I put this on just prior to doing an FarRide (1642km) through dry and wet conditions and several roadworks, and it's worked a treat.
But, is it needed, costs all of less then $2.
Yes, is my answer, as it stops all those little pieces of blue metal etc from the road, which are a pain to clean off.
(As a side note, I use old tooth brushes with double sided tape on my metal bandsaw wheels for a similar reason.)

Buy a synthetic painting brush, remove handle, squash metal ferrel in vice/piers, bend a 90 degree on the handle end, cable tie, your done, so have a beer and write it on your farkle list.

Very clever...

Does a bit of dust on them really compromise their effectiveness?
Dunno- just askin'.

Well that now explains why Pockey and I couldn't find our tooth brushes after we got home from a recent visit :OldMan
Good job 99 :like

It's not dust that it's the issue, but it's small blue metal particles (road surface) that become attached to the magnets.
Yes, I was bored and I wanted to farkle the bike :rofl
I'm re-posting this so I can find it for STraya :grin

When I fitted the McCruise to my 1300, I decided I did not want to use the magnets at all because of possible malfunctions resulting from tyre changes and just general knocks etc, so I tapped into the speed pulse sensor and it works very well . . . The guys from McCruise were very helpfull supplying alternative cabling and advice on some adjustments to the connections to the control unit . .

Terry,
Where did you tap into the speed sensor on your bike?
Was it you who also fitted an electronic actuator in place of the vacuum one?
-
I tapped into the bikes speed sensor circuit on the right hand side of the bike, had to remove right fairing.
Have a look at a wiring diagram and or workshop manual, I used the same tap in point for the Speedo Healer (corrects speedo to read accurately, downside is tripmeter under-reads . . Not a huge problem as I tend to use the Garmin GPS readings. Pink and green wires.
There is no need to cut any wires as tap in point is at a connecting plug point. McCruise will supply items required to change from rear magnet pickup to speed sensor circuit . . At a about $30 . . The also tell you what mods might need to be made at the computer connections.
I installed a McCruise vacuum unit, Alf aka Curious1, has installed a Rostra system which uses an electric servo.

Alternative pickup point for the VSS is on the LHS of the bike on the big connector under the LHS fairing pocket. The Pink/Green wire is the one.

I thought you may have used the DLC that my GIpro gear indicator plugs into.

I have a GIpro and thought about using that tie in point but played it safe and went with the connecting plug near the speed sensor instead . . I wasn't sure if the pulses would be the same . .
