Please, guys and gals... be careful out there.
Always be aware of other drivers! A quarter of this years road toll in Vic has been riders, and not always their own fault.

Edited to bring numbers up to date in title

Yep Kev i am hearing ya. I came as close to being wiped out as i ever want to come on the Lions road last weekend Stupid cow nearly got my girl who was riding a 100m behind as well. I was in the dirt on the left and i literally could and should have slapped her across the face as she cut through a blind corner completely on the wrong side of the road. Half a meter wider and i would have been through the windscreen.

NSW ROAD STATISTICS FOR 2016:
62 dead (same number as this time last year)
30 of those killed were drivers
9 were passengers
9 were motorcyclists
14 were pedestrians
Source: NSW Police

One would hope that they would actually advise the number of
accidents errors of judgement as a more accurate way. e.g. one crash, two drivers both dead or one crash (worst case) 10 people dead (5 each car)
All anyone can do is be pro-active with their road safety.

I was in the road safety business for a lot of years. Law enforcement, better crash protection in motor vehicles, driver education, improved road design and engineering etc have all had an impact on lowering the road toll but one thing we'll never control is the mentality of some motorists. I learn't that you can fix many things but you just can't fix stupid!

:blu13 Riding into the city today to renew my security license. coming to to an intersection, female driver on my left checking her phone, checks left then proceeds to pull out in front of me, middle of the 2 lanes she finally sees me and stops dead in middle of the lanes (blocking both). ME grab a handful of front brake, a little of rear, slowing, slowing.... BUMP! my front wheel meets her door and crumples it :grin Get off bike check mine for damage, NO damage...Tell her what an inadequate driver she is :cuss need to check left then right. NOT phone :phone, left then go :well and then rode on a little shaken but ok.
Maybe 3k further on i come to another intersection, Taxi sitting in the middle of the intersection.....couldn't make up his mind which way to GO. I gently reminded him he's in an intersection with a blast from my AIRHORN :-((( sometimes i wish people would learn :rofl :rofl :crackup :blu13left

Don't let the statistics stop you doing what you love! if in doubt as to the safety on our roads google the road toll in the 70's & to put it into perspective google the corresponding population, those really were the days when sex was safe & motorcycling was dangerous!

Victorian number has now risen to 22 m/cycle deaths this year.

Sadly I've just learnt that the Dale Hardy, the motorcyclist seriously injured on the Bruce Highway near the Pine Rivers bridge on Friday 4th Feb 2016, has passed away as the result of injuries he sustained in the accident.
Dale was a friend and client of a friend of ours.
He was traveling south on the Bruce and was hit by a northbound ute which had been hit and sent out of control by another car. The ute also took out two other cars.
As a result, most mornings now the Bruce variable speed zone is set for 60 km/h. Decent guard rails or barriers would have prevented this accident.
-
:blu13 My niece had a similar incident when a speeding car lost control and smashed into her car sending her down into the gully area and up into the oncoming traffic on the other side, narrowly missing a fully loaded semi.
" Decent guard rails or barriers would have prevented this accident." EXACTLY :blu13left

Yeah a guy I know died a few weeks ago, hit a stray sheep. He didn't have his helmet done up

Victoria has had its deadliest start to a year on the roads, with 77 dead in less than three months - 24 of them motorcyclists.
Ahead of the Easter long weekend, police are turning their focus to motorcycle safety in a bid to reduce the road toll, after 19 riders were killed in February alone.
-

Sunday, 24 April 2016 14:54 - I think this makes it 28 in VIC, so far this year:

Have to say there are some roads that are just to difficult/dangerous to ride this being one,(Heid/Kinglake Rd) the other is the Reefton to the top of the Marysville Woodspoint Rd. Way too many nutters out there. Just a thought.................. :eek :wht11
-
A lot of them unlicenced, disqualified, stolen bikes. Shouldnt have even been there and judging by some of the riding I have seen, dont realise that risktaking makes them vunerable. Up near Rawson the other day just cannot wait for a moment, and craaazzzyy speeds.

Agree Garry, I enjoy riding a lot of nice n twisty roads but not at racetrack speeds.
I see a lot of riders who ride far beyond not only their capabilities, but way too fast for public roads. They forget there are not safety runoffs at each corner, not a medical team waiting to attend, traffic is going both ways not just in the direction of their travel. I suspect peer pressure, immaturity, poor bike condition, poor protective gear, bad luck and sometimes even another vehicle also contribute to these accidents.
I had to chuckle at a rider on another forum who complained about having almost ridden into the back of 3 "bloody asshole drivers" in the same day . . . He couldn't even see that he was probably the "asshole".
I think that the only way to get a zero road toll is to not have anyone driving on any roads.
-
Wondering how many of these riders are just part time riders. The ones insurance companies see as low risk as they only ride three or four months of the year.
-
A couple of years ago, I cruised along the scenic coastline between Inverloch and Cape Patterson, and was horrified at the number of hi speed crotch rocket clowns who blasted past me on that short 12 Km stretch, overtaking on blind bends and often on the wrong side of the road.
There were 11 bikes that passed me in 3 groups during that 15 minute ride, 3 of with P plates.
I wonder if some of this particular group of riders are now part of the road toll?
-
If not its just a matter of time for any who ride like that

Oh no! Very avoidable.

Number of cycle deaths has increased again with just hours left this year. Please ensure that we as responsible riders, do not add any more.
Beware of cage drivers who have caused many of these so called 'accidents'.
Stay alert.

Final Vic tally for 2016
Motorcyclist deaths up 19% in Victoria. AAP on January 1, 2017, 4:18 pm
Motorcyclists accounted for 19 per cent of all deaths on Victorian roads.
Out of 291 deaths on Victorian roads, 56 were motorcyclists or passengers on the motorcycle.
Many of the riders had been riding illegally.
"Twenty four of them shouldn't have been on the roads at all; they were either not licensed or they weren't licensed to ride the bike that they were on," Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said.
The number of riders on the road has also grown by 20 per cent in the past four years, VicRoads' chief executive John Merritt said.
"Obviously there has been an enormous growth in popularity of motorcycle riding in the state and sadly some of that is being reflected in the road trauma that we've seen this year," Mr Merritt said.
Many are returning riders who might not have used their motorbike licence for 20 years.
With the higher rate of middle-aged riders getting injured or even killed, Mr Fryer has urged people to be honest about their abilities.
"Go and get some riding lessons to make sure you're right to ride," he said.
There was also a big increase in elderly drivers between 80-89 years killed on Victorian roads, up 87 per cent.
Last year, stricter tests were introduced for those hoping to obtain a motorbike licence and for full-licence holders.
Mr Merritt expects the impact of that to show in rider's attention to safety.
More than 50 per cent of all road deaths were on country roads.
