Title: Tassie Tour
Post by: NavGirl20 on January 12, 2018, 09:05:18 AM
We excitedly sailed across Bass Strait on Tuesday night with the OzStoc shop in tow.  :hatwave The crossing was a little bumpy but docking in Devonport on Wednesday morning we were greeted with sunshine and clear blue skies. We disembarked and headed for our first stop catching up with a tall, red headed fellow ST rider were we chatted all morning. After setting up Peter unloaded the bike we were off for a ride through Deloraine lead by our tour guide.   :13Candy :runyay
After a very pleasant evening plans were made for a ride the following day and we had had a fantastic start to our Tassie adventures  ++

This place is motorcycle Mecca. Peter and I are absolutely loving the chance to ride some of Tassies awesome roads. From our base in Westbury we’ve done a number of different loops crisscrossing the Meander Valley and Tamar Valley. One extra had an excellent ride yesterday , from Hobart up the East Coast to Swansea , from there over Elephant Pass to St Mary’s , then out though the Fingal valley to the Midlands Hwy , down to Campbell town and then back home , approx 430 kms for the day , may go for another ride tomorrow.

We have had a huge weekend of bike riding.  We met Streak in Launceston on Friday afternoon.  Saturday morning we made a relatively early start with Diesel, Streak and a few local riders and did a 300 km ride through  Central Highlands, Sheffield, Beaconsfield, Exeter and returning to Westbury.

Sunday morning it was on the road again into Launceston to meet up with some locals who led a wonderful ride to Scottsdale then through Weldborough Pass to St Helens and then to Falmouth right on the coastline for lunch. It was great to see some familiar faces and make some new friendships. It was then back on the bikes through Elephant Pass and back to Westbury. All up around 400kms for the day.
We have been in Tasmania for 12 nights and have done 1500kms on the bike over great twisty roads and through spectacular countryside. Loving it.

On Monday we bid farewell to Diesel (only temporarily) as we will catch up again before we leave the island. A huge thank you to Diesel and Mrs Diesel for their hospitality while in Westbury. We are now at the north coast seaside town of Wynyard. Within about 100km there is plenty to see and do. Today we found a beautiful little secluded spot at Boat Harbour Beach with crystal clear water and white sand. We journeyed a little further checking out Sisters beach, Latta Port and then to Stanley. Only way to describe it is breathtaking, spectacular views, historic buildings, Hersey’s seafood and the imposing Nut. While on the Tassie West Coast a cruise up Arthur River on the red boat is a must do. Rob, our guide was a wealth of knowledge about the river and surrounding areas and a typical bush bloke to boot.
I also tried one of these today. A scallop pie!!!  Only in Tasmania would they put scallops in a pie. This past week we have explored further around the West Coast areas of Zeehan, Queenstown and Strahan. Did a cruise along Gordon River through Hells Gate to Cape Sorrel and then to Sara Is. Amazingly the 150 year old ship slips and convict ruins are still visible and it’s difficult to imagine the hardships those people faced. Similarly with the early Piners who sort the Huon Pine in rugged harsh country. Says a lot for their perseverance and tenacity to struggle on. Yes we have had great weather a few cool nights in the middle of this week. A very comfortable 20 degrees today on the bike up through Cradle Mt to Hampshire, Penguin and back through to Forth and the Sheffield. Great ride with some tight twisties at the beginning then opening up to wide sweeping corners through Cradle Valley and more twisties on the home run.

