Title: Nabiac. NMM visit
Post by: ppopeye on November 01, 2017, 08:15:06 AM
Not quite a mc ride report but reporting it anyway.

Heading off from Elizabeth Beach to the National Motorcycle Museum at Nabiac today. Should be interesting.

Last to leave Wooli but I think Big Ted will take longer to get home

I think BigTed was planning on stopping to check out the museum but don't think he did.

I agree, a fantastic collection. Just managed to get in before closing time on our way back from Wooli, mainly to pay our respects to John Nagel’s (Saaz) memory.

It was good. Got around in a bit less than 2days. Just I found a lot of bikes I had heard of in the past but never seen. Eg An Ariel square four.
I did think it would be good to have a story on Saaz's bike so others visiting could know why it was there?

VicPol had them in the 60's, would have you would have seen 'em when you were on-the-job in those days.

I also called in on the way home from Wooli and had exactly the same thought about a write up to go with Johns bike.
I found the museum over crowed. Lots of interesting bikes but hard to get a good look at them.

Remember a Square 4 often being in the car park at the University of NSW in the early 70's

SA Police had the square fours in the old days as well. That was prior to having the BSA 650's that were still in service when I joined.    An old mechanic that worked on them told me that the Arials were just rubbish.   On a fast run the rear two cylinder would overheat and seize, stopping the bike.   The local rascals, including my wife's uncle, new it.  They would induce a chase with a high speed pass, sit at speed until the police bike stopped, and then do a "U" turn and go back to give the coppers some stick on the way past.

That must have been before they could book you via the post using just your rego number.
These days in Queensland there is a "no pursuit" policy- they call ahead for others to lay down tyre rippers to stop the vehicle.
Works sometimes.
