The bike is a '10 model that has done 13000km.
Last Thursday evening the speedo / odo stopped working. Actually, during the ride, both did start working again intermittently.
How should I best troubleshoot the problem? Or should I go directly to replace the VSS at a cost of around $191.88 at The Honda Shop.

At just 13 thousand she's brand new. I'd be checking all the connectors on the back of the instrument panel before doing anything else.

My 08 model did this while on an RTE, I disconnected the battery while I had lunch, reconnected battery and it fixed the problem, it hasn't happened again. . . . . Worth a try . .

Pete, that's what I thought. At 13000km the bike is hardly broken in!
Terry, I disconnected the battery and left it for 1/2 hour. That should have been plenty of it was going to do anything. Unfortunately the problem is still present.
So to eliminate any Voltage drop, due to a sluggish battery ,I charged for 24 hours with my CTEK. After charging, this afternoon the problem is still present.
Oh well, the next step is to gently remove the Tupperware , disconnect and reconnect all connectors and see what eventuates.

Is there someone near you with a 1300 that you could use their VSS on your bike to see if that is the problem?

So The Hondashop in Midland has played with it today. Just got a phonecall confirming the failure of the VSS.
The Desk guy (Andrew, I think) wanted to sell me a new VSS for around $230 - $240 - one only in Melbourne. I cant remember exactly. I told him The Hondashop Online Parts catalog had the part for $197. He said that may be so, but the Over the counter price is as He quoted.
So, given that attitude, I have just placed an order with Partzilla - All Up price including freight is $91.30. I will also need to factor in the exchange rate of around 1.3. So probably a landed cost of around $120. A big difference.
I really should have attempted a Statutory Warranty claim with Honda Australia, but can't be bothered.

The Honda Shop will give us a discount (OZSTOC) which brings the over the counter price to the Online price. Great price though :runyay
