Hello All,
One of our very fine members  Nh478m PJ (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?action=profile;u=196 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?action=profile;u=196)) is in Hospital after coming off second best with a Car, his words:

Quote
Bike might be wiped out, left calf and knee crushed, right scapula cracked but thanks to atgatt and especially the evoline 2 the rest's ok but achy. HO hum at least it's a comfy bed and the nurses are pretty.

he is in good spirits but I am sure he would appreciated a message or two with Get better soon written in it  :thumb

Trust your left leg isn't too badly damaged!  I'm thinking "crushed" means bruised, not broken.  Still painful.
Upside- all those motorbike movies you can watch on DVD!
Hope the bike was insured, or your attacker is insured so you can get an even better ST.
Do ya reckon the flash badges were any help in the prang?   :popcorn

Bike's being taken down to Yorkshire tomorrow so there's a scramble now by one of the sons-in-law tonight to get the expensive bits off before it disappears. If this one is terminated there'll be another '13 soon.

Eight weeks minimum to drive again and we'll see after that for riding. At least just now the weather's good to be able to work by remote link from the garden once I'm finished in here.

I've been surprised by how fast the injury lawyer crowd get your contact details. Three have called so far!

Thanks for the good wishes - Dave none of these is a patch on the nicer post-mistress.

Being in here certainly puts things in their right order of priority. The way it's set up in this hospital there's people on the same floor with dementia, etc and hearing their anguish through the night reminds me that I'll be getting better, they won't.

Regards
PJ

Even the pillows are looking attractive now!

I too had a little fall last Sunday the 25th March on my way home from the Barry Sheen Races in Sydney. About 30km south of Singleton on the putty road I got pushed wide on a blind corner by a white car on my side of the road, lost the ST in the gravel and went down. Bike stopped across my lane and I in opposite lane on blind corner. Car didn't stop of course. Some minutes after I crawled across road to get out of road of anybody coming around corner, three bikes stopped to pick up bike and get bits off road. I  had winded myself pretty bad and hurt right shoulder. One of my new friends got on the bike, and after being upside down just a few minutes before fired on the first touch of the button (Honda reliable) and rode around the corner to a parking area. With some duct tape and zip tyes I was able to hold enough bits together to get home (235km). Parked bike in shed and got in ute to hospital ED. They let me come home today Thursday, but will be touch and go wether I can make Blackheath. Will need a few parts and panels to get my old girl looking good again, and the bones will  heal, so all good in the end.   :bl11

Sorry about your "off" STeveo.  There are some tools out there in cars, that's the truth.
Don't feel you have to have the bike looking perfect for Blackheath.  Just get her going reliably.  A few battle scars will add some character for the weekend.  I'm told chicks dig scars.    :whistle

Nothing wrong with either of the STs in the protection and reliability stakes.

My ride home from the hospital is set for 4pm today hoo-bloody-rah! Then it's six to eight weeks on my arse!

Thanks for the good wishes. The scars on ST are only cosmetic, remember I rode home so it would make Blackheath, but if my bones don't heal in time I could be in trouble. Will these women who like scars be there? might be a better incentive to do my exercises to heal!   :bl11

Bad luck there PJ - looks like they're being thoroughly thorough though!  (bet you had to read that twice!)      :crazy

I hope the neck wasn't a result of watching all those pretty nurses walk past!             :well                 :whistle

And STeveo
I too had a little fall last Sunday .......... I got pushed wide on a blind corner by a white car on my side of the road, ....... Car didn't stop of course.

I don't think anything can make my blood boil quite like these instances! - That A$$hole would have looked in his mirrors to see what ramifications occurred from his 'mistake', and then just decided it was 'easier' to split rather than do the right thing and fess up - kinda like the carpark bingle train of thought where they nudge/hit your car, and then take off.

We should be able to have mercy killings for people like this, or 'spear' them, or take their babies... or......     :cuss

Anyways - you're OK and that is the main thing. Hope we can have a beer together at Blackheath ol mate where I promise NOT to bring my soap box.      :wink1

It's not just cars either.... check this vid....

160 mph head on motercycle crash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXMPYD6-bfg#ws)

160mph! (add the two closing speeds together) ....

Some motorcyclists downright REFUSE to ride Mt Glorious on the weekends because of the instances of bikers 'overcooking' the corners and running wide into the other your lane.

Get well my brethren - and do it FAST pls.      :well

Cheers, Diesel

Thanks Diesel. Bit of a rough night (first night home) but the pills should kick in soon, then get dressed and go look at the old lady to see what I can salvage. Can feel the bones starting to knit now, not so much grinding when I move, so I am still hopeful to get to Blackheath.  :)  :bl11

Saturday morning and home now. Like a baby and ife is really earning her keep right now.

