G'day everyone, I juST thought I'd let you all know about my upcoming adventure across, and up and down the AuSTralian Island on STranger. On Wednesday morning 3/8/17 about 1am I will be leaving home in Picton NSW and riding 1113k's to Barmera SA, then spending the night and day relaxing before leaving Saturday 1 am 5/8/17 and doing a FarRide FR12 on the 41ST Border Run to Border Village, a further 1318 k's. The next morning, Sunday I'll ride back across the Nullabor to Port AuguSTa 949 k's, Monday morning after a hearty b/faST (included in room tariff) I'll head north up thru the red centre of AuST. to the Opal capital, Coober Pedy, a short ride of 542 k's then spend the night underground. The next day will see me ride to Alice Springs, 688 k's, o/n before heading off again for a long day and 130 kph (legal limits) 1496 k's to Darwin, STaying with Wendy, where I'll spend a day or 2 maybe 3 playing touriST as I haven't been there since 1975. Depending how my health is handling the trip I'll decide whether to venture home via Far North Queensland and down the eaST coaST to home or head home back thru the centre , the way I went up, but do an IBA Centreline ride which is 'Northern' CoaST to 'Southern' CoaST in 36 hrs 2723 k's. Then make my way home along the coaST back to Picton. I have to be home on or before 24th AuguST. :eek

I shall see you at Border Village.
-
++ looks like a great ride. Look forward to the ride report.
-
We're not leaving home until midday Friday and we should be there before midday Saturday.
1:00 am starts; glad it's you. I'm just thinking of going to bed at that time; It'll be hard enough for me getting to bed before midnight so we can leave Ceduna at 6:00 am for the last 480 km.
Wish you well on your little ride.

:dred11 :blk13
Alan I'll be stopping at Port AuguSTa for BreakfaST then Ceduna for lunch and coffee's :thumb
see ya at the finish. :grin
-
That's just :clap freakin awesome Mr Yted.
Hope you have a safe and wonderful adventure :thumbsup

Well planned, allowing for exigencies along the way, and keeping it sensible.
I love the middle-of-the-night departures. You have the road to yourself.
Like everything, there's a downside: it can be very cold, and the coldest hour is around dawn.

Bill I have recently purchased Zarkie heated gear, Gloves & Touring Jacket and I'm hoping Zarkie get my order of Pants liner and heated insoles delivered before my departure. I have both bikes hardwired for the Zarkie gear, and yes the early departures are great STranger has plenty of light. I'm taking a set of 72wLED floods along to try them out against the 60w LED spots I also recently purchased. I'll swap them over and compare them out in the darkness..
I had to google 'exigencies' and see that I have considered that. I have tyre repair kit plus compressor, a few extra spanners, lecky wire and fuses, and of course STrangers moST used cosmetic, 100 mile an hour tape. :grin and a healthy bank balance :thumb
this ride isn't about being a touriST or nor do I have any focus on certified rides, its juST about going for a long ride with some order about it, having some booked accommodation, not juST seeing where I end up. And of course arriving home afterwards. :clap

I'm more worried about the wildlife.
-
I'm more worried about the wildlife.
And rightly so. Every FarRider dreads an encounter, and we do all we can to avoid them. That said, the biggest hit a FarRider has had in recent times was around 11:00 AM.

