Title: Camera Tryout - Again
Post by: alans1100 on February 05, 2016, 10:57:10 PM
With our Feb RTE fast approaching I decided it was time to play around with the GoPro mounting and find a more stable location. I thought about under the mirror so decided on the fairing under the hole beside cover (see picture below). I did a test run and though the cam alignment was out there was minimal vibration so after a rethink on the mount I came up with the camera level and aimed as close as possible to where it should be then went for another run.

I rode some of the roughest streets in town I could find and I can't complain about the result in the clip.

The main street through town is about the only decent street here.

Cheesus Alan, I don't know how you put up with all that traffic and those pedesrians milling around ready to dart out in front of you . . OMG . . next they'll be putting in traffic lights . . . Oh and the way you squared up and took out that pothole . . Fab!

Seriously, looks a great mount point for the camera, very steady, great angle, I might try that one out . . Not sure if it'll go there on the 1300 though . . Try it when I get back home . .

When are you going to do Horrocks Pass with it on?

not quite lights but they did put in a pedestrian crossing on the main street where most people crossed the road to get to/from supermarket/post office.

I thought about that point before but didn't think there was enough flat space for the mount to stick - the LH side of the mount is about 1mm over the gap between fairing and mirror housing giving a flat surface for the rest.

Don't know yet - next time we go to see Heather's aunty over in Whyalla.

I'd say you nailed that friend.     ++

But don't be afraid to try a few angles along the way - even if it is a little more 'jumpy', to keep it more interesting for the viewers... something I have had pointed out to me.     ;-*

I have a mount under the top case aiming to the rear, plus the helmet but until now I haven't been able to get a steady shot to the front. I've considered a mount on the rear of the trailer looking forwards (maybe one each side) and I've considered a mount on the wing it but seems a little low.

With the new Nikon cam and some ram mounts I have another cam that can be used on a dash shelf (need new screen first) for forward cam shots leaving the GoPro and a couple of other cheap sports cams (Heathers) for various other shots I could use.
Heather wants me to mount her generic GoPro style cam to her helmet for the next ride so that might prove interesting.

We had a little cam tryout ride to Jamestown this morning. It one thing getting a stable shot at town speed limits and another at highway speeds. This time around all good at up to 120k/h indicated (downhill with a tailwind) and at my usual cruising speed of around 100 k/h all good. Even the rail crossings weren't to bad. Will do a brief video of the best and worst and post later.

Now I can work on a trailer location or two for video but need to get some extra mounting stuff first.

The closer you can mount the camera to the fairing the better.  the suction cup mounts with long arms are going to be subject to vibration.

I only use the 3M sticky stuff on the mounts as it's fairly reliable after 24 hours. I don't get vibration from the mount on the helmet as shown in the pic. I made this one up for Heather and it should work on the trailer as well.
