Well i'm happy to say that my farkling went well today :beer.
I managed to install a GPI with out killing myself or the bike! ++
If you'r one of the few that can follow instructions :|||| (I'm not), then its quite easy.
Hardest part was searching the internet :CB-- to find the correct wires to connect to. Turns out they are under the Left hand side plastics.
Did a dummy wire up to make sure it worked, which it did to my surprise :o, then looked at different options for mounting it. Settled for next to the speedo.
Will post some pics in the morning
If interested i can put together a "How to do" if people are interested, but it really wasn't that hard.

Awesome work mate, If you can put together a "How to" that would be awesome :thumbsup
I look forward to checking out the pics :thumbs

UPDATE:
I have added a PDF doc outlining how i installed the GPI to the first post

Very interested but can't find the file :(
-
Apologies, i managed to find the file, which GPI did you get?

And what bike did you fit it to (model and year)?

Mine was from
http://stores.ebay.com.au/waimaozhijia10 (http://stores.ebay.com.au/waimaozhijia10)
or just search for
FOR Honda ST1300 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 Gear Indicator
or you can try this one
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Honda-ST1300ABS-ABS-2008-2009-2010-2011-2012-Gear-Indicator-/121390182039?hash=item1c436b2e97 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Honda-ST1300ABS-ABS-2008-2009-2010-2011-2012-Gear-Indicator-/121390182039?hash=item1c436b2e97)
I fitted mine to my 2006 ST1300PA, but they look like they will fit all the ST1300's.
It was an easy process, just need the wires from Speed Sensor, Neutral, Tacho, Power & Earth. If the ST1100 has this then i dont see why it would not fit them too
It arrived in just over a week to WA even though it said 3 to 4 weeks shipping

Cheers for that! I see you are in WA? Wanna help me fit one? LOL!

There's also another type which uses magnets placed near the gear shift. I'd get one but I can't be bothered getting under the bike to clean off around the gear shifter.
This is just one and there are red ones as well http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Blue-LED-Universal-Digital-Gear-Indicator-Motorcycle-Display-Shift-Lever-Sensor-/251616925596?hash=item3a9589979c:g:7MoAAOSwDNdV6V0Q (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Blue-LED-Universal-Digital-Gear-Indicator-Motorcycle-Display-Shift-Lever-Sensor-/251616925596?hash=item3a9589979c:g:7MoAAOSwDNdV6V0Q)

There is some info about GPIs here:

I purchased my GiPro one from :-
http://www.amcmotorcycles.com/contents/en-uk/d614.html (http://www.amcmotorcycles.com/contents/en-uk/d614.html)
A little more expensive than $35 but for 08 (and maybe late 07) and after ST1300s they are plug and play.
-
I have an older 13, its the same as Mr2u's steed, a 2006 ex police bike, so it looks like it won't have the plug and play harness. Really keen to get on setup and will place the order this later today.

If you need any adevice or help, I'm more than happy to help out. If I'm on R&R at the time can even help with the install as your only 10 min up the road from me.

The hardest part is mounting the display. I used black silicone to stick it to the panel, and then ran a bead of silicone along the lead to attach it to the plastic.
-
3M VHB would probably work well to stick it on. Problem might be getting it off if it needs to be replaced!

I cut a very tight slot for the cable to fit into and used a cable tie underneath :-

Thanks to mr2u I went and bought one of these as even after having the ST for 6 years am still not sure sometimes if am in 4th or 5th without comparing the speedo and tacho
This is the one I bought http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121390182039?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121390182039?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)
Once I had all the fairings off and a look at the tightly packed wiring loom under the LH side fairing I decided to see if I could tap in just behind the instrument panel. I found that all the wires you need are here, not so tightly packed and easy to tap into with the plugs pulled out.
I just cut a slit in the rubber boot, poked the GPI cable through it and soldered the GPI wires to the correct honda wires.
These are the ones you want:
GPI Bike
Ground Black Green
Ignition switched +ve Red Brown/Black
Tacho pulse Yellow Yellow/Green
Speedo pulse Green Pink/Blue
Neutral light Orange Light Green/Red
The white wire of the GPI is grounded as part of the programming process and when this is finished just put a bit insulating tape over it and leave.
I mounted the unit underneath the little duct on the RH side of the dash using some HD double sided tape and also a cable tie around the cable which conveniently comes out of the unit on top at the back. Its in a good position visually and doesn't require drilling any visible holes.

