Title: Severe Weather
Post by: StinkyPete on December 17, 2015, 07:22:08 AM
Adelaide is in the middle of a December record heat wave with four days over 40c  :H  and Sydney has been hit with a tornado.    Climate change skeptics take note.....

Just looking at our local weather and the hottest day for Dec on recorded for Peterborough was back in 1972 @ 41.5C on the 21st so high temps for this time of the year are not that unusual. Yesterday we only got 39.5C. Won't know what our max for today is until tomorrow.

Just had a phonecall from my mate Darren, who lives in Melbourne. (He owns the house next door to my flat, which I keep an eye on for him)
Darren was complaining of the erk heat in Melbourne today, and asked me to pop on the aircon in his house to cool it down before he drives over this arvo. I assured him that the aircon is not yet needed today.

Only going to 42 in the Barossa today, glad I'm not in Adelaide with 44 expected. Having family BBQ so just wheel BBQ out into sun and use solar heat to cook, how could anything be better. Currently 36 (0930) so hope it warms up soon. Gotta feel sorry for those in the cold areas.

I decided to go for a ride yesterday to get some bike time and relief from the ehat.   It was 40 degrees at 6.30pm when I left home, so I wet my shirt under my mesh jacket and felt quite comfortable riding.   I rode down to the coast at Victor Harbor.   At Victor it was down to 20 degrees and with the wet shirt and mesh jacket I was quite cold.   It was then across to Middleton and I stopped at Goolwa for a sundown coffee.    The trip home was through Ashbourne and Meadows, and as I got closer to Adelaide the temp climbed again.    When I arrived home at 9.30pm it was back to 30 degrees.

(We did have 0.2 mm of rain around 10.am... the rest evaporated before it hit the ground)

Personally, I blame the heat on Daylight Saving... that extra hour of daylight is dangerous!.. with an hour less of 'dark time', there isn't enough time for the country to cool down before the sun comes up again!  :rofl :rofl :grin

Yay, the monsoon is here.  Only 25 degrees at midday, nearly 2 inches of rain in the last 12 hours.  Bloody wimps at the concrete plant wussed out today and wouldn't mix/deliver the concrete we needed though.  Something about they didn't want to work with lightning around.  Hopefully they'll be working Monday.

Looks like the rain has bypassed here some distance to the north of town. Only had a 5 minute mist here that didn't even wet the road, but I can see very low black clouds and a rainbow to my east at the present. Appears to be heading for Melbourne. Still 32 degrees at 7.45 pm

Supposed to be windy with showers here today, currently 21.

It hit 49.4 in Whyalla in 67?-68?    3 day heatwave, 118, 119, 121. (47.8, 48.3, 49.4) and the next day was about 69 (21 .. everyone was in bed with a cold, lol

I was working at the blast furnace at the time. During tapping, radiated air temp was over 176 fah (80 cel) We were restricted to 4 minutes access to the casting floor, even with protective clothing and face and neck shields

Reported temps in Whyalla in those days was a bit of a local joke.. "Official" site for town temperature was from a park, opposite the police station and courthouse... surrounded by tall pine trees, and with the sprinklers operating to water the grass... (read 'evaporative cooling' here)
Our shade readings under the veranda at home were regularly 5 degrees hotter, we lived less than 2 k west from there

When I moved to Whyalla back in 1978 the local directory they gave us told us to expect at least 10 days in a row of temps in excess of 40C during summer; nothing was mentioned about possibly getting 6 inches of rain in February which we had in less than one day.

Did my summer Uni holiday time at Newcastle BHP Plate and Bar Mill- the door would open and the bar would roll out.  Our job was to hook it with our metal rods and turn it onto the rollers that ran at right angles.
WPH&S!!  These days you wouldn't be allowed near it.
I do recall there was a lot of heat involved, but not like a pour would entail.

I'm trying to think of how you could prevent that happening in the future. Normally spill is around 23 °C, so pet than bringing them in to the air conditioning, there must be another way to keep them cool. Hesian bags draped over and dampened perhaps with a trickle of water to keep them damp.