Son in law who designs builds and races bike's went to strip the more expensive bits off the wreck was shocked I still had a leg after what he saw. The whole left side is gone. Forks are pushed out to the right. Frame is buckled so the tank has to be pried out from between to get the tank cover off.

Left side crash frame is crumpled onto cylinder head left side.

Motor seems split In several places with all fluids lost. Radiator is folded over the crank case cover on the left side and the legal people are really having trouble keeping all the drool inside their corporate mouth.

This guys insurers better have good cash reserves!

Sounds like you'll definitely get a new bike and your medical costs.  Just gotta sue them for a new neck and you'll be right.

Hey NH478m - I just caught this thread for the 1st time. Glad you are ok. I hope your recovery is going well. Probably a good thing you can move onto a new bike instead of a repaired one with stress weakened parts that may have come apart later on. Will you be coming to Blackheath in a car?

NH478m, sad to know you cannot get your bike back, even for parts. All the hard work you put into it to get it right to suit you and now gone. That is why I haven't made a claim on my ST, the insurance would not cover the new parts that I put in, yet alone the labour. I plan to get her tidied up and back on road and use her so I wont be worried about getting scratched again. The excess would be about the same cost as the parts I need.  :(
Tony, will not be making the rally. Xrayed again yesterday and bones are not healing as well as expected, but at least I have dodged surgery. Will be several weeks yet before I am back on bike. Hope to catch up with you fellows later in year.  :beer   :bl11

It has been nearly five weeks now and I have most of my movement back although very tender still. Felt good enough to sneak out on my FT500 single yesterday for a run to the bank and parts shop to get some bits for the SU carbs I am rebuilding for a mate. The 500 felt so small after the ST, like riding a 125, but so good to be on two wheels again. Didn't try any heroics, just a careful run around town. The ST is slowly getting back together but time, money and how much I can do in a day are limiting the rate of repair.

Nh478m,
how are you doing with your healing? Hope your coming together ok and the PMS is not getting you down. Get well soon and back on the bike.
Steve.

My first ride on ST today. Have the fairings welded back together and fitted, will look good at 100km/h going past, but a bit crap close up. Am still waiting for the tip over bar cover to arrive. New screen from Bike Screens arrived today so I had to make sure it worked, got it higher and wider than standard and works a treat up to 160, very little wind noise at 100 and makes me sit up straight to look over it. No more slouching, so my back will be thankful. I also got to remember why these are such nice bikes, smooth power and stable on the road and so easy to ride. Falling in love again.   ::)

Nice work Steveo and PJ.

I rode the 'Putty' on the way to the National Rally - oh my! What a hum dinger! Although most enjoyable, I could see why the unsuspecting and enthusiastic cagers and motorcyclists could easily overcook some of those corners!

Glad you are back on 2 feet (and wheels) Steveo. C'mon PJ - time to give your missus a break and get out there too mate.

Wellness to you both.

Hi Steveo,

Yes things are coming along ok. Surgeon tells me he's considering whether to tell me my knee won't stand anything bigger than a moped though. Another piece of bone separated from the top of the tibia during the week so that's two bits floating around now, plus I"ve no cartridge left in that knee now.

Shoulder blade's almost whole now and the neck is feeling less fragile.

Right, where's the nearest Can-Am or Wing trike dealer?!

All the best.

Hi Diesel,
I'm just about fit again (as I will ever be with Arfur Riotus) although a few bumps remind me I'm not quite there yet. Bike is back on road and as good as I'm going to make it for now. Only insurance I claimed on was for a new windshield, so got a better one to suit my height. Would like to go to the NSW RTE, but 8hrs from here and I'm still not confident enough to go that far. Did a short run to Dorrigo last weekend and stayed overnight, all good except for the white Hilux with screeching tyres on my side of the road around a blind right hand corner (unbeliveable to be in the wrong place and time twice) who missed me but of course didn't stop. I had to stop and take some deep breaths before I could continue. Has made me very cautious on blind right handers, open ones no worry. Will be out again for a planned ride to Walcha in a fortnight and maybe some midweek runs if the weather is good.
How are you doing Nh478m?

Hi guys,

Getting there but as for everyone else in this predicament, just not quickly enough!

Shoulder is spot on, the left leg is getting stronger with aggressive physio and ultrasound to break up all the gunge still in there from the burst muscles. The ortho surgeon now reckons all will be well for riding big bikes again so that's brilliant.

The neck is the only limiting factor now. Had another load of images done last Thursday and at last the healing has started and can be seen. The neuro surgeon reckons it'll be October though before my neck will stand a helmet again. (going to be an Evoline 3 this time)

Anyone know where you can get supplies of patience from?!

PJ

Thanks Steveo & PJ - obviously we're all glad things are progressing as well as they can be under the circumstances.

PJ - were you surprised at the extent of your injuries and healing time, given the relatively low speed impact - and even though you had ATGATT? Are you changing/adding any armour or anything?

