Title: Wild Rose has had an "Off"
Post by: StinkyPete on May 06, 2018, 07:25:30 PM
I've just had a phone conversation with Wild Rose.  Today he had a slow speed "off" at Angaston SA, and unfortunately he's broken his shoulder.   He's currently in hospital and is being assessed, and certainly won't be riding for some time.   I'll be keeping in touch, and will assist with transporting Leo as required, and storage of his bike, which is currently in the care of motel where's he's staying.

Thanks to everyone for your best wishes for Leo, which I'll pass on when I speak to him today, as I'm not sure if he has interweb access.  Leo said the bike's  still rideable, but with some new scratches.   One mirror popped off, but that's back on now.

I've just spoken to Leo again after he's been assessed by the specialists.   He's going to be in hospital for a few days.   Langers, Richo and I are organizing to collect Leo's bike and bring it back to my place, and we'll visit Leo in hospital while we're in the region.   I'll have a chat with him then, to figure out how he wants to get it back home, and perhaps chase some quotes to have it shipped door to door.

I just had a call from Leo.   His shoulder was a bit of a mess, but the surgery went well and doctors are confident of a good recovery.   I'll be seeing him tomorrow, and with Langers assistance will  bringing his bike back to my place.  Leo flies home on Friday so I'll collect him from hospital and get him to the airport.   Bugger of an end to a much anticipated trip south for the Ulysses AGM.

Langers and I have just been out to the hospital to see Leo.   He's in good spirits and seems to be recovering well from surgery, with the physio there with him when we arrived.  Check out the x-ray of Leo's new collection of hardware.   The staff at the Calvary Central Districts Hospital seemed really nice and while we were chatting the Shift Team Leader called in and was asking about his arrangement for getting both himself and his bike back home, which seemed above and beyond normal medical care.   After leaving Leo, we drove to the Angaston Vineyards Motel, the scene of the crime, where Leo dropped the bike in their gravelly driveway.   The manager Jeff has looked after Leo very well and took him to the hospital after his mishap, and has also stored his bike in his own shed.  Damage to the bike is limited to a broken right side mirror and mirror housing, and some scratches to the paintwork on the right pannier lid.   Shannons are looking after the insurance issues, and will be arranging for the bike to be shipped back to Toowoomba Honda for repairs.  Thanks to those who volunteered to help get his bike back home, but with Shannons on Leo's team, your help is not needed.    In the meantime I've ridden it from Angaston and she's now locked away in my shed.  Leo is booked to fly home on Friday, and I'll be making sure he get's safely out of SA.

Hang in there Leo, and know that you have a lot of people on your team looking out for you when you in crisis and are so far from home.

Well done Pete and Langers  , thanks for the update and on the Shannons report. I can stop looking for flight bookings as I was prepared to fly down to enjoy an easy ride to Toowoomba then fly home again. Leo certainly has a lot of hardware in his shoulder I  counted 11 screws. Wow.  the OzSTOC  family is an asset we members are proud  of.

My appointment with physio was encouraging today
Everything seems to be doing what it is surpost to be doing
Rest for another 4 weeks with a little excercise let everything heel. Then increase the work load
Definitely no bike riding for at least 3 months maybe more
No car driving for another 4 weeks plus

Wow an impressive way of dodging have coffee with me at the AGM.
Glad to hear you are on the mend.
Apparently you were not the only casualty of travelling to the AGM.
After losing control of his bike while pulling a trailer to the AGM a rider and his pillion also ended up in a hospital in Adelaide.

Wow!  Three plus months.  I know you'll be feeling much more like getting on the bike a long time before the compulsory time is up.  Once the bruising subsides and the pain fades you'll be champing at the bit (to borrow a horsey phrase).  The roses will never have been so well-tended.

Will the insurance assessment take place in Toowoomba, or has it been done already?

As far as I know Toowoomba but I never thought of that
But because there is not a lot of damage I thought it would be fixed in Toowoomba
I'm with Shannon Insurance and they have been great so far
My mate that was hit by the roo is with QBE and talks to people oversea's and is not happy with them
As soon as his bike is fixed he is swapping to Shannon's

My mate that was hit by the roo is with QBE and talks to people oversea's and is not happy with them

I'm with RAA.  Personally I have had no problems with them but when I hit a roo it took two months to fix.  The bike shop blamed the insurance but how much of that is true I don't know.  That bike shop's demise is how I found this forum.

As far as I know Toowoomba but I never thought of that
But because there is not a lot of damage I thought it would be fixed in Toowoomba
I'm with Shannon Insurance and they have been great so far

As soon as his bike is fixed he is swapping to Shannon's

I'm with Youi and they were great when I had a minor scrape.  Didn't affect my premiums either.

