legal trailer width when towing??
« on: November 26, 2015, 09:45:24 PM »
I am based in Queensland .

Is there a rule stating the maximum width you can tow behind a bike?

I had a look at the TMR website but could not find anything conclusive.

Cheers,

Spanner

Briefly in SA they mention an overall length (towing vehicle plus trailer) of 19 metres and a maximum width of 2.2 metres for a light trailer. Other than that weight limits would come into play. For an unbraked (plus over ride brakes) trailer the laden mass of the trailer cannot exceed the unloaded weight of the towing vehicle. For the 1100 that would be about 290 kg and for the 1100A 300 kg. Electric brakes etc then 1.5 times the vehicle weight applies for the trailer.

I have emailed a information request to Qld Transport and Main Roads but will need to wait for upto 15 days.

Kept the question simple so it might be a quicker answer.

Will keep you all updated as and when the reply comes.

national building standards for trailers are laid out in VSB1
google it to get the full copy

as far as i can tell they dont care what you tow it with
so long as it falls into an individual category and meets the requirements documented by the standard

the camper i built was 1.2m wide (the size of the tent top)
it was ok to tow behind the ST but you probably wouldnt want to go much wider due to drag etc

just how wide are you looking at
Cheers

I notice national the width of 2.5 meters compared to SAs 2.2 metres; not that I'd want to tow anything that wide with my bike.