STeveo - flamin 'ell - TWICE??!!!! - You sure you're not really riding in USA with that many others on the 'other' side?

Thanks both for the updates - we like to hear +ives from -ives.

Cheers, Diesel

PJ,

You need to start an exercise program to strenghten those neck muscles. Start by wearing a plastic icream bucket on your head for ten minutes a day ( I suggest eating the ice cream first) and work up to an hour. If you can stand the ridicule, you are more than ready to get back on the bike with a proper helmet

 :grin :grin
Title: Re: OzSTOC Member injured Bike accident
Post by: Nh478m on June 16, 2012, 10:00:58 PM
Sorry but the ice cream would have to be still in the bucket before I did that!

Yes to be honest I was shocked by how serious damage to both me and the bike was. Looking at the damage the bike sustained you'd be forgiven for thinking it happened at twice the speed. Even the V-Stream was split and the cops couldn't find a part of the left pannier that was more than 2" square! Only plastic I know but still...

Adhering to the ATGATT rule meant that despite injuries, there wasn't a singe break in the skin which really helped prevent any infection so at least that was never an issue.

Right, where's the vanilla flavoured?

Take care on the blind ones Steveo - glad you're mending too.

Hi Guys,

Dave Roper has reminded me that an update on recovery, etc is well overdue. Sorry and I hope Steveo is coming along too.

Hopefully my final meet with surgeons is on Monday. I'll be driving then for the first decent length of time then in to the airport for work after that for the first time in a long time.

On Friday (tomorrow) we're checking out a 'Wing' for sale up in Elgin just in case that's what SWMBO wants but my money is still on a CGR ST sometime in the next couple of months once the neuro guy says I can put a helmet on again.

Meantime the RV and a wee special car I built in 1990 are our motoring enjoyment modes so from next week they'll really be getting a bashing until I order the bike - whichever it turns out to be. Both vehicles were tested today and both passed with zero advisories.

Hopefully all the legal stuff is going to complete soon then we can just learn any lessons and get on with life.

Having roundly abused my body over the years (no Dave, not that either!) I've had many periods recovering from injury and damage with one or two of them lasting nine months or so away from work but I can honestly say this one has seemed to be the longest. Perhaps at my time of life I need to concentrate more on smelling the roses at last instead of seeming to always be rushing from one thing to the other!

I retired at 50 then started working again at 55 and now at 60 SWMBO finally suggested the other day that maybe we need to retire properly as life seems to be getting shorter. One more year will do it I think.

Anyway that's the epistle for now.

Take care out there.
Regards to all.

Right, that's the decision made!

It's another ST1300 for us.

The 'Wing' up in Elgin was nice but I damn near cried when I saw the nearly new 13 standing next to it and when I sat on it, wow!!!

So, another few weeks and it'll get ordered or the hunt will be on for one in the right colour.

Nice to know where I'm going at last.

You do get a better class of insult on the Oz site than on the UK one!

We Convicts were always the smart ones.

Steal a loaf of bread and get free passage to paradise (compared with UK weather).  What's not to like?
You've got a feed and a permanent holiday!

That's it!

Went and bought a 2010 model in Candy Glory Red.

Picking it up Monday in Northampton. It's got 18k on it but is in gorgeous condition and after all, that's what they're built for.

All the farkles are ordered and nursey is getting ready to be a garage widow again for a while!

Can't ride it for another two or three weeks but a wee test ride around the dealer premises (just to check the clutch and throttle you understand) is ok.

Feel like a kid again waiting for Santa!

What am I going to do for the next five days?

Be careful. Motorcycling is tricky enough when your body is 100%. Ease back in, the nurses don't miss you THAT much! :)

Soon as we're back up North with it on Tuesday I'll take a couple of photos. Straight after that it's two weeks of putting the deep inside mods on it while one mirror and the Smuggler are resprayed. Previous owner dropped something on the mirror housing! Only mark on it.

Bad news is while motoring down here with the trailer to get the bike, the RV gearbox popped a couple of synchro rings for fifth so I'm having to hold it in gear at speed. Oh well, that's life.

How's Steveo doing?

Pretty good thanks PJ. Bike back together and have done a few short runs, but still very nervous on blind right hand corners. Shoulder 99%, ribs still remind me they are there sometimes. Getting ready for the overnight to Inverell.  :) Glad to hear that you are getting back on the road. The time spent away from the bike drags and nobody can help with the withdrawl symptoms. Enjoy the new bike.  :thumb

Got it!

Drove the RV with the trailer behind for 17hours to get back here at 2am Tuesday and it poured with rain almost every inch of the way. Fifth gear has gone altogether so it was a slow slog - the RV is now in the shop being fixed so we can get away this weekend.

