Title: black smoke
Post by: royst1100 on April 22, 2012, 08:36:48 PM
im thinking the STeed may be running rich. a friend was behind me recently and said smelt rich with black smoke emitting from the pipes. plugs do not last long, black and sooty

ive put a K&N fitter on and modified stock pipes. a small misfire i think but so minor cannot track down. just put delkevic pipes, still bit sooty when i pulled out the baffles. more power  but still smells a bit rich. i havent replaced fuel filter for quite some time as ive found it hard to get them. team moto never has em when i go over there.

anyonelse had this problem and how did you fix it

Black smoke is usually a sign of incomplete combustion. I would be checking the air intake to make sure enough oxygen is getting to the cylinders.

Cheers, Shaun

Do you have the foam liner fitted to your K&N, if so remove it. You have restricted to airflow too much. This has been a continuing problem over on the STOC Forum.

Definitely make sure that foam sleeve is not on the filter. And make sure the filter is not over oiled, as it only has the be very lightly done. Both of these conditions would restrict air intake and make it run rich.  Also have a look to see if the choke is going fully off.

ST11s do seem to run rich on the overrun. Mine still does it even though I leaned the pilot screws a bit and put in new jet needles and needle jets.  A dyno run a few years back had shown the bike was rich midrange.  Runs cripser but fuel economy unchanged when cruising along but better when I get stuck into the throttle.
