Ok I've had another random thought. I drive a truck in the Hume highway most nights, and I've always wondered when a motorcyclist passes me in the same direction when I've had my Hi-Beam on, would you prefer I left my Hi Beam on for the extra illumination for a while, or prefer it off for whichever reason.
I always turn it off just in case, and I've never had to experience the situation on my bike yet.

Personal opinion is that I will normally chat to the truckie over the radio and tell him it is ok to leave his lights on if he wants.
-
Same here, I don't mind if high beam is left on . . The truck lights are normally way better than my bikes . .
-
Same for me as unlike a car with it's internal rear view mirror, I don't get dazzled by the lights behind me and welcome trucks to leave their lights on high.
Even when a mate on a bike is behind me, we leave our lights on high to illuminate the road and verges better. :clap

Same response as Diesel.

Not forgetting that it is a traffic offence to do so. Rule 218 and 219 https://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2006L00240/Html/Text#param275 (https://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2006L00240/Html/Text#param275) though I reckon 200 metres is way to close for my eyesight at night.
I don't have a problem seeing ahead with the 1100s lights on high beam at the state limit or less

In some places at night I ride at 10 to 30 kph under the speed limit and I still find that standard high beam is borderline to detect animals waiting, walking or running to cross the road in front of me.
IMHO you can't have too much light riding a bike at night in the country.

You could always just follow the road rules and dim your lights. If i want better lighting i want it coming from me,not from someone behind me.

In my many years of riding the Hume at night truckies have always dimmed their lights as I go past. When my CB is working I ask them to leave their lights on high beam.
In many cases its academic because the traffic along the Hume at night these days in both directions is generally so thick that I'm unable to use high beam or the Ericas.

over the laST 35 yrs moST of my riding has been nightriding. I kinda prefer it.. :eek I dont care much about lights behind me but not having CB to talk to them, moST trucks dim theirs when I pass. I nearly always give the L-R-L-R L-R blinker flash to say thanks and safe trucking, something I learnt in my youth o:) , growing up in my Dad's truck.

I must be different as I cannot stand hi beam behind me. The glare in the mirrors is not helpful at all. Besides that my bike carries as much if not more light than most trucks.

And you should know. :grin
