Non- OEM REAR ABS brake pads query
« on: February 04, 2014, 07:42:54 PM »
Evenin' all...

Well...bugger actually :well...but as far as I can tell, the last aftermarket brake pad distributor in Oz that bothered getting in the correct rear pads for the late variant ABS 1100's...GOLDfren, have ceased bringing em into OZ :cuss

The usual suspects like SBS, EBC et al haven't brought em in for decades.

So...if anyone has manage (or actually bothered), to manage to get a set of these +.8mm thick correctly fitting Non-OEM pads for a late model  ABS1100...within the last 4-6/12....I'd luv to know where ya got em :thumb

Cheers the can :-)

Postage is a killer in this instance & usually is the case more often than not.
Having said that i paid $50 postage on my Cee Bailey screen last month via Ebay ....

Evenin' Brock...

Hi Mate...yeah they do, but they only offer organic pads...super soft and the CBS 1100's have an voracious appetite for pads...these won't last long...good for bedding in new discs only :-[

It's a pain in the bum really as these pads are the same as for the GL1800's...so it's not as if these out of production ST's are on their own.

Look, like the Goldy owners I am happy to go OEM for em...just wondered if anyone else had got any after market pads lately, that's all :wink1

Cheers Dick :-)

Close Brock, but no cigar unfortunatly :-[

...the 1300's brakes are somewhat different to the 1100's, even the ABS models...the 1300's are updated and use different thickness pads that are matched to their later breaking system...the confusing thing is that physically, all of these pads will fit 1300's / 1100's, providing there the 3 pot caliper, rear or front.!

The ABS/CBS 1300's manage with a 8.3mm (give or take a few microns), pad on the rear...whereas the ABS/CBS1100's require a 9.3mm (ditto) pad....yet the wear rate for each is pretty much the same due to the later (? better), ABS/CBS used on the 1300's. And maybe the added weight of the 1100 is a factor (dunno).

Cheers Dick :-)

I've been using sintered metal pads from Metalgear in the front and back of Goldie ('99 ST1100 ABS/TCS/CBS) for a while and they work fine, the bike stops very well. I don't use the rear brake heavily any where near as much as the fronts so the wear is pretty low. (Hmmm.. just checked the Metalgear site and they are out of stock of the sintered metal pads).

You could always try to locate some Vesrah VD165JL pads (these are sintered metal pads to suit the rear of the ST1100A models). I know Supercheap was selling Vesrah brake pads here and they had these hanging on the wall.

I still use OEM pads on mine. From memory the bikes original pads were changed out at about 70,000km for an aftermarket set as that was what the dealer had in stock at the time. They worked ok but to noisy compared to the originals.

Then I found David Silver Spares and bought an OEM set of pads, an air/oil filters and plugs and saved heaps compared to local prices. The newer OEM pads went in at about 90,000 km and are now due to be replaced on the next tyre change. That still works out to be about 70,000km a set.

Evenin' Chaps,

Ta for the thoughts :-)

For some reason Metalgear no longer do the sintered pads, as they advised me last week.

Anyway, l think l have sourced a set of GOLDfren. I think as time goes by, 1100 parts procurement will, in all likelihood become challenging. Reckon next year we will the first of em on classic reg here in Vic :-)

Ciao, the can :-)

OK As a part act of desperation  I decided to purchase a set of Organic pads from Metal Gear...They are absolute RUBBISH :cuss...but they will have to do until I get the correct ones

...The anchor pin hole is undersize and they is no cut out to accommodate the anti-rattle plate the secure point :well

...They will fit...but only after some fettling... >:()

...I'll leave em in for now, but will replace them, soon

Ciao, the can :-)

At least you had the skills to make it fit, those that dont would have been stuck without a bike until a fix was sorted...

I just bought Goldfren Ceramic/Carbon HH Sintered pads for $100.07 delivered instead of the usual OEM pads I buy. These are for the 1996 -2002 ABS models.

These arrived in today's mail and they do appear to be ok. Our member keith3po in the UK uses these on his 1100 and now his 1500 Goldwing and has no issues with them so they can't be as bad as the cheap basic organic pad.

Evenin' Alan et al...

I'd forgotten about this thread...so an update.

I am presently using the Metalgear organic on the rear and surprisingly they are performing rather well. ALSO, on Brock's suggestion, I did contact Metalgear re my fettling to get the pads to fit...and a couple of months ago I received a complimentry set of ceramic / carbon correct thickness rear pads for the ABS ST1100. ;-*

So a big Hooray for METALGEAR :hatwave

Cheers the can:-)
