Hello folks. I'm after a new helmet. Looks not overly important, though noise reduction is. What do you guys use and recommend?

I have a Nolan flip face. Comfortable with good air flow but like most flip face helmets it is noisy so I ride with ear plugs.

Wind noise is influenced by your head shape, helmet shape, height, bike design, screen height and design, wind strength and direction etc etc. What works for one person on their bike may not work for you. Simply try lots on and find the helmet that is the most comfortable and snuggest fit on your head, as the correct helmet for you is one that fits well and is comfortable. With the helmet on your head and straps done up, if you grasp the helmet and try to spin it sideways on your head, it should pull your face skin around with it. Grab the back of the hemet (straps done up) and try to pull it forward and off your head. It should not be able to come off, and if it does, it may come off in a crash, which is bad. Full face helmets with minimal vents seems to be the quietest, and flip front helmets, while popular, have a reputation for being a bit noisier. In a crash, a light helmet may be preferable to a heavy helmet, as less mass is swinging around on your neck. When touring, always wear hearing protection, as many of us are now paying the price for poor hearing protection from past years.
My previous helmet was a very expensive Shoei X-Eleven and it was the noisiest helmet I've ever owned, to a point where I gaffer taped up all the vents to try to quiet it down. I now ride with a Shoei TZ-R which has the reputation of being a quiet helmet. Wind noise is no longer a problem for me with the Shoei TZ-R, aftermarket screen and hearing protection.
If reduced wind noise is one of your main objectives, fit a Bike-Quip screen, and you find lots of post describing how effective they are.

I agree, lots of things change noise levels. I had a shoei tzr that is reviewed as being quiet, but I found it to be one of the noisiest helmets I have owned. :OldMan
I just bought a shoei gt-air (shoei's seem to fit my head). With the chin curtain in it is reasonably quiet but I normally ride without it (easier to get on/off).
A set of earplugs (earmolds are comfy) are the best way to reduce wind noise.
Get a helmet which fits your head, earplugs can sort the noise level.

Quite a lot of helmet noise is generated around the neck area, this makes it very difficult to eliminate.

Fit/noise/features are hard. The guys are right, the noise in a particular helmet is dependent on the shape of the helment and the shape of the noggin and and also if you like to ride head in the wind or not. When touring I wear a Shoei Neotec with ear plugs. It's not the quietest of the four helmets I use regularly but the convenience of the flip face, the venting, the UV protection from the visor, the ability to change the sizes of the liner for better fit (and reduced noise for my scone), the slip down sun shield for early mornings and late afternoons gives you a lot of flexibility on the road. I've done rides where I've only taken it off once in 20 hours and not changed from my clear night glasses to sunnies.
Thinking about screens is probably a better call for noise reduction, then earplugs. Helmets are a suck it and see affair and you may never find one you are happy with on the noise front... or you might.

I used the Neotec as well for the sane reasons as Wombattle. with the tinted visor, my photo chromatic (self tinting) glasses didn't tint. That means the UV protection for the face was brilliant. I also left the chin air dam in all the time, because that made a big difference to wind noise. I also used "Ear Mould" ear plugs,m especially on longer trips.
The other thing I loved about the Neotec is that I wear glasses, and I could easily put it on without disturbing my glasses.
The ventilation in the Neotec is awesome. The vent on the top was so good that I could only open it at temps above 22 °C, bedside my thinly populated noggin would get painfully cold. Above 22,it speed my head and neck from getting sweaty.
The Nolan flip face I had before that was very noisy!
The Shoei XR1? full face I had before the Nolan was just as quiet as the Neotec. I'm putting that down to the improvements in design in the neotec. The combination of the more snug fit around the back and sides on the neck, the chin air dam, changes to the foam and air venting. Even the little lip just before the join in the flip to reflect air away from the join.

I also use the Shoei Neotec helmet which I got in a medium, it was a bit tight for the first 6 months on long rides
but I find it excellent now after breaking it in
I have a California Scientific screen http://www.calsci.com/ (http://www.calsci.com/) and I don't need to wear ear plugs because of design of the screen
I have "ear mould" ear plugs but I find them a bit tight and uncomfortable on long rides

other things we add to helmets, e.g. Bluetooth also contribute to wind noise.

I got a shoei GT air seems to work well for me quite but not perfect but more then acceptable at the moment

It's all about head shape. The pillion in a million and I both had Nolan flip helmets. She could only wear hers for a couple of hours and would get a severe headache. Moved on to a Shoei and would never swap it. Secret was tried on helmets til one felt comfortable and then wandered around the shop for half an hour to make sure it kept feeling comfortable. Next time I changed I went to a Shark Evo 2 flip and that ended up being replaced under warranty for an Evo 3. Just love the fit, can wear it all day and barely know I have it on. The drop down sun visor is brilliant too.
Guess the other point is that hopefully it won't be too long before all States accept the Euro standard for helmets and we will have greater choice smaller, lighter better helmets. I am hanging out till then for my next buy.

Schubert was on my list to try when they start being imported. The Revzilla reviews always that they are the premium helmet for lightness and quietness.

I'll let you know after Christmas.
I imported one from Italy, but it's under the Christmas tree. :grin
I did try to pull it on and dragged my ears onto my neck.
The visor has to be up to get it on, it's so snug around the neck- augurs well for quietness, but less ventilation than my Shoei.

Will you have to go back to using the Shoei when traveling interstate Biggles?

That's a much-vexed question in the riding fraternity. I detect a move to deregulate, or at least a move away from policing.
Has anyone had first or second-hand experience with that issue?

Not sure if anyone has read this from Feb this year, http://www.standards.org.au/OurOrganisation/News/Documents/Motorcycle%20Helmets%20Forum%2019%20Feb%202015%20-%20Forum%20Notes.pdf (http://www.standards.org.au/OurOrganisation/News/Documents/Motorcycle%20Helmets%20Forum%2019%20Feb%202015%20-%20Forum%20Notes.pdf), but it looks like there is some agreement for the ECE standard to be allowed in addition to the AS1698. Of course bureaucrats are involved so it will progress at a snails pace.

The Commonwealth has repealed consumer legislation regarding AS for motorcycle helmets and soon ECE helmets will be turning up on shelves.....HOWEVER...each State has to invoke it's own rules to match. Currently Qld, Vic & NT already come under this as they only have an 'approved helmet' & other states are close to invoking. NSW Govt made ECE helmets legal last week. MCA put this out on 12 Dec.
"Good news! We just received news that NSW Road Rules have been amended to allow for ECE.22 complied helmets to be used in NSW from today. Thanks goes to NSW Govt for moving on this so quickly. MERRY XMAS!!!
The Minister for Roads and Ports, Duncan Gay has come good on his promise made in October at MAW when he publicly stated that as soon as the ACCC amended or revoked CPN no 9 governing the sale of helmets he would change the laws in NSW. Duncan Gay is as good as his word and should be congratulated for his quick action."

Schubert was on my list to try when they start being imported. The Revzilla reviews always that they are the premium helmet for lightness and quietness.
You can buy them from the BMW Dealer in Canberra . . I tried one on, it felt good, but in the end decided on the Shoei Neotec . . Bot the same price . . . Here anyway . .

I believe ACT are consistent with NSW in regards to this as it was their Minister that fought for the Consumer law revoking and consistency across borders...So I would say YES...All States and Territories are covered once SA pass the bill.

I read about the "bicycle helmet for a child under 6" a couple years ago but I couldn't find where I read it - but it was mentioned in this article anyway.
Helmet laws should be a national thing anyway since some of us tend to travel interstate at one time or another.
