Title: Born again member from south coast NSW
Post by: Wayne'o on June 28, 2018, 01:11:09 PM
Not quite right headline there. I am an old member having previously owned an ST1300 and joined this group but became inactive after selling the bike because I just couldn't handle the heat issue.
I have had a couple of other bikes since selling the 13 and always fancied that one day I would get around to buying an ST1100. I did ride on one about 10 yrs ago at a dealer in Melbourne and thought at the time that it was the best bike I had ever ridden (I have had lots) but at the time it was out of my budget.
So moving up to now, after a 6 hour train trip, I picked up a 2000 ST1100 ABS/TCN with 95,000ks from Brisan Motorcycles in Newcastle, 2 days ago. After picking it up, I rode to Singleton to stay overnight there and do the Putty Road which I have never done but heard lots about. This was yesterday and if my photo has uploaded, this was me at my coffee stop at the Gum Leaf cafe (1/2 way?). Loved the road, I am Victorian and this road seemed like a combination of many great roads I had ridden down there. Loved every minute of it and got home with 7 litres of fuel still remaining. Thats 471ks from Newcastle to Culburra Beach, via Singleton. I am absolutely ecstatic over that. My bike, as pictured, is basically very clean but needs a new screen to start with and I will be going through a long list of things to check over the next week or two. The bike is brilliant and quite a bit sportier than I last remembered but then again I am 67 and starting to get a few more aches and pains.
Looking forward to joining you all on a ride or two over the next few months.
Thanks for reading and happy travels to you all.

Good catch.

If you don't have the owners manual I can give you a PDF link - it's says for a 96 or 1100T/1100A but from then on they're all the same.

Never ridden a 1300 yet though I have looked at a couple.

Welcome back.

Nice looking bike, the 2000 ST1100 is the pick of the bunch, owning one myself, as well as a new STable addition in a 2008 ST1300.

Enjoy the bike & the site.

Welcome Wayne'o from sunny Brisbane.  That's a gorgeous looking '11 you've got there.  I do love red even though I ride white.

Strewth!  28 bikes- you're not exaggerating when you say you've owned a few!
Great economy you're getting out of the ST11.  They're real touring bikes with those great tanks and low consumption.
Welcome back, and be sure to keep posting.

Welcome back Wayne. You certainly picked a great ride home to get to know the bike. We may catch up on a RTE one day.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words.

It feels good to be back. Whilst I am not generally one for riding in groups, preferring to be alone, this time
around though, I am looking to join you all on some rides.

Also, I got my bike count wrong, I quoted 28 but forgot one of my favourites, my Burgman 650. Absolutely loved it
and would have kept it if it had longer travelling suspension for those country trips. The longest I owned any bike was
my first (Honda CB360) which I ground my motorcycling teeth on, and the shortest was a BMW R100RT which I sold after
7 days of ownership and actually made money on it, so all's well that end's well.

Hoping to see you very soon and thanks again.

happy travels to you all.

Lots of people hang onto BMW R100s for years.  Why didn't you like it?
The Burgman is a great scooter.  As you say, pity its suspension is really meant for smooth roads.
Riding with OZSTOCers is different to most groups.  There's something about the attitude of ST owners that affects many behaviours, including their group riding style.

Hi Biggles, I hated the gearbox on the R100. It clunked loudly on the way up and graunched on the way down. I tried different styles of changing gears but just couldn't live with it. It did these things when I first rode it and figured it was just me and that I would adjust and get over it but I learned very quickly that it was something that was going to give me the gripes so I off loaded it. I had other mates who had them and none had the problems I was experiencing. I made a profit on it anyway and moved on. I looked very hard and close at buying an R1100RT/R1150RT instead of the ST1100 but was too scared of buying something that I didn't know a great deal about and I'd heard horrendous stories of ABS units failing on these which cost $4K to fix. I have a friend with a BMW GS1150 and whilst he loves it, he is continually canabalising 2 other bikes for parts to keep it on the road. That is not my idea of fun. I want a bike that I can work on if I want to but need it to be reliable and rideable at anytime. So I went with the ST1100. I basically put more faith in Honda engineering that BMW. Most of the 9 Hondas that I have owned I have loved but only 1 of the 4 BMWs.  Interestingly of the 6 Suzukis that I have owned, 3 of them are at the top of the list of 30 bikes that I have owned. Something about Suzukis IMO. Wish they made a faired/shaft tourer.

I do ramble on and get into trouble for it from the Mrs.

cheers and happy travels

I'm glad you rambled on- it was very instructive.  I agree with you about both Hondas and Suzukis. I have a V-Strom and quite like it, however it is essentially a naked bike and therefore limited for touring or inclement weather.

Hi Wayne'o
Nice bike! I'll keep an eye out for you. I ride a green 1100 and live at Bangalee just outside Nowra so chances are we'll cross paths on a daily ride or a RTE. I've owned a dozen or so bikes over the years and like you my shortest ownership was a R100RT. Same issue except my gearbox threw in the towel on a trip to Phillip Is. To be fair, it had already done around 120,000 km when I bought it!

Hi Wayne'O. I think you may suffer from 'bike fetish syndrome'. Wow. That is some score. I thought I would end up with a BMW R1150RT when looking for a tourer but after chatting to a member of the Qld Police, many years ago when they had the 1200 in service, I decided to give them a wide berth. I am coming up to 11 years of owning the ST1300, and I can say without hesitation, it is the best bike I have ever owned. I have owned a good number of bikes since the mid '70's, and all have been Japanese except for one Ducati, which was the worst bike I have ever owned, in terms of reliability anyway. Love a 90 degree V twin, so my second favourite bike was my Suzuki TLR1000. I just got too old for the weight on the wrists.  :fp
