Title: SA RTE Ideas for 2017
Post by: StinkyPete on June 27, 2016, 02:25:10 PM
OK folks, here's where you can have your say again and suggest some locations and dates for SA RTE's for 2017.

Ideas that have been suggested so far are as follows....
Old Mundulla Hotel (near Bordertown)  http://www.mundullahotel.com.au/ (http://www.mundullahotel.com.au/)
Tri State RTE at Balranald again, but perhaps in March 2017 so an not to clash with NatRally 2017 in October

I can add Sedan Hotel which should give some bendy road options for the city riders https://www.facebook.com/SedanPub/?fref=ts (https://www.facebook.com/SedanPub/?fref=ts)

This one was put forward a couple years ago http://www.gdaypubs.com.au/SA/mintaro/51701/magpie-stump-hotel.html (http://www.gdaypubs.com.au/SA/mintaro/51701/magpie-stump-hotel.html)

optional WA/SA meet up same time as Border Ride in August

The Stanley Bridge Tavern at Verdun in the Adelaide Hills is another possibility, and  is nice and close to Adelaide.

The overland corner pub is worth while. As would somewhere in the Clare valley.

There's the historic "Magpie and Stump" Hotel in Mintaro that Alans1100 has suggested.

Thanks John.  We had a pretty successful RTE at Overland Corner Pub a couple of years back, so it's worth scheduling again, and a picnic lunch at Burra Gorge is a very interesting suggestion, and certainly one that I'd be keen on.

I like the Burra gorge idea something completely different.  As long as it not in winter

There's also Winkler Park that we went to just South Of Saddleworth as well. We haven't ben to Burra Gorge for ages; it may have been before the road was sealed to Roberstown.

Hey Nigel, has that re-ticker has given you a burst of energy?

Silverton - a two day ride each way for me, and relatively straight, flat roads ain't my-cup-of-tea.

Balranald - a half-day ride, but an overnighter for me.

Definite O`nighters. Ride from Mildura to B Hill is an absolute blast. And there's plenty to keep us amused at the Silverton Hotel o:)

"The Tin Shed" RTE at McLaren Vale on the 15th October this year is in the heart of one of our major wine regions, and I know someone who lives nearby.   :thumb

Richo and I rode to Mintaro a few weeks ago to sample the wares at the Magpie and Stump Hotel, which is one of the suggested RTE locations.   The ride was good, but I thought the food was a bit ordinary, and I wouldn't be rushing back.

I have been getting itchy feet for the last couple of days so I am heading out for a ride this morning.  The Barossa is just down the road so I feel some "research" is needed.  Some very good riding roads down there as well.  If any one is free they are welcome to join me
Title: Re: SA RTE Ideas for 2017

I did a quick run down to the Barossa via blanchetown and Sedan. I picked up a ride partner along the way in a fellow rider on a 650 Deauville.    Rode from Adelaide to blanchetown "together" and introduced ourselves over coffee and chips.     Lots of good venues and the Jacobs creek winery has a very nice set up.   Lots of the smaller wineries have some nice drops as well.  I think a few more runs to check out venues and nice reds May be needed.

Perhaps something to think about. A couple of years ago I organised a ride encompassing all the ferries (or punts) across the Murray in SA (excepting Narrung - we reasoned it wasn't really over the Murray). We started from Crafers and rode down to Wellington through the Fleuireu , over the river and on to Tailem Bend and across to Jervois, up past Murray Bridge to Mannum and across then up to Purnong, across then up to Walkers Flat, across and up to Swan Reach (not crossing this time) but onto Loxton via the Wunkar Golden Grain Tavern for a well earned rest stop (this is essential) then onto Loxton and up to Lyrup and across the river and onto Cobdogla for overnight (the Cobby C/van park is very accommodating with cabins and camping) and a great meal at the Cobby Club. Then next morning, bright eyed and bushy tailed off to Waikerie, over the ferry (here we then did a 180 and returned and rode south of the river (because it was more interesting) and crossed over at Cadell and crossed back at Morgan. It was about 15Ks out of Morgan to Blanchetown my back tyre blew so the bike (Honda VT750) was flat topped back to Waikerie and I pillioned back down to Swan Reach (on a Guzzi Norge), crossed the river for a final time and then through the twisties of the Adelaide Hills back home. It was a great ride and I'd love to do it again but this time 100% of the way.  Autumn or Spring would be best.
Cheers ... Mark

