I agree,  that stretch of country is beautiful,  and September should see it at its best, and the road condition was brilliant last time i was up there about a year ago.  I'll be in this if i can make it,  have to check the diary,

I maybe on a trip to WA from the first weekend in September. Dad wants to go over and see my sis and I'm going with him. His car and no cruise control but way cheaper than taking our territory over.

We have two accommodation and dining options at Rawnsley.
1.  We could stay at the Caravan Park, BYO everything,  and cook up a BBQ and share some drinks and nibbles in their big indoor camp kitchen
2.  We could stay in the Holiday Units, and eat at the Woolshed Restaurant.

These two facilities are about 1.5km apart.

What do you think???  I'd vote for the caravan park,as it will be significantly cheaper and more informal.

Yes, I'd go with the caravan park option. Their camp kitchen facilities are very good. Everything needed to cook is there and a comfy setting to eat in!

Get your butcher to cryopack some  meat, freeze it, and take it up there wrapped in a towel.  It wlll stay cool and won't leak.  Easy   :thumb

We can take some onions, spuds, carrots, bread and it all can be cooked on the big indoor BBQ's.   Bring salad if that's your preference.   :thumb

I think Dad chose the wrong weekend to go Perth otherwise we would done this.

We stayed there sometime in the late 1990's and they used to have scenic flights over Wilpena Pound which borders the northern edge of the property.

Hi folks, I'm keen to put my hand up for this one as well. Would people be going for the Park Cabins, Bunk House or camp sites? I'd probably settle for the camp site as I have most of the creature comforts to make camping pretty bearable in the short term (and I'm trying to save money to fix the rear diff in the ^&#% Jeep).

Cheers ... Mark

Langers, I was thinking of getting a Park Cabin, and offering to share any spare beds.

Thanks Pete, if I am permitted to share, some very effective ear plugs might be in order if there are no doors. Some say I snore - haven't heard it myself so not totally convinced.

Rawnsley Park
Change of Plan

We are now planning on staying in the Caravan Park, and cooking up a meal in the big indoor camp kitchen.
See   http://www.rawnsleypark.com.au/accommodation/caravan-park/ (http://www.rawnsleypark.com.au/accommodation/caravan-park/)

*   The Park has some cheap Park Cabins, but they don't have ensuite toilets and showers, so we'll need to use the shared Caravan Park ablutions.
*   There's plenty of camping spaces if you choose to camp
*   The Camp Kitchen has a couple of big hotplates and gas burners, plenty of tables and chairs and a wood fire
*   Bring your own meat, veges to cook or salad, as well and drinks and nibbles
*   This will be a pleasant and informal gathering, without the Five Star trimmings
*   More luxurious accommodation is available at Rawnsley Park Station, which is about 1.5km down the road if basic facilities are not to your liking

A share in a park cabin would be good for me, if there's a spot available,  i don't have much in the way of tenting stuff.  I don't think their park cabins are very expensive, so if there's no room a second would be little trouble,  but their ecocabins are very expensive (nice, and self contained though), a bit too much for my budget!

I've booked a Park Cabin for Saturday night.    It has a double bed in one room, and two double bunks in the other.   Since it's in my name, I bags the double bed, and you can all fight over the bunks.  Bedding is included, and please let me know who's taking up the offer.

This ride is next weekend, and Rawnsley is about a 400km ride from the northern outskirts of Adelaide.   I've booked and paid for a cabin that sleeps five at a squeeze, and Langers is camping.    We'll take our food, drinks and nibbles, and socialize in the lovely big camp kitchen which has a wood fire.    Perhaps you could confirm your attendance and I suggest we meet at the Bolivar Caltex Star Mart at 8.30am on Saturday morning.   JohnG, you may need an early start from Port Elliot, and Langers and JohnG may wish to meet at my place at for a 7.45 departure.  PM for my address if that plan suits, or you can make your own way to Bolivar.
Bring it on.......   :thumb

G'day Pete
Yes, I'm in and will meet you at your place (I have your address from an earlier PM) at 7:45. Looking forward to trialling the new tent (one I can actually stand in to get dressed and sleep without the walls touching head and feet, and doesn't weigh a ton).
I've been toying with the idea of heading up to the Cockburn Pub on the Sunday so I can visit Wilcannia on the Monday to check out the Darling, the current level is almost 3.7 metres compared to 0.0 at Easter (I'll save that subject for Saturday night). Probably stay in a country pub on Monday night rather than do a 1200km day to get back to Adelaide - if I decide to do it. Anyone would be welcome to join me if they have the free time.
Cheers ... Mark

Thanks Bodo Glimt.  I reckon the Pichi Richi Pass is one of the best rides in SA.   I went through there  last weekend and the Flinders is looking as green as it's been for years.  ++

Same for Horrocks Pass; hard to believe there was a fire there a couple years ago. We had to detour via Quorn on that trip to Whyalla so we came back via Germein Gorge.

Off to Port Augusta tomorrow morning so I'll try and get some pics/video on the way back.

Thanks for the invite Pete.At this stage my wife Kahrin is coming with me and we plan to leave a day or so earlier .We plan to go through manum ,Morgan ,Burra ,Peterborough ,orroroo,Hawker etc.We are going to stay at Wilpena pound as there isn't any vacancies at Rawnlsey .we will then ride out to the caravan park to meet you all for tea.I think we will have a very low ride back in the evening looking out for the wooly jumpers.

I'm also looking forward to the ride.  Pichi Richi pass, port augusta to quorn, is my regular coffee run, but sometimes i do the quorn to wilmington to port augusta triangle,  or else the longer one through melrose and the port germein gorge. All the of those gorges are lovely esp at this time of year. Should be a good one, and a change of scene for me.  I did see a couple of expired roos in the pichi richi pass a few days ago so if you travel at sundown or in the dark do take care.

It's a pretty basic cabin and has a double bed, and two double bunks.   We have myslef, MikeP and Richo in the cabin so far, we we can squeeze you in.   :thumb  I will be good to have you along.
JohnG is staying at Wilpena and Langers is camping.   I suggest BYO food, drinks and nibbles, but there is some available in the small shop.

Due to the sh-t weather ,Kahrin and I did not leave a couple a couple of days early and meander up there at our own leisure as we had hoped.Anyway I'm still coming this time armed with a tent and sleeping bag where my wife normally sits.So hope to see you all there.I cancelled our room at Wilpena although sad myself I'm sure my bank manager wouldn't be at $230 dollars a night .Some things are worth the price!
