Post by: Streak on April 20, 2012, 10:48:54 PM
Hi All,
Well after our trip, one thing has come our of it, Teela wants to get her license......and well we need a bike to learn on, she has ridden before, but quite some time ago.

I don't have much of a budget $3,000 to buy a little learner for her, I have been looking at the Honda CB400 or the Suzuki GS500 maybe.

Thoughts and options about what I should be hunting around for? Taking not account Teela is not very tall

Interesting though here is a link to Qld learner approved bikes:

Mate, having had one of my friends do this exact process over the last couple of weeks, I know the questions you are asking. He looked at a VT 400 and loved it. He could have got a VT 250 second-hand for about $3,000 but eventually bought a brand new VT 400 for $10,000 on road. His argument was that if he had bought the cheaper VT 250 he would have had to sell it at the end of the 12 month learning period and buy a bigger, more expensive bike then, so he might as well get the bigger bike now and simply keep it. Also he wants to take his lady friend on the back but can't till the end of the 2 months, so he's simply getting prepared.

Assuming that Teela won't want to stay on a LAMS bike for any longer than necessary I suppose the best advice would be to get the cheapest LAMS machine you can, and spend the next 12 months saving for what she REALLY wants. There are loads of LAMS bikes at dealers, simply because people trade them in after 12 months, but they do seem to move out of the dealers very quickly, so keep trawling the dealers and snap up the first half-way decent machine you find knowing that you won't have it for long anyway.

Cheers

Having gone through that only 2 years ago.

I had a Virago 250.

These are the bees knees for learning. Very easy and light to move about.

I think you can pick them up pretty cheap.

I learnt on the vt400. It would suit her with low seat height and very comfy. Just shop around till you find one that fits your budget

All good advise above Streak.
The most important question to ask is, "What does Teela want" in terms of cruiser style or naked, sport etc. Make sure she does some solid test rides and feels comfortable and confident on her initial choice. If not, try a different style. Everyone is different.
A neighbour of mine just bought a cruiser, first bike in over 10 years, and sold it a week later because she didn't feel confident on it in terms of control. She now has a CB 400 and is enjoying it like a pig in mud. She said she feels more confident sitting 'on' it rather than the feel of sitting 'in' a cruiser. An older ZZR is a top little bike as well. The main thing is not to make a rushed decision.

Cheers.

Well after discussion with Teela, and attempting to explain "first bike, less plastic"

She oringally owned 1994 Kawasaki ZZR 250 a few years ago, so she loves her plastic  :hatwave

I would like to find her some thing a little more upright ride position though, I think with her back better riding position is important

One of those hyosung thingo's.
think they come with a choice of chips.
For the old low power limit they put one in ECU in then, when people had graduated to a higher licence the original 650 chip went in.
For a lower CB400 there is a guy advertising lowering services in Roadrider.
Guy at Browns Plains shooping centre puts platform soles on bike boots.

Why don't you try and sneak another day away from the graft and speed into Springwood in Bris.
Moss St has most of the makes on sale and heaps of s/hand so a quick "fit" check can be done to narrow down the choices.
Remember the choice is now of bikes up to 650 depending on horsepower and don't forget to check out the 400cc and 500cc scooters.
Autobox, handle well and hunt along. And have heaps of "plastic" and space for the girlie bags.

Only advise I'd give is DON'T get a 250 of any kind. You live in Toowoomba, so unless Teela intends to potter around town, any ride you and Teela go on is going to get you out on a highway or on a 100kph back road to somewhere.

Brendan had the ZZ-R250 and found that on the highway they are hard work like all 250's are. If your idea of fun is doing 7,500 rpm at a 100kph then go for a 250. But if not, do NOT consider any bike under 400cc. Brendan sold his ZZR this week and Laurie is checking out a Hyosung GSV650 cruiser for him that's for sale in Lismore literally as I type this message.

Marissa's CB400 Super four is IMHO about as good as a learners bike can get. It feels solid on the road without being heavy. It handles exceptionally well and is simple to ride. It goes like stink when you really get it angry. But Marissa's bike cost $6,500 so it's unlikely you'll find one for the budget you have to work with. The GS 500 would be a good alternative in my opinion, but as Beatup has suggested, hit Moss Street for a morning and sit on all of them.