When programming I ran a short wire from the GPI white wire and grounded this on the windscreen mechanism....it took me a few goes to program it and good idea to take it for a ride to check before putting fairings back on. When programming the fifth gear it flashed faster but didn't display a bar as in the lower gears, this was a little confusing.
I reckon if you are clever you should be able to install in this position without having to take any of the side fairings off, just the windscreen and the front dash cover.
On the road it works really well...it predicts where you are going with gear changes (ie assumes 4th is next gear change after 3rd) however if you have changed back to 2nd once you let clutch out it gets it right.
I love it, no more trying to change up in 5th thinking your in 4th or having to do mental speed/rpm calculations to know what gear you are in!

Well done on the install.
Does it show the gear you are in when stationary with the engine running?
My dearer GPI that plugs into the diagnostic plug only knows the gear when you are moving with the clutch out.
-
Awesome work Snigdog, thanks for sharing mate :hatwave
-
Thanks Biggles.
No it doesn't know mechanically what gear you are in and can only calculate this by comparing speed/revs. Exception is neutral because it uses the neutral light signal to confirm this
So if you are in neutral (display=0), pull clutch and change gear it always displays 1st because that's where you normally go (even if you went straight to 2nd). If the bike is already in gear when you turn the key on it runs a little flashing routine which means it cant compute...
But once moving it displays by prediction which gear is next when it detects rev change on clutch pull.
But once clutch is out and speed/tacho ratio restored it will correct if it has predicted wrongly.

I am currently two-thirds of my way around a lap of Tassie and can report that my GIpro (purchased just before I started the trip) is probably the best accessory I have purchased for the ST1300.
Installation was plug and play and very easy, thanks to those who posted here.
I no longer have to watch the tacho while riding, match it with the speedo and try to guess what gear I am in. It is so much safer when going through the fast twisties and the high speed sweepers because I am only looking at one (bright) readout and knowing that I have to be in a specific gear for my riding style. I will be in the right gear which benefits me in two ways - I will be in the appropriate rev range to accelerate smoothly and I will also have the right compression braking to slow me down and prepare for the corner.
The fewer mechanical inputs I have to consider allows me to concentrate more on other important factors while cornering, such as line and body position.
It also prevents me from the other two issues many have experienced - those being travelling along a highway for several kilometres in fourth gear or, alternatively, being in fifth gear and looking for a sixth!
So, two thumbs up for this product from me.
-
I was looking at a gear indicator for my 1100 and deciding whether it would be an easy install or not.
Looking at the one with magnets next to the shift lever on the gear box though next to pedal might be a little easier to install.

Done both of those over the years - even now I think the 1100 could easily handle a higher 6th gear.
-
I can count to five, so I feel no need for a GPI. In any case, a quick glance at the speedo and tacho will tell me what gear I'm in.

Not always, Pete ;-*

-
at 3500RPM, the bike will be at about 110 Ks in top (5th). If the revs are higher change up.
I raely look at the revs or speedo, so a gear indicator is of no use to me.

Sheesh! You can't get away with anything around here! That's over 4 years ago. :eek
Maybe Pete was wearing mittens that day. It helps when digits are involved to be able to see the digits. :grin

I don't need it either. Probably won't do it as it'll mean getting under the bike and cleaning off 18 years of accumulated grime so the magnets will mount beside the shift lever.

:rofl That's funny and excellent background research. Perhaps TouriST has missed his calling as a polly.

It would be as a Research Assistant. Pollies don't have time to read- far more important things to do, as we've been informed lately.

It's not that they haven't got the time more that they can't read that's why they need assistants.
