All good advise above Streak.
The most important question to ask is, "What does Teela want" in terms of cruiser style or naked, sport etc.
I would like to find her some thing a little more upright ride position though, I think with her back better riding position is important
Don't get a 250. You WILL regret it shortly afterwards.True that...I was constantly looking for an extra gear... The Virago sat beautifully on the road cruising at 80KPH, though...
Hi All,
Well after our trip, one thing has come our of it, Teela wants to get her license......and well we need a bike to learn on, she has ridden before, but quite some time ago.
I don't have much of a budget $3,000 to buy a little learner for her, I have been looking at the Honda CB400 or the Suzuki GS500 maybe.
Thoughts and options about what I should be hunting around for? Taking not account Teela is not very tall
Interesting though here is a link to Qld learner approved bikes:

Cheers

We bought a Yamaha Virago 250 for my wife to learn on. She's not very tall as well. This was the perfect bike for her to learn on. Has the gear ratio to be able to do highway work, 100k's no problem.
It's about giving the learner confidence. if you go to big too soon you can create problems for the learner. The Virago sold to another learner.
Pauline now has a Yamaha Vstar 650 and a Suzuki Boulevard C50T (800)
That would be my recommendation.
I've not met Teela but if she is at all vertically challenged, she may struggle with the seat height. I'm told that the seat height is higher than the 650 that my son has. Other than that I would still be wary. A bike shop should give them more than that if it's as good as he says it is.
Hey Streak
I think first you need to find out what style of riding position Teela is comfortable with, Cruiser, Tourer, sports???
Slip down to the local bike shops and sit on the different types and styles. When Teela finds one she's comfy with then you know what style to go in search of. A lot of Women go for the cruiser style.
If you buy a 250 she will quickly grow out of it. Maybe a 400??? Ish
How are you going to keep it a secret when Teela reads the forum????
Why purple?????, the kawasaki red is great.
Why not give her the 1100 once you've taken delivery of your new 1300
Hey Tony, I reckon we could ride this to Toowoomba. Watcha reckon? :wink1Even Better - I could hook the Patrol up to me motorbike trailer and we can do a roadtrip up to Toowoomba with it ( Hope he has his grog cupboard stocked) :wink1 :grin :beer :runyay

Hey Tony, if you want to swing by my place and pick me up, I'll go with ya.................. :oCool - Your just past upper Mongolia arent you? :p
Mate - I am happy to do that for you. I can fit it into a set of 4 days off so let me know. I am always keen for a road trip :thumbs
Looks good. :thumbsup
Question: is Teela going to be carting you around to RTEs on the back of this thing? I reckon it's only fair, you know, sharing the load and all. :wink1 :wink1
Just sayin. :beer
It's a 250 !!!! Australia Post ??
Aust. Post is as useful a boobs on a bull, long story.
Whats the latest Streak on "Operation Purple"
Yes, Skips correct. You'll have to get a current QLD roadworthy to get it registered. Well done Streak. Teela will be wrapped!
Streak, if somone/s could get it up the New England to Steveo, he and Wendy may get it to me.....then Pockey and I get it to Stanthorpe etc.......if that helps and if your happy for others to ride the beast.
Cheers
I could ride it down and get Abe to double me back up (1st time as bitch in about 30 years :rofl)
may take maore than 2 hours to ride 160k's though :rofl :rofl
BB?
I will give Dale the same advice that I give my BB. :grin hop in, sit down, hang on and enjoy the ride.:grin :grin
And as the bumper sticker says Gas, Grass or Arse as nobody rides for free. Lol :rofl

Ram Mounts With X Grip (when we work out how the heck and where the heck we are going to put it)
Purple/Back Butterfly Tank Pad
12V Charging Plug (Once again Working out a location is going to be a trick)
Ram Mounts With X Grip (when we work out how the heck and where the heck we are going to put it)
I would suggest getting a Brake/Clutch Reservoir Cover Mount from http://www.southerninsight.com.au/product.php?id_product=123 (http://www.southerninsight.com.au/product.php?id_product=123)
I actually bought the mount that goes in the for stem hole of the bike, but fitting it is a problem, it does not seem to fit, even though it is rated to go into a ZZR 250
(http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/ozstoc/photo_zps69828fcf.png)
I use one of these on my ST11 - you have to cut the rubber cone off at the right length and be sure to use the correct washer (several sizes supplied with it). Works well for me.
If anyone who has one didn't get the instructions (WHAT? - read the instructions!!!!), here is a link to them:
http://www.rammount.com/Portals/0/Skins/NationalProducts/pdf/ramb342uassemblyweb.pdf (http://www.rammount.com/Portals/0/Skins/NationalProducts/pdf/ramb342uassemblyweb.pdf)
They are self explanatory.
Of course, the bike must have a hole in the nut that holds the top triple clamp to the steering stem. I have removed the plastic housing from my ST11 bars because I have 30mm risers plus BMW R100RT handlebars - higher and further back, and the housing wouldn't fit without severe re-modelling.