Marissa and I were there on Saturday with Brendan. Marissa fell in love with a new Yamaha FZ6R, but has opted to hang onto the CB400 SF until she gets her open license so that she can then consider an unrestricted version of the same bike.

Don't get a 250. You WILL regret it shortly afterwards.

True that...I was constantly looking for an extra gear... The Virago sat beautifully on the road cruising at 80KPH, though...

Just resurrecting this conversation for some more thoughts on what I can put to Teela, she is adamant that she does not want anything without plastic, she originally owned a 250 ninja, so any suggestions what we can look at for a cheap learner bike that is a little more sporty? I want something a little bigger than a 250 though

The CB400 and the GS500 are both great bikes for a learner. They handle well and are very easy to ride as well as being bloody reliable.
There are also learner versions of a number of 650cc bikes on the market that are great for starters. The Hyosung GT650 has been around for a while and I wouldn't be surprised if there are a number of secondhand ones around for a good price on Bikesales. They're basically a copy of the SV650. I reckon you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a great bike that will suit Teela and your budget.

We bought a Yamaha Virago 250 for my wife to learn on. She's not very tall as well. This was the perfect bike for her to learn on. Has the gear ratio to be able to do highway work, 100k's no problem.

It's about giving the learner confidence. if you go to big too soon you can create problems for the learner. The Virago sold to another learner.
Pauline now has a Yamaha Vstar 650 and a Suzuki Boulevard C50T (800)

That would be my recommendation.

Thanks for the thoughts so far, i have raised the subject again and after some time on bike sales we have identifed the kind of bike she is keen on......

Suzuki GSX 250

Honda CBR600

Kawasaki ZZ-R600

she is really keen on the fully faired sporty style, all the above where on bike sales for under 3k, reliability is what i am looking for, i have succeeded in creating the understanding that this bike may get a few scratches and dings along the way, so we need to be a little practical.

thoughts?

Honda, obviously!!  But is their 600cc LAMS?
In reality, a 250cc has all the grunt a learner needs, and is very light to handle.
If she intends keeping the same bike after the L & P plates, then the LAMS 600 would be the go, as the 250s run out of steam in the hills and are frustrating when riding with bigger bikes.

I agree with Sabie here. A 650 LAMS will save changing bikes later on, but the size and weight can be intimidating for a learner at first. Most important thing is for Teela to  test, test and test again. Take your time choosing. She has to be the one to feel confident on the bike. We will all have our thoughts but ultimately Teela has to be the one to choose. I believe the 650 Hyosung is actually the same frame as the 250 so size may be an advantage, that is unless the 250 is larger than average. I'm not sure.
All the best with whatever you decide on Teela.
Cheers.

My suggestion would be to look for a bike with more low and midrange grunt, not a four cylinder 250 that only gets going from 9,000rpm. Those types are very tiring to ride and need lots of concentration to keep them reving. It all looks pretty, but hard to do. There are some good bikes in the 400-450cc range that are no bigger (or heavier) than a 250, but are easier to wobble along with until the rider gets more confidance, with smooth power delivery and forgiving handling. Make it easy and the new rider will like it, too hard and it will stay in the shed.

The Across is a good bike, a guy I used to ride with owned one and he liked it heaps, comfy and easy to ride :thumbsup (helmet storage where the fuel tank should be was strange though :eek)
The ZZR is another good bike, a bloke that was my flatmate had one and I rode that a few times :runyay I found it to be a very comfortable and easy bike to ride :thumbsup

On a side note, both these guys crashed the bikes within the first year of owning them :fp (they were new to motorcycling) and damaged the side fairings >:()

The guy with the Across had the faring repaired and Oggy Knobbs added,
The guy with the ZZR had fibreglass fairings made so if they were damaged he could fix it with a fibreglass repair kit.

Anyway both these bikes are very good and reliable :thumb
And as far as the Deauville, it’s like a mini ST :grin

I've got a Virago 250 which I learnt on and still ride. It is an excellent learners bike. Light enough to hold up, and pick up. It does not 'tear' away from you when learning to take off and is easly managed and controlled. I put a smaller rear sprocket on (6 teeth less) as I do some freeway riding and find it will cruse easly at 110+. Not too much plastic to damage and the blinkers are on rubber mounts and stay virtually undamaged should you lay down. I too had riden bikes many years ago and found it the ideal bike to renew my riding.

