Title: Failed Hazard Lights - ST1300 - Any ideas?
Post by: ST.George on December 18, 2015, 09:09:44 AM

G'day STriders and good wishes 4 the festive break.
I have a little, albeit irksome problem with the STeed:Wyvern the Dragon 1300 recently went thru a rego check 2 discover that the hazard lights no longer work.
It was the first time they were tested in a cupla years and I had 2 weeks 2 find the cause b4 the roadworthy xpired.
So I researched our site and the US site and double-checked the appropriate fuse and relay and I can guarantee that they r ok. There is no fuse specifically 4 the hazard lights but instead the apt fuse is on the blinkers.
The blinkers work. However, if the system is switched on, the blinkers work but then, if the hazard light switch is engaged while the blinkers are flashing, the blinkers will stop working and will not work again until the the system is shut down and then restarted.
I contacted Atoyot about the problem and he had a ST1300 2003 switch system and relay from his write-off wreck and gave it 2 me 2 test. Turned out all his connections used a different plug configuration and after I carefully rewired the plugs, found that his switch system did exactly the same as my switch system.

In other words, Atoyot's switch cluster did exactly the same as mine - no hazard lights - so the chances that both switch clusters r faulty is slim but not impossible.

So my switch, fuse and relay r ok which only leaves the wires between the switch and battery but I can't see any sign of damage 2 any of these lines. However this seems 2 b the only option left or does any1 have another idea or 2.
I got Wyvern thru the roadworthy by proving the blinkers work and the inspector forgot 2 check the hazards again - so I need it 100% 4 next time and of course it is preferable 2 have the hazards working again.
Electrickery brains required... (Mine r xhausted)
Christmas Cheers 2 all. :beer  HO-HO-HO!!!

It may be the hazard flasher can. At least the 1100 has a separate flasher for hazards

Must only be the police bikes then as I don't have them on mine.

To my understanding, your hazard (warning) lights are on a different circuit to your indicators (blinkers) though they use your indicators to "warn".

Check the switch contacts within the switchblock, and clean if required

Here is a link to the 1300 electrical circuit. Either the switch is us/needs cleaning, or the power feed (that connects to the indicator power feed) has gone open circuit. It may be a dodgy connection in the handle bar loom. The diagram is in colour, and if viewed at 200% is easy to see the layout.

By the way, hazards use the indicator can.

It would appear that ST1300 only has one flasher can, as all The hazard light switch does is turn both left & right on together.  Looking at the wiring diagram the switches are connected left & right in the switch block but common is connected within the bike somewhere.  I think I would check the connection between the common / feed wire. (Wire from flasher can and both switches.

Thanx Tim and where is the flasher can?

The flasher relay is with all the other relays below seat left side

Ok, now I know that a "pot" and relay r the same thing :)
So - (as mentioned in the original post on this thread) - I have replaced the flasher relay with another borrowed from Atoyot - with no change.
However, wot u said about the connecting wires makes sense and I will investigate further.......

A pot is short for potentiometer which is a variable resistor.

A flasher relay is also known as a flasher 'can' because they used to be made with metal cases. Today they are mostly black or clear plastic.

If the left and right indicators are working but the hazards aren't, and if as Tim says, there is only one relay, logically the fault has to be in the switch or in the wires to and from the switch.

Ok, got "pot" mixed up with "can" there and understand the diffo now and will proceed 2 very, very closely xamine the wires and connections in the switch area.

Try squirting some WD40 or like into the opening around the indicator switch and also the hazard switch before pulling everything apart . . . It may work

Yep, always do that Terry but use CRC coz it is better for electronics and I have confirmed that. I have given some of my wiring a clean up with it as well but need 2 inspect more closely now 4 a wiring fault.

There is a special ele ctrical contact cleaner in a spray can. It's non flammable and non conductive.

Search Jaycar for:

Contact Cleaner Lubricant Spray Can
CAT.NO: NA1012

Saw some WD40 contact cleaner in Masters the other day. Under $20

Apparently is also available at Bunnings.

In for a penny, in for a pound.
He's my 2c worth.

I would be looking at the wire going to the hazard switch with a multimeter. Chances are, it is grounding somewhere along it's path.
This would explain a) why it's not working and b) why the flickers stop working only to restart with a reset.
