Title: 2010 / 2011 top box question
Post by: Kozzy on July 26, 2017, 09:04:11 PM
Hi Guys
I need to buy a top box for my 2011 model 1300. Hawkabury Honda have a number of top boxes advertised at $650, but state they are for the 2010 model only. I've spoken to them on the phone and they can't tell me why I cant fit it to my 2011 model. It seems Honda doesn't list such information on it's parts list. I would have thought it would have come up as a different part number, but notjing listed at all apparently.
So, can anyone give me any info regarding what the difference is, if any?
To my eye the box looks the same, so maybe there's something in the mounting bracket perhaps.
With a saving of about $300 l'm keen to grab one if it'll fit
Thanks

To my knowledge, there is no difference in the mounting points between the years.

They are all the same, when I my 2011 in 2013 they had a grey one in spare parts and painted it to match the bike (Black)
As it was old stock and I was buying a new bike I got it for $500 painted

I'm not aware of any difference either.

When I ordered a top box with my ST13, the dealer wanted extra for the mounting plate.  Just make sure you know what's included in the quoted price.

The only difference between any of the top cases over the years would be more related to colour of the lid but everything else should be the same.

hey Kozzy... welcome to the forum from up the north... when it comes to a topbox for your STeed you may also want to consider the fact that an oringal "Honda" topbox will not fit two full face helmets.... whereas an aftermarket topbox, such as a Givi 47 litre, will... the lid latch on the Honda Box can also be a concern as it is  possible to unmount the topbox when accessing the lid, therefore losing the topbox when riding away... i have my Givi topbox bolted down through it's mounting plate (which comes with the Givi topbox) because it also is the backrest for the copilot, navigator, lollie supplier... pillion. cheers, John & Kate.

Thanks John, i did consider the Givi box but wasnt sure where to source one with all the right mounting hardware. I've heard of the factory boxes parting company with the bike but didnt understand how that could happen. The factory box on my 1100 was well secured with no way of coming adrift. I've put in an offer on the box at Hawkesbury Honda but now youve given me something to think about.
I'm setting the bike up for a two up Tassy trip in January with some friends so i want to make sure I get it right and give the co pilot a nice snug place to admire the scenery.
Hmmm, decisions, decisions  :runyay

Hi Kozzy,

What can happen is when you unlock tge top box, there is one latch that opens the to lid, or underneath there is a handle which allows for the whole top box to be removed from the mounting plate. You can then relock the box and carry it like a suitcase.

There is a flouro orange strip on the inside of the handle which makes it quite obvious you haven't locked it in properly.

I used to lock the box and then reach under the handle and pull it towards the back and up ensure it was locked in. A couple of times I had to relock, but it never fell off.

Further to that, I've lost my topbox at 80 kph with unhappy consequences.
As Gadget says, you can easily check the handle is latched- firstly there's the red warning flag and secondly, it looks wrong.
The reason mine came off was the latch under the box wasn't engaged with the mounting plate.  If I'd given the box a firm lift it would have been obvious, but I just did the handle check.
These days I give the box a mighty wrestle whenever the box has been off the bike or even if the latch handle has been moved away from the box.

Hi Kozzy,
Once you are used to it the mounting works well but like the panniers once it has been off and refitted you need to do a double check that it has been refitted correctly. The other thing I have found about the top box latch that I have taken it off the bike and with the lid unlocked and the contents have fallen out.
Honda do little arm rests that attach to the Honda top box and also a high level stop light for it.

The armrests are fine if your pillion has 6 inch humerus bones.   :grin

OK.  I know that isn't humerus.    |-i

Thank you everyone for all the advice and input. Ordered the original box from SA in the end. I was keen to keep the bike all original and at $650 delivered it now on its way  :thumbsup

Thank you guys for all the info and input. Got the stock box that was supposedly ONLY for a 2010 model according to the Honda shop and it fitted straight up with no problems at all. Makes me wonder why they were so insistant that this box would DEFINATELY NOT fit my bike, even though they couldn't tell me why it wouldn't fit. The good news is though that you guys know more than Mr Honda. How good are you guys? Well done and thanks again. Now it looks like a proper ST  WOW:
