In the final planning stages of a trip from perth to Canberra. Any suggestions on training and preparation for an IBA 1600km ride during my trip. Recently completed a couple of 1000km rides.

What sort of time frame are you looking at?
-
Planning to leave Perth at midnight ride to mandurah and back initially so the 1600km distance will see me in eucla before dark on the 2/3/18

Good luck, safe travels and stay upright .........

From your blog, I see you will be travelling from Adelaide to West Gippsland. Unless you give Melbourne a wide berth, you will most likely be travelling through or around the suburbs. That being the case, you'll likely be within a few km of at least a few Forum regulars. Let us know if you need break from the ST and something more comfortable than a swag for a night.
And then West and Central Gippsland. That may take you near the RTE venue at Glengarry. http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=12419.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=12419.0)
The dates won't align, but I thought you might like to know.
The next RTE is at Dunolly. http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=12457.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=12457.0) - again the dates probably won't align, but if they do .......

If you haven't already, look at investing in a Spot ( or Bubbler App for android, or the Apple equivalent) and setting up a Spotwalla account. Then put up the link here (and on Facebook) so we can keep an eye on your progress for safety.
The added bonus is (I think) you can submit spotwalla data as evidence with your trip.
Carry plenty of water and hydrolytes and alternate between one and the other.

Take it easy with hydrating aditives, I have seen a pushbike rider on that stuff that had to pullup due to severe stomach cramps. It took several hours drinking plain water before he recovered..

There's some very good tips and ideas here..... http://ironbutt.com/aow.cfm (http://ironbutt.com/aow.cfm)
You also might think about a cooling vest if the weather is very hot. I have one of these and it's great for keeping you cool in the very hot weather, and if it's cold, it can be worn as a vest to keep you warm. http://www.coolweave.com.au/MCV.htm (http://www.coolweave.com.au/MCV.htm)

I note your intention for a 1600 km ride. I would suggest Norseman to Port Augusta with a distance of 1669kms; essentially a straight line.
Advise caution if you plan to do much night riding between Norseman and Ceduna other than it's an easy ride over. Some of the roadhouses run 24/7 to cater for the trucks with most running overnight to avoid the terrorists (tourists).
-
If you are intending to have your ride certified, I would suggest you follow to the letter, these guidelines.
http://www.ironbutt.com/themerides/ssseries/ (http://www.ironbutt.com/themerides/ssseries/)
Remember, if you didn't get it certified, you can't claim to have completed a SS1600.
It looks like you will be moving through different time zones. Don't let them mess with your head. Be careful and work out a stage by stage (fill to fill) route and include the zone changes so that you can be certain of your correct time. This also needs to be documented if you are getting certified.

Thanks for that...will keep in contact. Unfortunatly Dunolly RTE date will not work this time. I should have planned better

Thanks Lyndsay for the details you provided. See from the paperwork that you need to witnesses at either end??

No, just wet it and it cools by evaporation, lasting at least an hour and a half before needing a re-soak.

Where did you get it Pete?

Problem with this Alan is that there will be probably 5 to 6 hours in the dark in bad wildlife country.
The Mandurah/Ecula option by leaving at midnight the early (dark hours) would be in far less wildlife prone areas.

Give me a call when you are in Adelaide and perhaps we can hook up for a coffee and chat etc. I've PM'd you my phone number etc. :thumb

Have a fantastic trip :hatwave

The revised plan is Perth to Nullabor which is just over 1600km. will be on the road by midnight so night riding in the early hours of Friday 2/3/18.
will be using spot tracker to monitor my progress.
hope to be at Nullabor around 5pm.

have a gQQd trip, it lQQks like your well planned & organised. STay hydrated is the beST advice I can give.
In your Sena Cam teST video I think you could aim the camera up juST a little as moST of the fQQtage was lQQking down at your dash.. but you probably noticed that :grin
STroppy and I leave for our Tasmania 21 day tour both towing our trailers on 4 march but have done a lot less planning the details. We're winging it mostly :grin

You'll need to stop for a receipt (does not need to be for fuel) at least every 600 kms. I got caught out once when a servo was not open. I was able to get to the next servo about 100 kms further on but the IBA ride was blown.
On another IBA attempt my fuel receipts flew out of a side pocket. I now photograph each receipt as I get it.
Check each receipt's date/time for accuracy. Some servo's don't adjust for daylight saving. It's probably not such a big deal on a SS1600.
On one of my more strenuous IBA rides, Port Augusta to Darwin, 2723 kms in 24 hours, I arrived at my planned servo in Darwin with 15 minutes to spare and feeling very pleased with myself, until I noticed a problem with the receipt. I quickly found another servo just in time which saved the day.
I live in Canberra. How long are you planning on staying in Canberra?
-
Thanks for the heads up Lionel.
arriving Canberra 16/3/18 and going camping with my cousin who is a local. Heading to the snowy mountains for 4 days then starting my return to WA. First ever visit to Canberra so really looking forward to it.
cheers