Leo's bike has left my place for it's journey home, in far different circumstances to it's arrival in SA, and not in the way that Leo would have chosen.
I've attached a photo of the minimal damage, and just before she was loaded by the carrier.

Leo, I've sent you a PM.  :thumb

Fortunately when I tried that stunt you could still buy replacement parts.

Had the best sleep last night since the off :hatwave
I have been only getting 2-3 hrs before my arm starts hurting and wakes me up
get up walk around the house take some panadol then back to bed and try to get another few hours
Last night I slept with my arm out of the sling on my back with my arm beside my side
I use Cpap  machine so no snoring to keep household awake
So I got 6hrs so a big improvment
Maybe the big walk yesterday home from the doctor yesterday helped  :thumbsup
Or the few beers I had last night at a mates send off from work  :grin

....... The dirty laundry can always be binned

In 2011, on the ride home from the Ulysses AGM at Newcastle, I had a little detour via the Bega District Hospital and then National Private Hospital in Canberra.  The Mighty CB1300 and most of my luggage was stranded, sitting lonely a shed at the rear of the Grand Hotel in Bega.

RACV Extra Cover took care of the CB - it was either a long or slow trip home, as it took three weeks.  I was home and up and about by then, so supervised it being safely parked in the garage.  I still was not fit enough for any tinkering with the bike, and there wasn't much thought to unpacking my gear.  That would have to wait for a couple of more weeks.

When I did get to unpack everything, I remembered that the tent had been packed-up in the wet.  I was expecting it to be mouldy as I unrolled it, but no it was fine.  There must be something said for the synthetic materials some tents are made of these days.

Some jocks and socks that were rolled up next to the tent didn't fare so well.  The wheelie bin next to the garage door came in handy.

With my bike being back in Toowoomba I got a chance to get my helmet
which copped a fair wack on the concrete garden edge when I fell off
A Shoei Neotec saved my head and the reason I'm probably still here to talk about it
Shannon Insurance  have approved my claim and money being put in my Bank
As the Neotec has been superseded by the Neotec 2 I will get the new one
I had to cut the straps off and include in the photo with helmet

I'm sure it has paid for itself. And I'm so lucky my insurance is paying for a new one. I'm just so lucky I decided to put my helmet back on before moving my bike.  Someone was looking over me

He said all healing well I won't need another operation but just going to be slow recovery I go to physiotherapy tomorrow to work on strength and mobility
He has extended my sick leave to the end of September and no driving for a while yet. I will leave my options open for National rally at Mackay till it gets a bit closer

It's possibly because I've mucked out in dairies and pigstys, nappies are small fry.

I've lost count of the number I've changed in the last 2 years.

Update :-

I went back to the Surgeon on Monday and he gave me another 4 weeks off
The arm just taking its time to come good, getting old he said  :fp
I try to exercise 3 times a day which takes about 1/2 hr the do Hydro pool once a week
The Physio is happy with the improvement and each week I find new things I can do
The Surgeon said no riding yet, but still waiting on Toowoomba Motorcycles to repair my bike
When it arrived there I told them no rush as I won't be riding for a while
But a month ago I give them a rev up and said I want my bike home so they put a claim into Shannon Insurance
Who approved the repair plus added a few extra's from the photo's that were sent to them
So parts have been ordered and they say about mid October before I get it back
So I don't know if I will make the RTE to Kenilworth Hotel on the 17th November  :hatwave
It has been a slow progress but not riding till I know it is strong enough to hold the weight of my ST

Good to hear, Rosie.
Having said that, the STs are mean gals to hold up when they get a lean going.  I think you're going to have to avoid every situation where you have to "hold her up"- or just let it drop and get help lifting back up.

Good to hear about your on-going improvement.   Each tiny improvement is a step towards a good recovery.   Strength, determination and endurance will pay off in the long term.

I imagine that you are looking forward to having the bike back in your shed and in good shape.  You can then tinker with it, and sit on it making Brooom, Brooom noises until you are ready to ride again.