This is supposed to be the picture from above, but it has inserted a link, not the pick - you'll know what I mean without inserting the pic again. I hope.
If this is the bike, then it won't fit without replacing the top yoke/ triple clamp nut. There are places that will sell replacement nuts that will do the job. Once you know the size, these people should be able to help out:

Anyone having trouble, I would encourage to follow the instructions step by step and follow the maxim "measure twice, cut once".
This is a uTube vid of the process:

Love your work Dave, may have to bring mine down to you......is your fridge full and a can you have a roast on ??? :thumbs
Well done, Abe.
So when's the Grand Opening with Jumping Castle and Free Baloon rides
Face painting is what I am after
Teela would have to take to your dropped pie with a brush cutter to clear her canvas, seriously a bike shop with a clean coffee shop looking through glass to see your bike worked on has a appeal to many people, not quit as visceral as doing it yourself though. :beerWell done, Abe.

Nice...a that tinted screen really looks good
Well the bike here! Tony, ST2UP & Jean arrived safe and sound with the precious cargo on board, we have dropped it off at the bike shop for a New type and a Road Worthy, Willd Rose (Leo) even came along for a look as he will be looking after the bike until "Delivery"
we also made a nice discovery that the motorcycle instructor who does the lessons also owns an ST1100! so bonus!
then we went to the Southern Hotel for lunch, where we where all fed and watered nicely!

It was great to see everyone, and a huge thank you to the 1,350km worth of driving that tony did to bring me the bike, and for Chris and Jean for coming along and keeping Tony Company!
wouldn't it be funny after all this Teela didn't want a bike but was " just saying" :|||| :cuss

The only thing I have not been able to work out is how to get her to go and get her Learners before she gets the bike...Tell her it'll be incase something happens while out and about, and she'll need to get it back home
Don't forget the big PURPLE Ribbon

No personalised plates??
Well done, Abe.

videos please!
I can't wait to see the surprise on Teela's face :grin
What a fantastic job by a great group of people. When is the big day?
Come on Streak. WHEN is the big presentation?? We're all hanging out for this now after weeks of build-up!
Gah! 4 more weeks!
The Big Day is not until the Surprise Birthday Party 31st of August
The bike is going to be at Wild Rose (Leo) to get the last of the work done to it:
Ram Mount
12V Plug
Bike Grips
Wash and Detail for presentation on the day
Two weeks and counting down!
How are you going with getting Teela to get her Learners license "in case something comes up one day while we're out"?
Dunno about you Leo, but I found climbing off the 1300 and then wheeling that around was like pushing a bicycle. There's not much of it.

The guys in bike shops amaze me. They push around Boulevardes and Goldwings like they are bicycles. I can manage the the push required OK, but I live in dread of losing the balance and having the 1300 tip away or onto me.
:rofl :rofl
That had you thinking on your feet.
How much longer do you think you can keep this a secret when half the cat is out of the bag?
:rofl :rofl
:eek :eek :eek :eek
That was close :thumb
How's the heart condition? Don't worry she was economical with the truth first. Does that matter???????
He's certainly a dodgy dealer. :grin
How many weeks to go to keep inventing stories? (and having to rope in half Toowoomba to back up the cover story...) :popcorn
Will she be riding it to Inverell? I guess that's asking too much in too short a time.
So, Inverell is your "OZSTOC" party??? (naked and hand cuffed, to a power pole in the main street) I'll try and keep the rat bags at bay (hehehe):grin :grin :crackup :rofl
I'll be worried Streak if I was you,.
Thanks Diesel for your emails of possible "things" for Streak.
Youse guys will scare him off! He'll call in sick.

Only 21Hrs hours to go :thumb ZZR250 all clean waiting for pickup :thumbs
Can't wait. How's the nerves going Streak :grin
Oh right I'd forgotten all about this... it's been going on for Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long

In the old days, used engine oil ws a good fence line regulator, now its frowned upon somewhat
love the pipes coming in (wish I could play as well)
Wait... you telling me she didn't have to ride to get her licence???
Well Teela has her learner license! 5/5 for the questions, booked in for her first lesson at 7am on Thursday morning!
Teela came home saying "i got through, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear! and did basic cornering", she was running late, but she was buzzing :thumb
Excellent :clap:hatwave :hatwave :hatwave
I am by no means enjoying this..... :rofl

Most of us have seen Marissa Lane's progression from the quarter litre class to now as she confidently pilots her vfr800 on long trips , twisties etc..
I'm sure Teela will be no different...... Enjoy!!
:runyay :runyay :runyay :grin
It sounds like everything is coming along nicely (even got the first drop out of the way) keep it up and enjoy :thumbsup

Don't feel too bad Teela. I dropped my ST on the first day that I had it, and therefore have a little battle scar on the right side muffler & tip-over cover.
Having gone through that only 2 years ago.
I had a Virago 250.
These are the bees knees for learning. Very easy and light to move about.
I think you can pick them up pretty cheap.
Is Teela riding to Ballarat?
Girl power :hatwave soon it will be FarRides for Teela while Streak stays at home with the kids :nahnah
Pockey :p
Glad to read of the progress. It's been a long time since the last report.
BTW- who left that Beemer in the shed? Only temporary, I would hope! :-(((
I seriously wouldn't be riding today if I had to have a co rider on my L's
