Whew- you'd need for your company to be paying for it!  Yes, it's an alternative, but not for the casual user- definitely someone whose job or lifestyle depended on the comms, such as a tour operator.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Don't frett...now that Garmins takeover of DeLorme is starting to bare fruit, soon your GPS will do it all...https://www.garmin.com/en-US/blog/featured-2/garmin-announces-first-devices-satellite-communication-technology-introducing-inreach-se-inreach-explorer/
One day you will wake up and there won't be anymore time to do the things you've always wanted so do them NOW!!!
Remember there are 7 days in a week and Someday isn't one of them!

The hot spot is a once off 799, then 25 connection and a Month by month 15. One you owned one it would be good. A couple of people could share one on a trip.

Tend to agree with Biggles,   this is the base plan.  It would be worthwhile comparing this with the Spot.  Both items are a very good piece of kit if you can afford or want to pay the fees.  I have used Spot and have been using Bubbler Pro for a number of years and it is very suitable for the riding that I do.

I rarely need my phone once out range of civilisation so I don't see a need for this.
