy to say.  Rest and rust.
I've got the kids to go with, sometimes they come with me and there is my motivation.
I've heard it said before that the hardest part of going to a gym is leaving the front door.

My current goal is to be in the best shape ever by my next birthday in a few months....

I have been weight training at the gym for over 20 years which is something I enjoy.  Diet is my downfall.  I don't eat toooo badly but I don't really eat healthy either.

Recently I have been doing more cardio which I have found beneficial.  15-30 mins of cross trainer and bike at the end of a weights session.  I also try to get to the spinning class when I can (exercise bike class for those unfamiliar).

I tried CrossFit for a few months - the 'box' (gym to normal people) that I went to was a bit crap so I didn't really enjoy it.  It's expensive for what it is too.  Might try it again somewhere else.  Not the be-all and end-all that they seem to think it is though.

Outdoor training is good - e.g. at the esplanade when you can mix in running with the activity stations and some other exercises like burpees, lunges etc.

I have done a fair bit of running lately which I find to be the best way to lose fat, unfortunately my knees disagree and so I am not running at the moment.

To replace running I bought a half-decent mountain bike.  There are some good trails around here.  Good fun too.

Over the years I have found the best thing to do is find something you enjoy and do it regularly.  I see loads of people come and go from the gym.  I see so many people in there who go a couple of times a week and sit on the exercise bike on level 1.... waste of time.  Far better to find something enjoyable that gets the heart rate up for at least 30 mins per day.  Just my observations from my experience.

I feel positively unhealthy after reading your stories. My story is the oposite to most of you.........
Ive never had a weight problem, but years ago I got quite ill. In order to get my strength back I took up cycling. One thing led to another and I found myself addicted to triathlon. I trained hard, and was the healthiest ive ever been. I was never a champion, but always finished a race with my body and my dignity intact.
Throughout my triathlon period I always felt there was something missing in my life, and I ended up returning to my first love, music.
I gave up triathlon after a few too many near misses on the road, dug out my trumpet and started practicing again. I now play with my own band www.wellswungdaddies.com (http://www.wellswungdaddies.com) most weekends, smoke and drink, stay out too late at gigs and am as happy as a pig in poo.
At least trumpet playing is some sort of aerobic exercise.......thats what I tell myself anyway.....

My life changing moment was 5 years ago when I seemed to have put on 15 kilos almost overnight. I decided then that I would get back to my original weight of 70-75 kgs. So...for the last 5 years I've thought about getting fit, but still have to get around to doing it. BUT...it was life changing because I think about losing weight all the time. Specially right after breakfast, lunch and dinner. :p

Well this isn't about what I've done to get healthy, this is about what I have done to myself whilst I was getting healthy. I've got the next two weeks layed up on the lounge and off work because I have torn my hamstring.

So if you want a chat, counselling, or a drinking buddy, think of me, I will be here. Lol

From 96 to 79kg since April 23rd. Ate no processed food for 6 weeks, no alcohol, no dairy, no grains, no eggs, no nuts, (no high allergy foods)
I have only broken that occasionally in recent weeks. One recent RTE was shameful.   :EatCake  :fp  OK. So I had a breakout.  :whistle             The objective wasn't for weight loss but that happened as a side benefit.

A few years ago I challenged a colleague to a weight loss competition. Over 9 months I lost 29.7 kg and finished 2 kg below my target.

I won my bottle of plonk and to celebrate I had a "kitchen sink" burger at the lunch bar.

Now I've only got another 22 kg to go. :(

I'm a great believer in that old saying, "we are, what we eat"......so if you want to stay healthy, make sure that what you're eating is good for you, and you don't over eat!