Another possibility for an overnighter is having a destination being Gladstone in the mid-north of SA and staying in the old Gladstone gaol - you get your own cell, there are great cooking facilities for breakfast and the local pub does a great steak. Winter is not the best time to visit, particularly if you only have a tropical weight sleeping bag.
Cheers ... Mark

Anymore more ideas forthcoming - I would like have some input from members who just sit on the side and watch instead of joining in. You may know of a place etc. that others are not aware of.

Dad and I leave Perth on the 20th Sept and I should be back home on the 24/25th so just over week for more ideas to be put up before I start on next year's RTE calendar.

Putting this forward as well

One more to think about. I've just been advised the Wallaroo to Lucky Bay ferry is going to recommence in October 2016. I've taken a bike on the ferry both ways and it is a nice break from travelling if you are knackered and not looking forward to the trip from Cowell to Pt Augusta to Pt Wakefield or vice versa. Sounds a bit like heresy for the long distance/FarRiders but I'm thinking about the poor sods who have to front up on Monday for work (like me - ok, it's all about me).
Enough of the pre-amble - what about a trip to Coffin Bay for a weekend. Don't know about ferry times at this stage but at the right time of the year there are some wonderful roads to travel followed by the best seafood in the country and then back on different roads onto the ferry for a 2.5 hour kip and 1.5 hours back to Adelaide or where-ever you are headed.
Cheers ... Mark

Thanks to everyone for all the great suggestions and ideas, and I've listed them below.  I hope I got them all.

Mundulla Pub, down near the Vic border
Balranald Tri-State Overnighter in March
Sedan Hotel
Stanley Bridge Tavern in the Adelaide Hills
Overland Corner Pub
Magpie and Stump in historic Mintaro (Richo and I recently checked this pub out and the food was pretty ordinary)
Silverton Overnighter
Burra Gorge for a day trip BYO picnic
Coffin Bay overnight
Port MacDonnell overnight
Quorn overnight and the Pichi Richi Railway
Winkler Park Saddleworth for a day trip BYO picnic
Don't forget the NatRally in Wooli in October

I suggest that everyone who wishes to contribute picks their top six ideas, with perhaps Balranald and Wooli making it eight formal SA RTE events for 2017.   While the monthly mid week RTE to Birdwood is a fixture, it has not been well attended, but I'll keep it there as an option, and simply post under that thread if you wish to attend, and see who responds.   Alan and I will use the feedback to create a RTE calendar for next year.   In the meantime, if you want to go for a different ride, over and above those that get listed, simply put up a post under "South Australia".

At the moment I'm looking at :-

Sedan Hotel
Burra Gorge
Stanley Bridge Tavern
Port MacDonald overnight perhaps linked with Vic for two state overnighter or Mundulla Pub with the same option
Overland Corner
Silverton overnight

Thanks Pete,

The train link I posted I couple weeks back was from Port Augusta to Quorn and return. Train leaves PA at 10:30am and leaves Quorn at 3pm. Adult Fare $82 Return or Concession $76 best in the winter months for steam engine.

It's ok I haven't got that far yet and it will more than likely be mid to late August sometime as I'm looking at the Quorn one for early July to coincide with steam train ride dates.

I also need the first weekend in August kept free for those who might wish to attend the Border Ride

Is it worth adding the Border Run under the SA rides as well?   It is in SA, and it might spur some interest in this iconic gathering.

No issue in adding it as WA usually does; I can make it up as a SA/WA event and add some of the FarRider links in as well.