Just a side note, mine is up for saie for $3500.

Just found this on bike sales, what does everyone think of this as a learner bike for Teela?

Mechanically sound, very low km's, nearly brand new and learner approved.

"Test rides can be arranged (private property). The bike is in near perfect condition, every detail I can think of is perfect, tires, brakes, linkages, exhaust, foot levers.... Everything is 100% The bike is practically brand new. I go out and start it and ride it around privately time-to-time to keep the bike in good condition (change out the fuel monthly) a great buy!

The Catch (why it's so cheap):

This bike requires a VIV.
I bought this bike about 6 months ago as a repairable write-off. There was no damage to it, it had been submerged about half-way up in fresh water (No rust and according to Vic Roads 100% re-registerable). There is no structural damage to the bike. I keep meaning to put it on the road for myself, but I wont have the time to enjoy it so there is no point putting the money into it.

It has been dropped once in my shed and once when someone was trying to move it from my front lawn (they dropped it on the opposite side) so I had to put both front indicators back on (see photos), it will also need a new clutch lever as the tip of the lever was bent during the lawn incident.

The bike is flawless other than the minor cosmetic damage and the need for a VIV (which is basically because the previous owner wanted a bigger bike so he left it out in heavy rains in kielor last winter to get himself a a repairable write-off)."

I've not met Teela but if she is at all vertically challenged, she may struggle with the seat height. I'm told that the seat height is higher than the 650 that my son has. Other than that I would still be wary. A bike shop should give them more than that if it's as good as he says it is.

Hey Streak

I think first you need to find out what style of riding position Teela is comfortable with, Cruiser, Tourer, sports???

Slip down to the local bike shops and sit on the different types and styles. When Teela finds one she's comfy with then you know what style to go in search of.  A lot of Women go for the cruiser style.

If you buy a 250 she will quickly grow out of it. Maybe a 400??? Ish

Hi  Streak
I think Teela would grow out of the ZZR250 in the not too distant future.  Even if the funds stretched to the new 300cc Kawasaki (with ABS) she'd outgrow that also.  When most new riders are used to their 250's they want a bigger engine and a bike that's physically bigger.
The GS500 is a great bike for new riders.  Looks like and is a similar size to many other bikes, comfy, not too heavy and cheap to operate and service.  It's got a fairly basic engine (less potential expense) and I imagine a fairly even spread of power.  Most other bikes of similar capacity could be described as race replicas.

GS500 is a nice bike. Looks like a 'real' bike. Approach anyhting repairable writeoff with care.Perhaps just treat the ZZR as a year or so stepping stone until Teela works out what she likes.  Marissa has now gone for a VFR800 after having a few interim learner/probationary bikes

We have been  doing this mate  :thumb

She does not like cruisers at all, she used to have the ZZR 250 when she used to ride herself a few years ago (in the time before children), We have been around about with this one and we keep coming back to the ZZR, i think it has alot to do with confidence to, she is comfortable with it as she knows it, the Suzuki i saw was just a opportunity thing that i was curious about....

Teela is also very short, and she can touch the ground on the ZZR, me thinks that we will have a 250 for a bit, and she will want to upgrade....it is all about confidence...

One of my daughters has shown an keen interest in learning to ride and the bike that ticked all of the boxes was the Honda VTR250. There are a few around at good prices.

hmm does not seem that Givi makes a top box (small one) for it, she does not like the Ventura rack stuff either

She only reads the forum when I tell her there is something she would like to read or comment on, so I am pretty safe....

So next school of thought, I think it is going to cost me a packet to get it to Toowoomba, anyone else seen a 250 ZZR in Purple about for around the 2 to 2 and half range?

Why purple?????, the kawasaki red is great.

Great Bike though, my last 250 was a ZZR.

The only thing i noticed in the pics was clutch cable  is almost at max stretch.

Dont worry about the exhaust scratches.

Hey Streak

When I bought Mrs Sabie's Boulevard from Toowoomba we used a bike transport to ship it to Townsville.

From memory it was around $400 or $500. I was pleased with their service.