We’ve moved south from Sheffield and are now at Oatlands for a few days. Loads of history at Campbell Town with the 1838 Red Bridge. Also fascinating were the pavers inscribed with convict name, Ship, date of arrival and their sentence. Oatlands is also rich in history. After exploring the Flour Mill, dry stone walls and historic buildings I saw PC etched into the stonework. This must have been in his previous life, and I thought I knew him. Great weekend again. Mt Wellington on Saturday and around parts of Hobart to get out bearings. The views from Mt Wellington were spectacular. Went to the Trout and Salmon hatchery today and saw albino rainbow trout - Good coffee and pancakes there.  We are currently staying at New Norfolk for the week and touring around from there. Staying is Geeveston for a few days this week. Visited Tahune Forest Air Walk yesterday. Today’s drive saw us head south to Cockle Creek, the most southerly point accessible by road where the water was glorious. Hastings Caves were spectacular, one of the best Caves we been in. We then headed to Southport for a look and if course a beer at Southern Tavern, the most southerly pub in Tassie. These guys make riding these bikes look easy. I don’t think Peter is going to trade the ST any time soon.  The Morris 1000 panel van was get like one of Peter’s he had back in the day. Brought back a few memories. There was a bit of everything from period costumes, classic cars in beautiful condition to early steam and diesel engines. Trip to Strathgordon #2. We had ridden out to Strathgordon about 2 weeks ago and the heavens opened and we turned around about 30kms short so we were still keen to see this amazing engineering achievement. Having woken to beautiful weather this morning we headed to Gordon Dam at Strathgordon and it did not disappoint. Built in 1974 it is an amazing structure with its double curvature concrete wall which extends 140 m tall. Walking down to the wall was a little scary but it’s stood for the past 44 years and I convinced myself it would remain standing while we walked out over the wall. Following the descent and ascent of all 193 steps it was time for lunch at Lake Pedders Lodge. Enjoying the ride report and the pics, brings back memories and the Tassie Urge.

Did the Pennicott Wilderness Tour on Bruny Island which was our Chrissy present from our children. It was wonderful. Boarded the boat at Adventure Bay all decked out in their waterproof burka ( real fashion statement), and sailed south to Friar Rocks which is home of the Australian fur seals.  We saw majestic cliffs, amazing sea caves and crystal clear waters of the Great Southern Ocean. That's a goodly lot of seals posing for you.  I've seen a lot fewer there.  Looks like you got a nice calm day- not to be taken for granted.  When we went out the guy was handing out sea-sick tablets during the briefing.  He said, "They're free now, but when we're out at sea, they're $40 each!"  I reckon you'd be happy to pay it  'cos it was a real stomach churning ride.

Yes same deal with seasick tablets but $100 each once at sea.
Peter’s feeling chuffed with himself. Had the ST on the beach at Cloudy Bay this morning. It’s been an amazing couple of weeks as we’ve made our way up the East Coast. Did the cruise to Maria Island where we saw spectacular scenery, sea caves and pristine beaches. Even went to the motorcycle museum in Bicheno. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180323/bbf1977c4075dfc153263f840b79747e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180323/bdb492aab25273d8d80b3dc0fd938aa8.jpg)Last weekend we battened down in heavy rain against the wind at St Mary’s. With wind recorded at 60-70kph gusting at times to 120 it was rather scary at night with the caravan rocking and rolling.
With some sunshine early Saturday we ventured to Coles Bay, Wineglass Bay and Bay of Fires before the weather turned wet and cold. At Launceston this week and more bike riding to Bridport and Scottsdale. Friday footy in Tassie. No idea about AFL but some entertainment none the less. View is from Braddens lookout looking towards Forth. Only 2 nights left and we’re heading back to the big island. Going to unload ST and ride GOR. Thinking of heading to Colac but not sure just yet will decide when we get there. The adventures continue back in Victoria. Been on the ride for last 2 days and ticked off another bucket list must do. The GOR did not disappoint. Excellent weather a little cool at just 14 degrees but fine. Rode Winchelsea to Lorne, Torquay and return yesterday and headed to Port Campbell today. Multitasking today. Had the ST and caravan on Bathurst track at the same time. Unfortunately we couldn’t stop and get a photo of ute and van. Part of the track was closed as believe it not the World downhill Skateboard championships were being held with riders clicking top speeds of 110kms down Conrad Straight.
We are now in Mudgee for a couple of nights. If any of the Mudgee members are about we’d love to catch up with you.