Smoking is a definite no no :-(((...........I gave that away donkey's years ago, when I was young everyone smoked, but fortunately I wised up before it had an adverse effect. In the Ambulance Service I see so many younger people than myself with respiratory and cardiac problems caused from smoking. :crazy

Exercise is every bit as important as eating well...they go hand in hand! I became actively engaged in competitive water skiing from about 28 years of age and spent the next 12 years skiing every weekend of the year (I was a banana bender then), I followed that up with racing catamarans and windsurfing every weekend for many years, then I became interested in Martial Arts and have trained numerous times every week in karate for the past 24 years, I still practice and teach weekly, it's become a way of life for me. Also spent a few years riding and racing a race bike (cycle) in Brisbane 15 years ago, as well as running 4kls every morning before work. I still run 4kls occasionally on the beach here but not quite as often as I should.

I've been fairly active for a very large part of my life, for no other reason than I enjoy it, and it's had the added benefit of keeping me fit and healthy.

I'm very likely one of the oldest members in our club, if not the oldest, and I'm not saying exactly how old I am, but just for the record, I was born in 1940!! :grin

Move out of the smoggy smellie cities into the country where the air is clear and you drink rain water.
Ok for the first 2days it was Deli Belly and I wasn't even there.
Anyway that was July 14 and it  is now October 18. And have gone from 128kg to 112kg
My knees don't even hurt to much, hell I can even do some jogging .
The best part it is so damn peaceful
That is the bestest way of loosing weight that I know off.
Well that and only 1 meal a day which is a big breakfast .

In preparation for the OzSTOC IBA1600, I have been on the get healthy bandwagon (yes I got slack, as you all saw with the jacket fittings)

So I am doing a 4 day a week 1 hour boot camp sessions, with 2 games of 40 Minute mixed netball on a Monday and a Wednesday, and in 4 weeks I have achieved the below:

MEASUREMENTS 12/08/2014

Chest: 115cm
Stomach: 120cm
Waist: 110cm
Weight: 106.5kg

Measurements 25/08/2014

Chest: 112cm
Stomach: 114cm
Waist: 110cm
Weight: 103.9kg

Measurements 08/09/2014

Chest: 106cm
Stomach: 110cm
Waist: 106cm
Weight: 101.5

So 5kg and 2 shirt sizes and a pants size I am pretty happy, another 4 weeks to go yet!

First time I've seen something like that holding up your rear wheel.

Heather just bought her non geared pushie and doggie trailer and mine is on laybuy. I went for the 18 speed gears and suspension. We've both had 12 speeds (6 speeds if you follow the manual) before and it's not really that hard.

Recently diagnosed as type 2 diabetic, (5 weeks ago) and I am about 2 feet short of acceptable height/weight ratio, I have had to radically change my diet and eating habits. Have lost 7.2 Kilos in 5 weeks, Doc wants me down from 121 Kg to about 90 Kg by Christmas. I currently have an umbilical hernia, and have been waiting 5 years for a knee replacement, neither surgery will take place until the doctor approves my weight.
They suggest I exercise (With a wonky knee?)... best I can come up with is throwing my weight around, jumping to conclusions, and diving in feet first...... I would exercise more when I wake each morning, but my feet outvote me by two to one.....

Cycling is my exercise. Had to get back into it after winter each year but a 210 km ride around the 20th October each year is incentive. Not doing so well this year. 50 km ride yesterday and need to do more in the next week. Also need to give Ruby some time on the road before Sunday at Blackwood.  Due to health and travel issues have not been on powered two wheels since May.

While in the back yard working, I had a 16 to 20year old bloke kick in my front door. Found him searching through all the cupboards in the bedroom and tackled him.

About this stage I realised that I hadn't done any exercise for several months and after we both fell to the floor, he managed to slip from my grip and run out through the broken front door and into a waiting Holden ute getaway car.

I ran after the bloke but my legs and breath wern't with me and I had no chance of catching him or his mate.

The 000 operator kept asking if I needed an ambulance as I was breathing so hard.

SOOO it's off to the park AM tomorrow for a run and then back to the home gym, no more iced coffee's etc etc.