Why not give her the 1100 once you've taken delivery of your new 1300

Because she needs to get a bike license and learn to ride again....

And she wants:

Type of Bike: Kawasaki ZZR 250 (she owned one and is comfortable with it)
Colour: Purple

Hmmm this one looks more appealing....

Can you mount a top box to a zzr250? I would like to put something like the link below:

http://www.rjays.com.au/home/products/luggage-universal-top-box.html (http://www.rjays.com.au/home/products/luggage-universal-top-box.html)

So Teela can ride it to work, and lock the box so to speak...

I know Ventura do a rack, but would it be strong enough for the top box

http://www.ventura-bike.com/fitments.aspx?modelid=399 (http://www.ventura-bike.com/fitments.aspx?modelid=399)

Thoughts and ideas?

Well a big Thank you to Dale Mclean! He went and inspected the bike for me today, it came back with glowing reports! excellent condition, good brakes, he rode it around the block and everything seemed in good order.

So I rang and we haggled, and i have just deposited $1,900, and bought a 1993 Purple ZZR250!

So next Question, what do i need for transferring Rego from him to me, seeing i am in QLD, and he is NSW?

Second, Abe is going to give it a Full Service and once over for me and add a topbox that we have arranged and i need to get the bike from Dales place in Newcastle to Abes Place in Padstow, anyone have a trailer and able to do me a big favour, and help Teelas new bike travel to Abe?

Cheers

Streak

Caroline's first big ride on her L's and not having 'piloted' a bike in her life .... Was from Brissie to Valla Beach south of Coffs via Grafton and Nana Glen and return. She loved it....now prefers to recline in the comfort that is GOLDclass.

We put an Express envelope into an an Express post box on Sunday ASSUMING it would get to Bris city by Monday. We live in Narangba, 41.2 k from the city. It arrived timely, ON WEDNESDAY.

Whats the latest Streak on "Operation Purple"

Latest is:

Bike is paid for, waiting for funds to clear so Dale can pick it up for me, I have to somehow get it to Abes place from Dales place....still at a loss as to how we are going to do that

Abe is going to give it a full service for me, and put a top box on it for me..

Top box is organised, have to order the mounts to put it on.

Once bike is ready to go, going to transport it to wild roses house, transfer the rego, and then organise the surprise delivery of a purple bike for Teela!

Pretty sure you will have to get a QLD roadworthy regardless whether it is currently registered in NSW or not.
I bought my TLR in Newcastle back in '04 and it was a bit of a pain.

Thanks mate, really appreciate the offer  :thumb the bike is a surprise for Teela, she knows nothing about it yet.

Abe and I have hatched a plan to get the bike to him so he can give it a once over for me, and add the top box and rack, and a service so I can give it to her all smiko and ready to go!

Ok so I thought we would update Operation "SWLHS"

One purple bike is being picked up Monday afternoon to be stored at Dale Mcleans, Thursday it is being picked up by bike transport and being taken to Abe's place, to which he is going to give it a full service and a fine tooth comb going over. As we want to give Teela the bike A1 and ready to go!

Once that is completed it is going to be transported to Toowoomba to bike shop for road worthy and rego transfer, we are going to stash the bike at Wild Roses house until I can work out how I am going to deliver the Suprise to Teela....

We have ordered for the bike:

26L Givi Top Box and special bracket to fit the ZZR
Tinted Screen
Purple Bolts for Screen
Ram Mount and X bracket

I am also in the process of organizing riding lessons and a Q Ride for Teela as well!

we might just be getting organised lol!

Thank you everyone for the offers of help, this club never ceases to amaze me!

Hey Graham, we never needed to put new tyres on for the two years we had it....my suggestion for new riders sticky is best so soft compound and I can't stress the importance of tyre pressure enough. All the best for Teala and her new toy.

I actually bought the mount that goes in the for stem hole of the bike, but fitting it is a problem, it does not seem to fit, even though it is rated to go into a ZZR 250

I use one of these on my ST11 - you have to cut the rubber cone off at the right length and be sure to use the correct washer (several sizes supplied with it). Works well for me.

