Title: Gumtree Ad for ST1100
Post by: Newby on August 24, 2017, 07:20:15 PM
While cruising Gumtree I came across the following advertisement:

https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/lockyer-valley/farming-equipment/farm-equipment-miscellaneous-clean-up-sale/1157413081 (https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/lockyer-valley/farming-equipment/farm-equipment-miscellaneous-clean-up-sale/1157413081)

The bike has not been ridden for 6 or 7 years and it is not under cover, so it would presumably take quite a bit to get it up and going but the at price the seller is asking (two/a few hundred) it is well worth looking at. He said it only had 9000 odd km on it but from the picture, he may be assuming that the last digit on the odometer is a tenth of a km. Regardless it would suggest it may have done in the 90's. I was sorely tempted to buy it however, I could not in good conscience buy it for the few bits of fairing I would like when there may be someone who could do the bike justice by restoring it for the road or using more of the bike for parts than me.

As to the bike and its condition just looking at the photo in the ad and a couple of others he sent me, it is an ABS civilian model which has scrapes down the LHS fairings (missing the fairing section over the battery and the insert in the lower LHS fairing). It would also need an ignition switch. I would think that it is well worth looking at for anyone living in the Brisbane/Toowoomba region. He is not a motorcyclist so is not able to provide any real detail.

From what the seller (Owen) said he could provide detail to prove provenance/allow a REVS check.

I may call him back in a week or so and if it has not gone by that time I may weaken and give it a roof myself :)

Regards,

Kevin (Newby)

Its also missing the handle bar shroud..

As it has been sitting for years, it will need all new hoses, a battery obviously, tyres, fluids.

I think with out seeing it, that would be ok as a parts bike.

Coupla hundred max!  It's not worth restoring if you were wanting a bike to put away as an investment when they become rare (in 50 years).  For $1500 you could get one in good condition that would be easy to restore.
As Brock says, strictly for spares, and then all the exposed ones are badly weathered (switch blocks, for example).  Only worth storing if you have excess shed space.  One day the engine, drive train and rims will be useful to someone.

You're a hard man Biggles! I did say restore it for the road. There are few motorcycles worthy of a full restoration in my opinion and the ST is not one of them. If I bought a $1500 ST (especially if it was an ABS model), the next bike I would buy is this one, for the non perishable parts :) The RHS plastics alone appear to be worth the $200. Would definitely need to be close to East Haldon and have a look at it of course.

Just talked with Owen regarding the st barn find (sort of ) . Insists it has 9000 km on the clock. Check the photo of the left side exhaust you'll notice the black paint missing where the riders boot heel rubs. As most of you know it takes a lot more Kay's than 9000 to do that. For sure 90 thousand or more.   Regards Trevor.

G'day Trevor,

I may be going down that way in a week or two. I have decided against buying it but if it is still there when I head down to Killarney, I think I will feel compelled to give it a home :) I just cant stand the thought of it wasting away and doing nobody any good. The real problem is that ST's are so bloody reliable you rarely have to replace any thing but consumables unless you have a stack!

The ST photo on Gumtree suggested it was an 1100A (position of indictor tell tale lights on gauge cluster) and the image you put up confirms it.

It's a 95 1100A (ABS-TCS only) which was the first year we got the ABS model before it was updated in 1996.