Update
I got a phone call from Toowoomba Motorcycles yesterday telling me that all the parts are in and they will be starting on my bike next week  :hatwave
Injury update
I had a hernia operation n Monday which has slowed me up a bit, it happened about 1 weeks before I went to Adelaide but wasn't that painful so I still went down
Talking to the shoulder/arm surgeon last time he said I may as well get it fixed so I did
4 to 6 weeks recovery  :fp
About the recovery of the arm it will be 6 months post surgery next Thursday even though physio is coming along slowly I am still a long way of being being fully recovered I have most of my strength back in my arm but I still struggle raising my arm up and down getting thing from on top on cupboards and high shelves is a problem and exercises from the physio don't seem to be helping
So in the next few weeks he has a get together with other Surgeons he is going to discuss my case and maybe operate again and remove the plate and screws and have a look around on the shoulder end of the Humerus there is a lump on the end that they may have to be smoothed off
Just got to wait and see
Hopefully if no operation I may get a ride in before Christmas  :grin

Please explain
I have to be able to reach up to climb up the ladder on to the locomotive and at this stage my arm above shoulder height is not very strong and stable.
With help from the physio we are working on it. It is a slow progress
But now the hernia opp has set the arm back a bit as I have to careful not to strain it

Pete rehab coming along slowly I'm back swimming in the pool 3 times a week which is good
Not all swimming a bit of walking and climbing up and down the ladder to help with strengthening arm to climb up on locomotive at work. It is sore after each workout but they say "No pain no gain" then I got a 20 workout I do at home 2-3 times a day

I will also have to do a assessment before returning to work

I got another ride in yesterday
The Wild Rose rides again short ride  :hatwave
6 mates and I did short coffee run to Pittsworth yesterday for brunch
Even though I had been catching up with my mates for coffee runs in my car it was great to finally do it on my bike again
We only rode about 90km for the day, arm got a bit sore again but like Biggles said I will have to get arm ride fit again
Looking forward to our next coffee ride before I attempt a longer run or overnighter or OzSTOC RTE

On Monday the 4th February my employer is sending me to be assessed for a return to work
So don't know what I will have to all do
I guess climbing up and down ladders to see if I can get up on loco then arm strength checks to see if I do the shunting required by my job
The Surgeon looking after me said it could take up too 2 years or never fully recover
It will be nearly 9 months since the fall and lot recovery exercises to get me this far
Not looking forward to shift work again but that goes with thejob

It's important to get back to work to feel you've beaten the prang and to regain employment satisfaction if train driving is something you love doing.
Have you simulated climbing up onto the engine e.g by climbing a fairly steep ladder? (Please don't fall off while trying!!)

I go swimming/walking in the local pool 3 times a week while there I climb up & down the ladder a dozen times as it is good for recovery

I failed my medical for my return to work
If it was just my arm I would have got clearance but I have a crook right knee which I have had for 20 years plus, so a combination of the two makes me a bit unstable at times
So back to the surgeon for another 3 months off and a trip to the physio to work on my problems
That will take me up to 12 months since the off in May last year  :fp
If the physio doesn't work I may have to get a replacement knee
I don't know if it all worth it I might just have to retire and live off my hard working wife
No one tell Robyn I said that
Well she will have to keep me in the lifestyle I'm used too  :like

That's no good.  Does your employment have a thing called 'light duties'?  I know mine does, but having never been in that situation not sure exactly what it entails, other than those who have been off on work cover come back and do small tasks around the depot or sit at interchanges and record what time buses arrive and depart.  That said, I don't think the company does anything with collected data but bin it.

Bodo
Unfortunately no light duties. I asked that when I had the off
It's either I can do the job or not
So after 43 years they just throw you in the scrap heap   :OldMan

Well my Employer has Terminated my Employment
So I have to rely on my Super to keep us going
I am going to put in a claim against the Motel where I had my off
So no more nights out of bed except when I can't sleep
Which is most nights, but I must get enough

I'm so sorry to hear that that's the way it's turned out.   Who could have possibly imagined that a relatively simple tip over, that we've all done, would cause a severe injury, which has ultimately resuled in termination of your employemnt.  Know that you have our support as you negotiate your future.

I agree David, I felt like I had been shot down in flames when forced to retire injured myself, but was managing ok until I had my accident 2 years ago. Now, I have bouts of depression at the lack of mobility, and being stuck at home waiting for my pension check to arrive each fortnight, so I spend my time at the keyboard trying to find jokes to pass on that wont get me sent to the naughty corner.  :grin
I think I manage ok ... :thumb

I'm very very sorry to hear about the job mate. After working there so many years it would be absolutely devastating :'(

Try to focus on whatever good things you can and remember you have a lot of friends here that you can talk to any time

Hopefully things will go well with the claim against the Motel and you'll be able to regain some financial stability.

So it is either super or donations  :H

Goodonya Leo.   There is something quite fulfilling about volunteering, particularly helping those who are struggling.   My own work as a volunteer spiritual carer at a major hospital has been suspended during the pandemic, and I really miss not hearing the stories of the patients and staff, and supporting them during a tough time.   I am sure you will get as much as you give.   :thumbsup