If anyone who has one didn't get the instructions (WHAT? - read the instructions!!!!), here is a link to them:

http://www.rammount.com/Portals/0/Skins/NationalProducts/pdf/ramb342uassemblyweb.pdf (http://www.rammount.com/Portals/0/Skins/NationalProducts/pdf/ramb342uassemblyweb.pdf)
 They are self explanatory.

Of course, the bike must have a hole in the nut that holds the top triple clamp to the steering stem. I have removed the plastic housing from my ST11 bars because I have 30mm risers plus BMW R100RT handlebars - higher and further back, and the housing wouldn't fit without severe re-modelling.

http://spotonmotorcycles.com.au/oe-content/uploads/2012/08/061998ZZR250-4.jpg (http://spotonmotorcycles.com.au/oe-content/uploads/2012/08/061998ZZR250-4.jpg)

This is supposed to be the picture from above, but it has inserted a link, not the pick - you'll know what I mean without inserting the pic again. I hope.

If this is the bike, then it won't fit without replacing the top yoke/ triple clamp nut. There are places that will sell replacement nuts that will do the job. Once you know the size, these people should be able to help out:

http://www.probolt-australia.com/aluminium/motorcycle-accessories.html?prodtype=516&thread_washer_dia=267 (http://www.probolt-australia.com/aluminium/motorcycle-accessories.html?prodtype=516&thread_washer_dia=267)

Anyone having trouble, I would encourage to follow the instructions step by step and follow the maxim "measure twice, cut once".

This is a uTube vid of the process:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that photo "Shiney" (one of the Dave's and Duncan gang) of the steering yoke. As can been seen and is noted by Bluey the Ram mounted purchase WILL NOT fit this configuration.  Also, the brake reservoir actually goes under the screen (close) when on full left lock.  Thanks all for the input but the Ram mount is on the bottom of the "to do list" at this stage.

Off the spend Streaks money on oil, coolant, brake fluid and anything purple to accessorize the "Sports Demon".

I will try and post this photo later today, BUT,  when I drained the oil out I noticed that in the rear of the viewing glass there is a rubber "o" ring half dislodged.  It does appear to be part of the rubber ring that holds the viewing glass into the casing, if so, is this normal??? .

Cheers for now.

I have seen those 'o' rings dislodged in the sight glass before, but if it is not leaking leave it alone as they can be a pain to replace and seal.

Teela would have to take to your dropped pie with a brush cutter to clear her canvas, seriously a bike shop with a clean coffee shop looking through glass to see your bike worked on has a appeal to many people, not quit as visceral as doing it yourself though.  :beer

Face painting is what I am after

Teela would have to take to your dropped pie with a brush cutter to clear her canvas, seriously a bike shop with a clean coffee shop looking through glass to see your bike worked on has a appeal to many people,

So when's the Grand Opening with Jumping Castle and Free Baloon rides

It's gunna be a hell of an OzSTOC Bike Shop to be able to employ us all........   :p

Thank-you Brian,
I personally would like to thank you for all your efforts.

Many people would not know about all the effort you went too, ie  sending chapters of the manual and failing (internet stuff) and trying again with a different approach, which would have amounted to to several hours of frustrating work.

Your big effort did make my little involvement a lot easier, and I thank you for that.

Cheers
Dave

Well , had Tony (Sicman), rock up last night at about 10.30pm. He had left home after work at about 5pm and travelled to my place with bike trailer attached. Caught up and had a couple of Kilkennys. 'twas good to see the lad again. Up at 7am this morning and rocked over to Abe's place to pick up the machine in question. Was good to meet Abe and I must say, he has done an outstanding job on the little ST, it looks immaculate. He also came good with a cuppa and we had a good chat. A very interesting chap with a sterling pedigree. Anyway, got the beast loaded and we all said farewell, Tony heading to Guyra, me heading home and Abe off to earn a quid.

A rewarding and productive day. The story continues......... :thumbsup

Well the bike here! Tony, ST2UP & Jean arrived safe and sound with the precious cargo on board, we have dropped it off at the bike shop for a New type and a Road Worthy, Willd Rose (Leo) even came along for a look as he will be looking after the bike until "Delivery"

we also made a nice discovery that the motorcycle instructor who does the lessons also owns an ST1100! so bonus!

then we went to the Southern Hotel for lunch, where we where all fed and watered nicely!