:dred11 :blk13
Spent the day checking everything and organising cargo on STranger and decided to get the rear tyre changed before I leave. I could have left the current PR4 on til I got to Port AuguSTa,, but I reckon the centre would have been very bald. New PR3 I have is getting fitted on monday. New pads will go in when the wheel goes on.
I changed out the 30w spots for new 60w's checked all the fluids, fitted an OMNI cruize.
Single aka Ian dropped in this morning and I purchased a BagSTer cover and tankbag from him, so I fitted the cover but wont be using the bag this trip as I have my other tankbag neatly fitted over the rear cowl as I have done on previous trips, its a good place for my camelback in the top pocket and my many medications and toiletries in the bottom keeping cool. In the pod conversion I have tyre repair kit, tools, extra spanners, air compressor, tarp, 100mph tape and OzSTOC flag for NSW ACT.
Left pannier contains, 5l jerry, wet weather gear, bike cover, DriRider Nordics and runners
Right Pannier will have clothes, you know socks and jocks, shirts and trousers thermals OzSTOC shirt and rally T's
Topbox will have jumpSTarter kit, coolbag with water breaky drinks, laptop, spare gloves, either sunny's or my other spec's and plenty of space
-
Better that you changed your tyre now than wait til PA.
They didn't have a Bridgestone in stock to suit mine when I needed one a year or two ago so bike had to spend the night in the workshop. Though they are a Honda dealer, they also do Suzuki and Yamaha. Being a country dealer and by the look of the tyres that are visible from the shop front you'd have more success with a dirt bike tyre being in stock.
-
Don't know your ride plan between the PA and BV but riding two up and towing the trailer on the 2015 ride I filled at PA, Wudinna and Penong.
Port Augusta - Wudinna ........ 256 km
Wudinna - Penong ...... 283 km
Penong - Border Village ...... 407 km
I left the trailer at Ceduna for the last leg for Penong to the Border (407 km - 23.5 Litres) we did quite easily. 10 litres in the RH pannier just in case but not needed though I put it in tank before Horrocks pass on the way home.
This year's ride will be a repeat except for the fuel stops
Home - Port Augusta ..... 127 km
Port Augusta - Poochera ..... 327 km
Poochera - Nundroo ...... 290
Nundroo - Border Village .... 328
-
:dred11 :blk13
I'll leave Barmera with a full tank, get an atm docket.. and then refuel Port AuguSTa
Port A to Ceduna, hoping the headwind isn't gale force.. refuel and food STop
Ceduna to Nundroo top up tank then on to Border Village,
Sunday B.V to Penong fuel, then onto Wudinna fuel and onto P.A refuel & o/n before heading north...
-
Port A to Ceduna, hoping the headwind isn't gale force.. refuel and food STop
Did the reverse direction of that in 2007 and arrived in PA with 1/2 a litre to spare so you should be ok without a trailer in tow.

:dred11 :blk13
Today I received my heated pants in the poST, I took STranger for a ride 100k's on some twiSTy roads to scrub in the new PR3 fitted on Monday, and to try out all the Zarkie gear connected together,Hmmm toaSTy warm :H I gave STranger a polish and made little adjuSTments to the spotlights and made sure again everything is secure. :thumbs
STranger's big FarRide and Aussie Adventure STarts tomorrow at mid-day. I leave home headed to a mates place in ForeST Hill,Wagga Wagga overnight juST to make the following day a little shorter ride to Barmera SA..
I will poST up my progess every coupla dayz,, and STay safe. Not able to attend any STate Policemans Ball this year so I dont intend on buying ANY tickets whatsoever :cop and I intend to make it home by the 23rd AuguST ;-*
Watch out I could be in a town near you. :well

LaST night was spent chatting with a dear friend and wifey at ForeST Hill, a reSTless night saw me wake up 10 mins before due to hit the road. so after coffee raisin toast and more chats I left at 930 for Barmera, SA The rain STarted about 10 mins and it continued all day. Why oh Why can I not go through Mildura and Remark without rain. great view of Barmera Lake from my room, and I've ordered a cooked big breaky for the morning. The manager wasn't keen on cooking b/faST at midnight as I'm departing here at 1 am Sat for the border.
1,114 kilometres on my journey so far... :grin 9,700ish to go
tomorrow is a lazy reST day with an early 2 bed evening... I'll go for a walk around this little village to find an ATM for my STart docket and walk along the Lake and take STranger to the servo and top up his tank for the FarRide. :eek

BankSA has an ATM - On the main street - just checked the banks website to see if it was still open.

