In a ratio of age groups I would disagree with the findings of this study

The article contradicts itself quote" the study found that the older the rider, the lower the odds they were in a crash."
And of course the longer they will be in hospital - Brilliant!

I think he might be saying that older sport bike riders tend to have more crashes as opposed to older riders of other bikes (like STs and Goldwings etc.) types.

Blaming 'older' bike riders, no matter what type of bike they ride, is another media bike haters into tricking the non-bike riding public into believing motorbike's are dangerous ! :cuss
It's all done with rubbery figures I tell you ! :butt
Same sort of figures that politicians use when they promise to do something. IE - ALL B.S. :OldMan
The MAIN cause is ignorant cage drivers who 'didn't see' the motorbike before they hit it !
How do you educate MORONS who send their driving time half asleep behind the wheel or on their mobile phones ??? :think1
Just my two cents worth. :CB--

Now Im worried that I might crash :cuss :OldMan :fp :crazy

Interesting, so what bike will I crash on? The ST or the VFR? If we can get past everybody looking out for other vehicles all bee it anything, and everything. and bring back the courtesy that we enjoyed some 15 years ago, we might be in with in half a chance. Its all it takes. I watch so many in so much of a hurry to get no where. Sort of racing to the next lights sts. 2c :wht11

Totgas and Alan have nailed it, so let's not get our knickers in a knot. Here's some quotes from the report, with my highlights....
Sportsbike riders, in particular older riders, have greater odds of being involved in serious injury crashes than riders of other types of bike
and
Apart from older sportsbike riders, the study found that the older the rider, the lower the odds they were in a crash. However older riders who crashed had significantly longer stays in hospital
It should come as no surprise that older riders, perhaps with slower reactions, and riding sports bikes, are at an increased risk, particularly since age does not always equate to experience and skill. Similarly we older riders who ride tourers and not sports bikes as alluded to in the second quote, have lower odds of being in a crash. The finding that older riders who land in hospital stay there for longer should be expected, since we would take longer to recover and heal than an 18 year old. Overall, I am encouraged by the report, and it supports my belief that older riders on touring bikes are not accidents waiting to happen, but are probably some of the safest road riders around. We don't ride, fueled with adrenaline and a need to scorch past the bike or car in front, but inspired with a desire to come home safe, having seen and experienced what this great country has to offer. Bloody car drivers need to "skill up" and increase their overall level of surveillance, and we need to ensure we ride within our own skill level, and with a continuing high level of surveillance and care. I'll get off my soapbox now. :grin

YER what StinkyPete said

So make it a New Year's resolution to do another Rider Training Course this year, even if it costs the equivalent of 10 tanks of fuel.
It might ensure you get to burn at least that much down the track.

Another thing not mentioned, is whether the rider is recently returning to riding, new to riding or has been riding for some years.

Very definitely a factor. Too many guys remember how natural it was to throw a leg over their Honda 250 so go buy a Valkyrie 40 years later and surprise themselves that it has more power than they remember.