My brother in law said the same thing..... :well

But this has been researched and investigated by 4 people inside the circle of friends, I wanted to be 100% sure before any money was spend and effort taken  :thumb

The only thing I have not been able to work out is how to get her to go and get her Learners before she gets the bike...

Well I got home at 1730 today after a 2400km round trip to deliver a surprise package which will hopefully make someones dream come true.
I had a ball catching with with some old mates Abe, Neale, Streak, ST2UP and Pockey and met Wildrose at the drop off luncheon.
I must thank Pitstop who was most happy to release me for four days for this project. Although I am not sure why, but it must be her love and understanding of my needs  :thumb :grin :crackup :rofl

This project has brought a lot of joy to a host of people as you will see in the photos I took along the way.

We were Blessed Abe - It was sunny without a cloud in the sky from your place to Guyra. The bike didnt get one drop of dust or rain on it :rockon Naturally the next morning when we crossed the QLD border towards Toowoomba it was overcast and started to spit rain, but only after the bike had been unloaded and lunch was underway :wink1 :rofl

Well just an update...

Leo and I went to register the bike (had to change to qld rego), and we both had a moment and realized we had driven there, all good to go, but we could not register it as we forgot the proof of purchase to take to the dept of transport  :|||| so we got a nice drive around toowoomba, had a coffee and we went home with no bike  :rofl

So we are going to go around again on Tuesday.....  :thumb

The guys in bike shops amaze me.  They push around Boulevardes and Goldwings like they are bicycles.  I can manage the the push required OK, but I live in dread of losing the balance and having the 1300 tip away or onto me.

Push your bike around from opposite the side stand with it down, hence if you loose it back on to the stand

I have had a couple of people ask me where to send gifts or cards to Teela for her birthday.

You can simply send it to my work:

Teela Stinton
Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety Toowoomba
222 Anzac Avenue
Toowoomba, 4350, QLD

And she is turning 27 for those who don't know

Even tipsy has turned up a week early so that he won't be late (he has had no technology out at Tara)

Leo and I are still chuckling, so tipsy is sitting out the back having a quiet beer enjoying some civilization till he goes home toomorrow

Well here is the Report!

Today was a huge Success! this has been months in the making, with OzSTOC members involved and putting themselves out left right and centre to make it happen! Special thanks have to go to Dale Mclean, Abe, Tony, ST2UP, Pocket Stocker, Wild Rose, for really going that extra mile! there is no way i can repay you all for the efforts you have put into this.

I will let the photos tell the Story, and for those wanting Video, go back two posts and you will find the youtube videos!

Teela spent the morning out with her best freind getting all beauty treated up! they where due at the house at 12pm, but where a little late, as you can see by the photos below you can see we waited patiently....

some more than others

But then they arrived, Teela Blindfolded walking down the driveway.....

and she got the shock of her life with us all there, job done...almost....

there was some strange bloke there, we think he was a blow in uncle or something...

then it was onto the major award! My sister and my brother in law had slipped away while teela was saying hello to everyone and we bagpiped in the bike so teela could not hear the bike till she saw it!

Here is my brother in law bringing it in

Needless to say teela was all smiles and totally lost for words!!

Our daughter wanted her to take it for a ride on the spot, and the bike fits perfectly!

Even a few willing converts wanting to take a ride!

We rolled straight into cake, that was made by the way who is making our wedding cake!

needless to say, i have a mountain of leave passes with all this,

Graham left her Stranded Teela purple Kwakka rolled into view,
A gleeful audience knew it was coming and there were many more than a few,
But Teela surprise is revealed the tension will be increased,
And now the blindfold's off, the purple present is released!
Only an Iron man could sustain such a ruse, with transport, labour and farkles,
Helped by an ozSTOC team, that purple Kwakka motorsickel really sparkles!!!!!!

The Bike Learner's five questions in Queensland is applicable if you have a current car licence.
The stupidity is, you can't get a bike licence without a car one, which all riders agree is back-to-front.
Car drivers would benefit from having ridden a bike, but since that's not going to happen, they should at least allow those who choose to ride first, sit all the written questions first and then learn to ride.
I might add, the car licence exam is "multiple guess" so you have to really try to fail it.

