Title: Doh! Fuel container leaked
Post by: ST2UP on March 25, 2016, 05:22:02 AM
I carried some additional fuel on a recent ride that even the numbers confirmed I wouldn't need.....but I guess the Boyscout in me one over in the end.

I had 430 kilometres to do between fuel stops overnight but that could have changed if I came across a road closure etc......and the ST is just to heavy to push any more than one side of the shed to the other  ;-*

I used a 5ltr plastic Jerry can......a relatively new black and yellow one with the spout. Now I understand expansion and that and a apparent poor fitting lid is what caught me out.

Before I did the trip I put only 4.5ltrs of 98RON in the container and left it in the sun for most of the day.....gave it the occasional shake if I walked past......NO leaks  :thumbsup

But you know what it did on the ride of course ....... :cuss

Could not smell fuel on stops....but opening the side pannier at home  :|||| probably quarter of a cup full in the pannier !! And a few drops had leaked through the pannier lid hinge on to the exhaust  :whistle

So my question.....How the  |-i am I going to get rid of the fuel smell from the pannier that normally will have a porous pannier bag with clothing in it ?? Cleaned with degreaser etc.....What next ??

Kerosene is normally used to clean up fuel and oil due to it being able to evaporate quickly...then just leave it open as much as you can to air...if you get stuck could always use a cup of bi-carb to absorb the odours maybe

As above and perhaps clean with soapy water and leave in the sun, which will dry and evap. the fuel traces

I don't about the fuel cleaning bit but maybe the issue of leaking fuel is more temp related. All fine in the sun; everything heats up and expands no leaks but at night the opposite happens - everything contracts so what's gonna happen?

I carried the fuel in the trailer once as I thought it would be safer than the side case but I could smell the fuel (at the end of the day) even though I had no leaks: so a faulty sealing ring on the lid. Fuel only gets carried in the side case now when towing. The container with the faulty seal was discovered when pouring fuel from it as it leaked when doing so.

Buy a bottle of Vanilla Essence . . Yep the stuff used for cooking . . Wipe or spray it all over the inside of the pannier . . Might need a bit around the outside near the lower seam especially . . That should get rid of the smell . . Might need an application or two . .

Scrunched up newspaper sprinkled with vanilla also helps to absorb the smell, change a couple times per day

Add some lighter fluid and a match?

Good scrub with neat detergent, let it sit for a while then hit with a pressure washer.

When dry, spray with eucalyptus. Of course you could just mask the smell by pouring beer over the interior.

I'm with PC.  That's a surefire way to shift them.  If you need to use the pannier urgently, chuck  a match in to hasten their demise.