How are you travelling apart from your bubbler/spot problems Mr Yted ?
I'm thoroughly enjoying the ride. today riding back to Port AuguSTa with WAG Glen was great, having someone to chase was 100% better than chasing my self across the country.
For the laST 50 k's to Border Village finish line I had to lower my speed to save fuel, even tho I have 5ltr in the pannier. I STill dont know if my fuel light works and when I filled STranger up I STill had 1 1/2 litres going on my refill of 25.5 ltrs.
I'm unsure as to the cause but when I arrived at both B.V and here at Port AuguSTa tonight both my knees have been swollen. :think1 it may be the knee armour in my riding pants. Taking them out tonight, but tomorrow wearing riding jeans heading north.
I'm buggered at the end of each day but waking fresh to go again. tonight I wont be woken by the snorer in the next room like laST night at the village.. mentally I am coping well and riding/ living the dream,,
Wont be leaving for Coober Pedy til well after sun up to avoid the many roos on the road out of P.A
As for spot well today I STarted bubbler at Nullabor roadhouse and when I got here I found the battery had gone flat and shut down the phone and no spots were recorded. very early am today I checked the PUBLIC status of the ride in the trip manage part of SPOTWALLA and it shows public so I dont know what I'm doing wrong the ph is configured and registered the web api thingy is enabled the dots are green ,, so I GIVE UP. I will continue to start it and see if its uploading points, that I can see on the trip,, and when I can get some help I'll screen shot the trip...
:popcorn :popcorn :popcorn :popcorn
going underground tomorrow night, I hope there isnt an earthquake that buries me :eek

STill had 1 1/2 litres going on my refill of 25.5 ltrs
You should have had 2.5 ltrs left, its a 28 litre tank. Most I have put in mine is 27.6L. You can squeeze a little more in if you keep allowing the fuel to settle a bit and filling to top of lip.
-
I was :think1 youse was on da :blk13

Glad you enjoyed looking at a Wing all day Johnny. I also enjoyed the ride. We were just so lucky with the rain or lack of and our timing when passing that Toll Road Train :wink1 .
Enjoy your trip home. The FR, Micheal, on the Beema who we passed several times today arrived at the motel where I am staying, booked a room and then asked about a bike shop in Port Augusta. He had been travelling a little slower than us because he has wires showing in the centre of the tread on his back tyre >:() .

Just as a comparison I filled the tank at Penong and put in 25.23 litres 406 km later at Border Village with mostly a head wind and on par with Johnny's 1100. Going back the other way I put in 20.6 litres at Penong with a tail wind.

I didn't see them either.
When I was working in Kimba last year I used to see a few between there an Iron Knob. It appeared to be the same lot moving east following the road.

:dred11 STranger really got to STretch his legs going north from Port AuguSTa today. FirST Stop was Pimba where I got fuel, what a delay that was when I went in to Pay. A lady ahead of me who used the diesel pump paid for my unleaded and they wouldn't let me pay, they wanted me to pay her $76.00 diesel bill. well you can imagine my response to that. :well they manage to find the lady before she left, over near all the touriST boards and get her to pay her bill and finally allow me to pay mine. :OldMan back on the road there was hardly any traffic and I swiftly rode along, practicing for the NT limits. I arrived in Coober Pedy around 4pm here time, and refueled then checked in at Radeka's underground.
Went for a walk and had an Emu pizza from Johns pizzeria. :eek for dinner and after checking emails, 2 ph calls back home to let mum know I'm STill alive.. I'm off to bed soon and will be back on STranger around 8 am heading for Alice Springs and maybe a detour out to Uluru. :grin
STing around lets me know its good to be alive. :grin

Gday Paul, I'm certainly enjoying the great riding roads in the NT and the speed limits. Sorry to read your not well, that's ok I was thinking STranger and I might enjoy a little roo spotting :eek under the full moon around Alice before bed :grin
it is a little cool this evening after arriving all sweaty from the heat... :grin
where's good for breakfast before my tomorrow ride? Good idea Gary.. :thumb

today I rode from S.A. Coober Pedy, to Northern Territory, Alice Springs.689 k's. I didn't venture out to Uluru because it would have meant a 1260k ride and I wouldn't have arrived here to my booked room at Alice Motor Inn, till very late. Had no problems with STranger today and was happy as a kid when we hit the 130kph speed limits, which STranger went over and above himself. :thumb I think he forgot they reduced it from 160 about 6 months ago. :eek The STuart Hwy coming into Alice Springs has some amazing landscapes. I was in aww and really, really enjoying myself scooting along. Lucky for us I reminded STranger about the 130 limit approx. 40 k's from Alice, and not long after what did I pass, not 1 but 3 :cop heading south out of town :grin
I'm holding up well and definitely WONT need the Zarkie heated gear till I'm headed south from Brisbane in about 12 days.
Tomorrow I'll be heading further north towards Darwin. Not going to do the 1600 odd k's in one hit, will overnight somewhere around halfway. someone mentioned the Devils Marbles nr Tennant Creek,, will google map it and maybe actually do some sightseeing.. ;-*