I completed the Q-ride course to get my QLD license and that later changed to allow me to ride the CX500s (LAMS changes), but I had left it too long before I went higher than the LAMS, so had to do another Q-ride course.
The instructor is a bike fanatic and you have a choice of any of his bikes if you don't have your own for the test.
What I liked about the Q-ride course is that you would sit down and watch a video (or a person riding a bike) and point out the potential risks to the instructor. Then you went out on the bikes and the instructor would set up many courses using withes hats and get you to do slalom riding, quick stops, emergency stops, very slow riding and the like. I have been riding for a long time but still gained some very useful tuition. The good thing is that once you pass the days tests you immediately have your license.

You are also instructed on defensive riding techniques during the video and expected to use them while riding. Our instructor would watch our eyes (thru our mirrors) and body actions to check if we were following these techniques!

Although she looked slightly terrified when the instructor said "you did do well last week are going to do a few laps of the block, and then we might try a proper quiet road"

I am by no means enjoying this.....  :rofl

That's true. Just allow Teela time to develop her confidence at her own pace and I'm sure she'll be fine.

Marissa has been riding for 20 months now, and in that time has probably done in excess of 10,000 k's or more. She still rides very "cautiously", and I admit there are times when I think to myself "you should have enough confidence by now to go just a little bit quicker in the twisty stuff?".

But her safety will always be more important than how quick she can take a bend in the road, and I'm just thrilled that my wife wants to go out and ride bikes with me!

Well this afternoon turned into blue skys so we suited up and out we went, Teela was pretty nervous as she has not ridden the purple beast at all, so we did a few laps up and down the street, just getting used to gears and getting some confidence...

after about 4 or 5 laps away we went, advancing to doing a couple of blocks, avoiding roundabouts for the moment as teela is just not confident with them, we took alot of the outer roads around toowoomba being 70-80km zones, we only had one indecent where teela stopped at a T intersection and tapped the front brake a touch to hard and we had our first drop! and well i am now investigating oggy nobs for the bike....

but Teela handled it perfectly, she didn't try and save it she just slowed it down to minimize any marks and scratches (only a couple, will buff out no worries), massive thumbs up to the young bloke in the car behind us who pulled up and was out of the car to help faster than i could get off the bike, all his mates sat in the car and looked at him....

To her credit she hopped straight back on and kept going, she was more worried about the marks on the bike and her instructor saying "i told you so on using the front brake"

We toured around for about 30-40 mins, and than it was off to maccas for a well earned coffee!

and guess what, we are getting up tomorrow morning and heading out again!

to sum up, she is handing the bike really well, we are ironing out a few gear changes, and turning circles, but she has great awareness in traffic, and was chipping me for reminding her to turn her indicator off!

Don't feel too bad Teela.   I dropped my ST on the first day that I had it, and therefore have a little battle scar on the right side muffler & tip-over cover.

Post by: Couch on September 29, 2013, 09:34:21 AM
I also have a slight battle scar on my right side tip over cover! I dropped it somewhat gently in very loose gravel while stationary, I leaned the bike to the right to put it in to first gear and just as I started to let the clutch out the rear wheel spun on the gravel and down she went. The only other time was in first gear (again) at idle speed, I rode over a very small patch of grass that appeared to be solid, but unbeknown to me there was about six inches of soft mud under the surface.............bugger, down on the right side again! Up until that point I was known on the OzSToc site as Tazzie Baz, however Diesel thought a more appropriate name might be "COUCH"...........bugger!!

This all happened ages ago, but I've recently ordered a new tip over cover from the States and it's on the way! :grin

Well we took another small run of 30km today out to Highfields and back to Toowoomba this morning, continuing Teelas training.

Today was her first taste of highway and open road (in a small dose) she was very comfortable and confident today, although her U-turns need some work, she tends to ride around in a half moon rather than turn the half circle, but that is practice practice practice....

We found the Campfire Cafe (Google http://goo.gl/maps/5JGp0 (http://goo.gl/maps/5JGp0)) today which does supurb Coffee and bacon and eggs, and with it being family owned made for an excellent experience to go with Teela's beaming smile that she is in control!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the comments, Graham keeps me well informed with what you are all up to and your very kind words and encouragement.

Its great to be out on the bike on my own again. Now just to get my opens so Graham can lead as i hate it when he picks places and i have no idea on direction.

