Coolant on low mark
« on: November 08, 2014, 08:48:03 AM »
I checked Ruby's coolant level and as it was at the bottom mark I thought I should top it up. After a few attempts to see what existing coolant was I invented a syringe to take a sample. Its green so does that help me work out what I need to top it up or do I need to change it. Any ideas???

Gary first thought would be if it was dealer serviced, nip down to Peter Stevens in Ringwood and grab the genuine fluid. I think its available premixed. Which makes it easier. If not I would look at flush and replace, just to be safe and check for any leaks.  Nigel

Not sure about the dealer service. Also remember hearing the genuine Honda was blue. Not sure though.

Ps Nigel. Honda dealer in Ringwood I think is A1. Its where PStevens used to be and P Stevens is near Oban road on the higheay and not a Honda dealer. Everything else is sold there.

You could top it off with distilled water, it would only take a few mils, and is quicker easier and cheaper than doing a complete flush. After all, if your system is still sealed then the loss will be due to evaporating water.

A bit of stern advice - if there is any doubt about the history of the coolant then change it. The manual calls for change at 24 month intervals. I can't comment on the properties of "Long life" coolants (e.g. 3 year life) but I have always stuck to the 24 mth interval to be on the safe side.  Old coolant does not prevent corrosion and any small quantity not flushed out will degrade the new coolant so thorough flushing (preferably with rainwater) is very important. A corroded engine block in an ST1100 would mean a write -off.