The bike is really nice. Soon as we got it home, the bodywork came off. In the process of loosening every fastener I can reach and then replacing what I can with lubricated stainless items. If I leave carbon in they are properly lubricated before they go back in.

Seems in pretty good order and so far I only needed to heat one fastener to ease it out.

So far the full depth fender extension is on, the rear shock protector is on, the stebel is on, the under mirror light brackets are on, the hellaFF75s are stripped for wiring up, the radiator guard is on, the V-stream is on, the highway blades are on, motovision headlight bulbs are in (they do make a difference)!

Enjoying every farkling minute and it's a lot faster and easier this time around.

Front glimmering LEDs and the electro pods for the rear brake lights are here for fitting. Bar riser is here. Chassis protection pads are here. Gear indicator should be here Friday. Badges are ready. Grip pads are nearly on -they are a bugger to get on. Lever socks are on. Armrests are here. New seats are here. Ram mounts will go on tomorrow including the WSO GPS Unit fastened to the right pannier top. Tailbrites are here. Travel badges are here. Side reflectors are here but i need to make make the rear brackets yet. Power outlet for left pocket is here but leaving all the electrical connection stuff for one big session. Intercom is here.

Need to get the topbox spoiler and high level brake light ordered next.

Looking good but I was so childishly impatient to get started I forgot to take photos.

Trying to not lose too many brownie points by limiting garage time to a very frustrating minimum.

Wow! - I needed to take a breath just READING the list! Nice work.     :eek

Try giving the 'Love n Kisses' a few quid and send her to Fortnum & Mason's or Selfridges for the day... Oh, it will cost you - but what price do you put on your relationship with the ST huh?       :wink1        :grin

Cheers, Diesel

Oh yeah - PICS PLEASE!       :well

Oh dear, oh dear it's raining here yet again so doing the garden is out. I wonder what I can do in the dry while it's so wet? Hmm.

I know, a couple of minutes in the garage should do it.  :thumb

I will start to put the bike back together tomorrow.

Big holdup has been trying to organise changing the tyre valves. Previous owner had put on poxy scooter valves which were so split it was scary. Colour matched angled Ariete alloy valves going on and they should be strong enough to carry the tpms sensors.

WSO power supplies, intercom unit, rear brake electro pods, front glimmers, stebel, headlight lamps, FF75s, light brackets, highway blades, left fairing pocket 4 way sockets, repacked wheel bearings, new pads, new oil, new final drive oil, V-Stream, 2 reservoir bracket Ram mounts, seats, rubber water sheet under seats, arm rests, switches for glimmers/intercom/WSO system all in, new plate ordered, colour matched tax disc holder, gear position indicator, new top box plate, 8 way fuse block fitted below pre-load adjuster, Ram mount on right pannier handle, tailbrights, badges, bar risers c/w powerlet socket, all now complete.

Just now got to get the valves done, reassemble the lot and start riding.

Only other outstanding items really are very minor and won't impact ride time. Tank cover/bag and pannier courtesy lights are examples.

I am surprised that I can insure this bike for £80 less than I could NH478M.

New Evoline 3 arrives tue or wed.

Somehow a few month's work have happened in just a week! It's so much easier second time around.

Regards to all.

The Ram mount on the right side pannier is to mount the wife's satnav. Two up she navigates...........
.

.
.
.
........and warns me about speed, comments on people's gardens, complains about needing another coffee, asks why we can't stop at that distillery we just passed, let's me know when she just has to take a comfort stop, etc, etc, etc.  |-i

The bike's almost back together. New valves on today, balanced the wheels myself and back on plus all but a couple of bits of bodywork back on. Mounted the glimmer switch.

Photos in a few days cos we're taking some time up North in the RV for a bit.

First ride will be two up to an outdoor theatre on August 1st evening.

Here it is. Almost finished. Just the turn indicator alarm to fit now once I find it!

The Hellas need to be mounted on new brackets as the stock ones don't allow sufficient elevation for the beams to align properly on the road. Ordered up the stainless strip off ebay and I'll fabricate them soon.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/61443001@N08/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/61443001@N08/)

Had our first rideout today (150 miles) and the knee while stiff and slightly unbending now, worked well.

I can't say enough about how useful the highway blades were. Without them riding would have been very uncomfortable for the leg and I reckon that even if I decide that I need the deflector kits on, I can reach the blades easily with just a minor mod to the kit in way of the maintenance lids.

Having said that it was pouring down most of the way and the stock fairing kept us nice and dry anyway.

Wife and me are both convinced the machine is way smoother than the 2003 model. The PFI has been sorted so I don't need to fit an FCE this time. The tyres are BT020s and I'm impressed and will be sticking with them. No more Avons or Pirellis for me as the 020s are so quiet and talk about planted!

That's it then!

I'm so grateful for all the support you blokes have laid down for me these past few months - thank you.

Best regards
PJ