The drop didnt faze me, it was bound to happen and i knew it would. But he was right i just jumped straight back on the horses back. I like making mistakes as I'm able to pick what I'm doing wrong and I can only improve. I made the fatal mistake of grabbing the front brake coming to a T intersection, My instructor is going to laugh at me and say seeeeeee what have i been telling you.  :nahnah

Luckily they are awesome guys down at the wreckers. Hes pushed me out of my comfort zone but not out of my capabilities. Really great guy.

The biker chik shirt is getting its use and fitting better and better with every week  :thumbsup

Well look forward to riding with you all sooner or later. Take care  :KissBlow

Well we have added the first "Farkle" to Teela's bike, i said you should post up about it! she looked at me with that wife look of "Why" so i am doing it for her lol

From Johnny Appleseed we bought a 1" ball that bolt to the clutch plate, added a short arm and an X-Grip and Ta Da! we have a phone mount, as she like myself uses it as a GPS, Music Player and the like.

Well Teela had a great day today, completed her first 100km trip...

Teela is very chuffed when we where having a break in Kingsthorpe

She needs to do more technical work on turning corners at intersections and the like, she keeps looking where she does not want to go, instead of riding through the turn so to speak.

She was  little hoppy on gears, but i discovered i had adjusted the clutch when i had taken it off and put it back on  :think1 but i am sure it wasn't me

Here is a short video of her riding today, sorry it is a little shaky, i was taken with my iPhone mounted behind my screen.

My wife learnt to ride on a virago 250. I agree that they are a very easy bike to control because they are light and small. Very low seat position so will suit vertically challenged riders.

Allan

Having gone through that only 2 years ago.

I had a Virago 250.

These are the bees knees for learning. Very easy and light to move about.

I think you can pick them up pretty cheap.

Just a little update, I have been trying not to bombard this.

Teela and i have been getting out doing 80-100km trips with her bike, Today was the first day that I felt comfortable that she able to ride by herself (not that i am going to let her just yet lol)

She is following her corners nicely, traffic does not really bother her (Accept the odd 3 trailer semi, but they bother me to), We have been doing main highway riding mixing in smaller back roads that are in not as good condition, she is really getting to know her bike well too, working on her road postion handling the gusts of wind from trucks and the like.

The one thing we have discovered about the ZZR 250 is lots of vibration, i think it is the way the bike is though.

Here is a shot i took of us in Pittsworth today midway through our little trip today (http://goo.gl/maps/Ntx9f (http://goo.gl/maps/Ntx9f)), i was taking her out to coffee, but the bloody coffee shop i was bragging about was closed!

Just an Update on Teela and bike and license  :thumb

Teela is ready to go and get her license we are just finding the time now to do it, we have been riding quite a bit now and she is more than capable  :grin in fact getting frustrated she has to wait for me to go out on the bike now haha  :rofl :rofl

We have done some Farkling to the ZZR 250

Added a 12V USB plug to the bike

also put a ram mount Ball on the Handlebars so we can put her phone in the centre so it gets it away from the screen

And that straw poll shows the future of motorcycling isn't very bright.  It will take real commitment and a lot of generous supporters for a young person to get their licence.  Maybe that's the gummint's plan (reaches for tinfoil hat).

Well it has been a while between drinks on this thread, Teela today covered 320km which is her biggest day so far of riding, we took in the Kilcoy-Esk Road, and the Esk-Hampton road which is full of twisties, and Teela handled it all beautifully, she is turning into quite a decent rider, the slow corners are her only sticking point, but all is going well!

Well we have been busy with Teela's bike, as now she is licensed and using it more Teela had found a few things bothering her, being lent over to far, wind buffet all the usual stuff

So we installed GPX clip ons which has raised the bars up 50mm, and has allowed us to add bar end weights to take out some vibration,  cables adjusted, we have also added a "Double Bubble" screen from Eagle Screens, bother of which have made a huge difference!

Before (on Bottom) and After (on Top) photos.....

and Teela 's little ZZR 250 is now organised to do some bigger km's on

Big thank you to Alistair & Jess Acworth from AA Motorcycle Repairs, they did a fantastic job, re routing cables making sure i had done everything right and delivering the bike right back to our door.