Must be tough to have dealt with that. I know I would be edgy if I had caught someone in the house. The closest I have got is some muppet breaking into the car outside one morning. I kicked them away and kept chasing the mangy bastard away. Apparently the coppers caught up with him, he fed the magistrate some bollocks and was let out again.

Guess that counts as exercise?

Courtesy of Medicare off to an exercise physiologist and a dietician .
3/12/14 96 kg lots of exercise and a constant check on ALL food to ensure less than 10% fat content. No soft drink , no beer, no chocolate. All about portion control 1/4 meat 1/4 carbs 1/2 vegies. It's not that hard even with a dodgy knee and shoulder.

A few weeks ago we managed to ride our new push bikes about half a km to the local park which I thought was a good first tryout after Heather's knee replacement and previous broken leg. So that was fine and maybe a few more little rides like that to strengthen her knee before we attempt anything longer.

During this first ride I had minor trouble getting some of the gears and while at the park I had a quick look. So it needs some adjustment to get it right and the LH pedal wasn't tight and almost fell off so we had to walk back home..........the bikes haven't left the shed since.

Slowly getting my weight down, I have dropped from 123 kilos in August 2014, to 102 Kilos today. My target is 90, Hopefully.

Have achieved this by only eating one moderate meal per day, (meat and veges) and some small snacks of Crackers and cheese. Maybe ten crackers or so per day.
I also have small portions of home made yoghurt, about a kilo per week. I am a heavy milk drinker, at 3 litres per day.
Occasionally I have an egg on toast, maybe once or twice per week. Also enjoy fresh fruit, ... a banana, or a kiwi fruit, peaches, plums and apricots when in season.

Doc wants me down to 90 kilos before surgery for some minor problems I have.

You may need to reduce the milk intake Kev, difficult I know but it is a bit high in fat content.

Well done getting to 102 Kg, I'm at a constant 105

Not the fat content you have to worry about, but the sugars.  I've lost 5kg in the last 4 weeks on a low carb high fat diet.  Feeling the best I have in years.  No cravings for sweet foods and I have lots of energy.  I even got over my change of season, cold induced chest infection much quicker than usual.

I havent got scales with me but I believe that the camping, setting up, walking and travelling we are doing at present is helping me to lose weight. I will have to weight a while to find out.

I parked the bike outside a Gym today, was there for about 20 minutes?

Activities seen through the window failed to motivate me, so I returned home.

I went to the Doc's just before Christmas, had the glucose blood test (I don't know the proper term for it), which came in 3 points below being classed as type 2 diabetic.

Doc says change diet and exercise. Diet is difficult after a lifetime of sweets but I think I'm improving, although I reckon it'll be about 5 years before I'll be allowed near sweets again, lol.

As for exercise, I tried walking but found that quite boring and susceptible to the weather so I've taken to walking (and sometimes running) in the local pool. Running in water does terrible things to leg muscles, believe me.

Christmas is never the best time to diet, but have managed to ditch 2 kilos over the last 3 weeks with hopefully more to follow.

Time will tell.

Two kilos in 3 weeks is fantastic!
Do you need sugar-free gum to placate your lolly craving?

Bill, I've taken up the drink (water), and fruit. Not that I didnt have fruit before, but I have a bit more now - not too much, you understand. But I'm not a saint by any means either. I still break out occasionally and get a few jelly babies into me, but odd as it may sound, they've lost their appeal, as my tastes have changed

Great work Pete.  There's good research coming out re low carb diets and intermittent fasting and reversing insulin resistance, pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.  I've cut all starchy and sugary carbs from my diet and am feeling great.

I am down to 93 kilos now, but I think I may have lost some weight over the last few days because I have not eaten since Friday with the stress of losing a very good friend.
There's always tomorrow to have a meal....  if I feel the need for it.... maybe.....

Don't go too long, or your own organs will start to fail.

I have stopped smoking. 37 years ago and stay away from smokers as much as possible. Have not found anything as beneficial for my health yet apart from slowing down a bit on the road.
