Title: STranglers Northern Adventure to Atherton
Post by: johnnyYTED on November 23, 2017, 01:00:25 PM
 :blk13  :dred11
I am heading off on Sunday 26th November on a ride to Atherton to pick up a camper trailer from Me-3 Ben.
I have to do this trip up and back to be home again on the 3rd Dec as I am having a Bone marrow biopsy 9am, anal/bowel cancer screening test 1pm, followed by an MRI at 4pm all at Liverpool Hospital on the Monday 4th Dec.
I plan on riding from Picton, home, to Injune 1,188k's on Sunday followed by Injune to Atherton on Monday 1,274k's. That will change if my body says  :eek 'STOP'!  :eek
The next day will be fitting a towbar to STrangler, doing the wiring with Ben's help, then testing it out towing the camper trailer a little, before turning round and heading home via Cape Hillsborough then head straight back to home stopping when I need and sleeping in the trailer.. a trip of 5414k's all up. My Bubbler spot a year on STrangler will be on  https://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=170835a0b6a26b44c2&hoursPast=0&showAll=yes   and here's my route via google maps.

Best of luck with the trip, and also with the battery of tests when you return.  I hope STrangler performs well for you and that you both enjoy the experience.

Steve.

Id love to see some pics of the camper trailer !  And also your experience with it on the way back.  Ruth was talking about getting one just the other night and I brushed it off by saying there is no such thing that is light enough to be towed by a bike.  I'm happy to be proven wrong.

That shouldn't be hard given how many people on here have one.

Steve are you on the OzSTOC Facebook page? there are pics on Ben McGilvray's post of the trailer he is selling me also somewhere here on OzSTOC is a thread when he re furbished it. I towed a smaller trailer with STranger my ST1100, but he is getting retired at the end of December. Its why I'm getting the 1300 towbar fitted to STrangler.

Yeah, pics or it didn't happen.

I'm happy to be proven wrong.

I've towed the Elite camper to and from SEQ, Mildura and around Tasmania, as well as many shorter trips in Victoria.  All up, around 20,000km.  Before that the Mighty CB1300 towed the Classic trailer on similar trips, all up around 40,000km.

Whether a trailer is right or wrong is up to the rider.  In my case the trailer is right for us.  Mrs W and I love the queen size bed, space for all of the necessary gear and supplies for three nights in the bush, both trailers towed effortlessly and safely.

The Elite camper:

My 2 cents - forget the Gillies on the return trip towing a new trailer. Take the Palmerston Highway instead.
I was born in Atherton and went to primary school in Malanda.
I'd love to come with you but I have Alice minding duties.
Have a good trip and good luck with the tests.

Sage advice for someone towing a new trailer on a new bike.

Palmerston is still fun enough.

Heck all the 4 range roads are fun.

Sorry Diesel Gillies can wait til I go back after Mackay NatRally'
Lionel I picked Palmerston as its got me headed south and as I need to be back sooner rather than later. I'm not overly concerned about towing a new trailer, but will be cautious with it till I forget its there. I'll have to insure it ASAP just in case. I do want to enjoy it when I can get away without time constraints.

Johnny appears to arrived at Emerald around 21:35, having ridden a tad over 1100 Km for today.
O'night temp expected to drop to 18/21, with max tomorrow of 36 degrees.

A block to the east of position shown is the BP servo where I turned north for Townsville, 6 years ago, and my GPS stated :
"Take first exit at next roundabout, 605 KM!"

Hey Johnny, right through my old stamping ground (lived in Mackay, worked out near Moranbah/Collinsville/Middlemount/Emerald).  Nice out at Cape Hillborough in't it.  Hope you got as cuppa at the Old Station cafe, used to love having one of their pizzas sitting out under the trees.

Don't know which way you're heading down, but turn right on to Hwy 5 just south of Kuttabul, across through Marion to Hwy 70, out west to just passed Nebo and then south for as long as you want to on Hwy 67 to Dingo, about 80 km inland from Rocky, is a good ride with slightly higher average speeds.  But up to you if you're towing a trailer.  After riding around the district I found Canelands Mall at Mackay a great place to get a smoothie and sit in the airconditioning.

Right, never went further than Dingo on the inland route, but you can do A4/A3 through Biloela from Dingo.  Only time I went any distance south I took the coast road.

Ride safe, and look out for overfed eagles out there.  I found them disconcerting as they tried to fly up from a roo carcase on the road when a motorbike approached, and only managed to reach chest height right in front of you.

Steve I did go north from the Leap and left to Marion onto Nebo then left down to Middlemount Dingo and have set up camp on the corner of the Liechkardt /capricorn Hwys near Westwood.

That explains it- I was suggesting the batteries had gone flat in the SPOT.

Wham Bam! Lightning strike! Lost power for 20 mins. Now have to reset all clocks.
Been very light shower flurries here overnight, but not enough to register on guage.

Spot has not updated in past 2 and a half hours? Last update said battery at 89%
Maybe poor support area, or sats are on strike. Or maybe sheltered up against rain?

Constant thunder here at home and raining steadily. 9mm in past 24 hours.
Cats are forlornly staring out the windows.

I wonder why he went up the Cracow road then turned back?  When I went there in April 2011 about where he stopped it turned to gravel, but I've ridden it since and it's sealed all the way now.  When I first travelled the road in 1949 it was very ordinary all the way to Mundubbera where my Mum had to go for me to make my grand entrance on an unsuspecting world.     :grin

Or he missed the left turn for Gayndah...   It's straight ahead to Cracow when travelling south.

The device is Bubbler, not Spot, which might explain the lack of updates when out of mobile coverage.

In 1949 I was just a twinkle in my Dads eye and I'm a lot older than Diesel
Did they have cars then or was it with a horse and buggy  :grin

I have had hassles with the phone and broke the screen so spot didn't follow me down the New England Hwy, I stopped for a chat and coffee at Guyra then headed on to Moonbi Range where the skies open and pelted me with torrential rains all the way in tamworth. I then stopped in to catch up with a friend Maryanne and enjoy her hospitality for the night. Tomorrow I hit the Putty Rd and be home 4 hrs later ending Stranglers Northern Adventure.