From memory the first open speed section started about 25kms north of Alice Springs at the "highest elevation" marker on the right heading north.
I don't recall any 160 kph zones in the NT.
The NT limit remains 130 kph; no open zones at the moment. Pity.
On one of our trips to Renner Springs to meet up with Wendy and NTRebel I was riding comfortably on my Yamaha XJR at 160 kph when Saaz pulled away on his Triumph Trophy SE because he wanted to experience 200 kph. Needless to say it was during daylight hours and no sign of animals.

There was a hiccup with Johhny's SPOT yesterday, stopped reporting at Tennant Creek. He overnighted at the Pink Panther Hotel at Larrimah (everything else between Threeways and Daly Waters was booked out). Heard from him around 8.30 this morning and he is due in to Darwin anytime now.

STranger has endured the :H heat and humidity in Darwin today. We ventured out and went riding around the city and out to Casuarina and I visited the Museum of Arts and Culture, then watched Danae play hockey before back to Wendy's for a frittata for dinner. :eat
Tomorrow I will be doing a check over lQQk on STranger checking him out to see if anything needs doing and changing the 60w led spots to led 72w floods, before the next leg to Mackay, Qld, another 2790 k's to go on the clock.. :grin Enjoying every minute STill on this journey.
I'm planning of leaving Wendy's around 10.pm tomorrow night to avoid riding in the 33 deg heat. and riding the 17 hrs to Mt Isa ..

STroppy this was never intended on being a sightseeing tour, my focus and motivation was always to go on a 'long ride', do the Border Run and turn left on the way home and ride to Darwin,, then ride home. Just as I said a long ride,,
Maybe next year I could join you and it would be a better trip to go sightseeing when there is company to share it with, as opposed to solo riding, :grin

laST night I said my farewells and Wendy lead us out of Darwin, she wanted to make sure we left, 11.30pm I followed my wonderful hoST to Noonamah where I re focused the new floodlights then rode off into the night. I STopped at Adelaide river and changed my gloves to Zarkie's and put my Zarkie liner under my OzSTOC jacket as the night was cool with the wind factor. About 3am I was so glad I did. About 4.30 am I stopped in a truck bay and STripped off my riding jeans :butt and put my pants liner on as I was getting cold and it was making me tired.I also STopped again and had a power nap 20 mins STill plugged in and warm.. juST before dawn..
I was juST motoring along at 120kph til it was daylight. I think the natives have eaten all the wildlife. :fp, with great lighting and made Katherine about 2.30 and re fueled, then again at Hiway Inn, Day waters and had coffee & meds. it was daylight now thank god.. My next STop was 3ways where I had a toasted bacon & egg sanga and more coffee and walked around a bit to relieve my sore numb butt. I STopped about 30k's along the Barkly hwy to STrip out of the Zarkie gear & Next STop for fuel was Barkly HomeSTead, to top up the tank and enjoy the laST of NT's speed limits. :spank :law :eek :thumb I also passed a :13Candy 2up about 80k's from the NT end at 12.10pm NT time..
We left NT and into Qld and again fuelled up at Camooweal for the laST leg onto Mt Isa. I noticed the fuel laSTs longer in Qld :grin and it takes longer to get to the next town, funny that. :well
Tomorrow is another 1200 ish day to Cape Hillsborough Mackay.. then 3 days rest. I need it. I'm buggered and off to sleep now.. :Blow

STranger has carried me far and wide across, up and down this vaST land and delivered me home. He has to wait to be put in his shed with STrangler, because I'm to Farkled to put the side STand up or move the Volvo out of the way.. so he will sit out front til I wake up later.
Ride Report will be written when I can think .. the laST night was the hardest night of all.

Well Done Johnny :runyay ,
I have enjoyed following your SPOT.
I am jealous and would like to do a full round of the paddock myself but will have to wait till retirement as I would like the slower and more leisurely pace of perhaps around 40 days. But that would require some serious coin.
:hatwave Welcome back again buddy, time to enjoy some long sleep ins before your next adventure.
-
:thumbsup. Well done.
