Title: Bad news
Post by: Kev Murphy on February 03, 2017, 05:15:18 AM
Just found out a few minutes ago that a close friend has just been diagnosed in late stages of cancer.
Family has been called in, as he only has a few days left. Organs have started shutting down.
He came home from work last Friday and said he felt a bit 'off'
Only had a coffee with him at his home last Sunday. I am totally devastated.

That is really sad news Kev. I feel for you, hope you are able to have some quality time with your friend and get to share the things we always think but never say.

Thats no good Kev - Remember though your friend hasn't spent years suffering from this disease so in a way it will be quick and I am sure he will be well cared for. His family & friends have the chance to say goodbye, which is something I see a lot of people never getting that chance. Condolences to you and his family  8)

Just returned from the hospital. Good turn up of friends, about 15 of us.
We left when his family arrived.
He is still lucid and in good spirits.... even had a joke... mentioned that the boss still owes him 4 weeks annual leave, which he had intended to take at the end of this month.

Sounds like he's got the best possible attitude in the circumstances- helpful to everyone.
All the best as you spend some time with him.  Sometimes days can go on for a while.

Kev,

I know what you are going through, I went through the same thing in Thailand 2 years ago. The Wifes Uncle (and my friend) died of lung cancer while we were there on holiday. At least your friend isnt suffering, as that puts a massive strain on every one.

Just remember, that we will be here for you should you need it.

Jamie is still chipper, but looks a lot greyer than this afternoon. He is a little doped out with pain killers, but still managed big smiles for us visitors, and was fairly chatty. It's his 50th birthday on Monday, and he is determined to celebrate it the best that he can.
It's very hard on his two grandies, aged 4 and 6, they do not fully understand why Grandad is in hospital.

Not long home after visiting Jamie today. He is a little subdued, but not as doped out from the meds as he was yesterday. Is still very positive. Always the jester, he said not to bring any birthday booze in for him on Monday.
His missus, Angie, is staying with him today and this evening, and as a token of respect we will not be visiting this afternoon/evening so they can have some quality time together.

Jamie is going downhill rapidly. The light is on, but no one home. He failed to recognise family and friends today. Absolutely gut wrenching.
We only had a short visit as he is absolutely exhausted. Very hard to understand how someone we all love could fade so fast. Yesterday he took a sip of water and put it down "Too hot to drink!" was his comment.
There was ice floating in the glass. :'(

The pain relief meds can make the brain very fuzzy.

It is ver hard for the family and friends, but it does relieve the pain.

Jamie passed away without regaining consciousness shortly before 5 am, on this, his 50th birthday.

Fly high and free, my friend.

We laid Jamie to rest this morning. About 80 people present. Wonderful guy, and proud to call him 'my mate'

When I arrived in Portland in 1990, I stepped off the bus with limited funds, a suitcase, a backpack, and a toolbox in hand, and a job prospect with a company that I knew nothing about. I had only ever passed through this town once before, as a fuel stop while touring to Melbourne in 1973.
Jamie approached me as I stood looking around and asked if he could help.
I queried the location of the company, and he offered to drive me to the office, several blocks away. I was in the office for around 40 minutes or so, and was taken on, to commence work at the beginning of the next week, 3 days away.
When I left the office, Jamie was still waiting, and drove me to a caravan park where he knew there was affordable accommodation.
He returned to the park later that afternoon and invited me to his home for a meal, where I met his wife Angie and his then 4 year old son. I have been a frequent visitor to their home over the past 26 years, and we shared a love of fishing on many weekends.
Top mate, and I miss him dearly.
How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.

I'm catching up on what I've missed while I have been away.
I really wish that this was not one of the missed posts.
Condolences to you, Kev, hardly seems adequate.
Dave.
