Hi team,
I have found a potential bike that i am looking for, but i would like some advice for what to look for as i have been out of the 1100's for a few years now.
taking into account that i want this to be a project of sorts, so i am looking for the basics to be right, not buy pristine condition.
I went and looked at a 1997 unregistered White ST1100 today with 256,000km on the clock, it has had two owners, current owner has had it since 2001, and has done 210,000km of it himself, has all the books and keys, bike looks to be sound, has all the usual wear and tear marks of a bike that is 19 years old. (current owner has upgraded to an FJR1300)
bike has not been ridden or started for six months, plastics are in decent shape with a few repairs needed, but it has a new rear shock, a new rear tyre, and police light brackets.
It has both Panniers but no top box (side panel is off the bike to charge battery, was just not on the bike when we looked at it)
I am pretty keen on it, but i would like to hear from the brains trust on what i should really go looking for, in case of surprises and the like....
Will be paying between $1,200 and $1,500 for it as is.
So tell me your thoughts and opinions (constructively), on what i need to look for and check out)

The pipes look to be worth 1/3 of the price.

Perhaps it may need a timing belt change. Valves may need adjusting. Rear wheel drive cush , rear wheel spline wear

I know you are more than knowledgeable but have you thought about an ABS model.
I say this because:
a) it is what you are used to on your previous ( and current??) bike
b) they are safer??
c) just because...... :grin

True but the ABS is a passive safety thing and only activates if it detects a wheel lock up while braking (simplified).
The down side is that if a ABS modulator fails its big money to have it replaced and I guess most people these days wouldn't fix them.

passive safety is better than no safety.
I know we should all ride within our limits but as is so often the case we often do not follow this advice. :o which is way many of us have little chats with the :cop
I do tend to agree with your comment about the cost of the unit though...... but I think for me this is one of those items I would be dedicated to replacing. Mirrors .... nah, blinkers ..... nah ..... braking systems .... oh yeah! :grin

My ABS was the difference between going under or going over the ute which turned across my path.
Without ABS, I would have locked up the front wheel, dropped the bike and slid into the chassis rail/petrol tank of the ute.

Mate, you have to stop going to such lengths when testing things for us :eek
The helmet, the gloves, the jacket and now ABS :H
I'm starting to understand why you are taking a break from the field testing for a while :wink1
But in all seriousness you make a bloody good point (ABS is awesome :grin)

I put it under "Passive Safety" as there are people out there that believe that ABS works every time you use the brakes when it doesn't.
After 10 years and 180.000 km on my 1100 I doubt if the ABS as activated though I am aware of two or three incidents that it may have.
The ABS system would need checking out when buying an older model. If the warning light globes have either blown or removed you wouldn't know if the system was working properly or not.

Back to the original post, check when the timing belt and all rubber components were replaced and if possible pull the rear wheel to check what the wear is like on the final drive, replacement will cost more than you will pay for the bike
