i think i know the answer but here goes. i bought an ex WA police bike( st1100 1999). apparently brand new tyre, damp road tooo much beens! well yunow what happens. anyway the question is this happened about 6 years ago, should i trust the tyers or just buy newis
if new ?- by all accounts the metzeler z8 seems good on a st1100. does this apply for 2up long distance touring. goinng from brissy-wagga-newcastle and maybe bundaberg back to brissy in 6 weeks time
regards royce

The following piece is an opinion and should not be taken as a factual or scientific account, please always consult your doctor should pain persist. Now ...
rubber, like most people, goes off with age :-X
the rubber gets harder with age, so it will:
last longer,
give a harsher ride,
crack easier,
grip less.
It is illegal to sell tyres older than 10 years in Australia.

i don't know, but my bridge stones are wearing just fine, had them on for around the 6-7 thousand km mark and they are looking good

Metzeler don't list the Z8 in the rear size for the 1100, but they do list the Z6 in the 1100 sizes.
It is possible to use a 1300-sized rear on an 1100 - I recently discovered that my 1100 has a Z6 rear 170/60/17. I've not really tested the handling and have not ridden an 1100 with the specified tyre sizes, but it seems to handle OK. I will replace it with a correct sized tyre though, already got some BT023's lined up.

I just checked the Aussie Metzeler site and find nothing to suit the 1100 except maybe the 160/60 ZR 17 or the 170/60 Zr 17, only 17 inch sizes, no 18 inch for the front. http://www.metzeler.com.au/shop/category/roadtec-z8-interact (http://www.metzeler.com.au/shop/category/roadtec-z8-interact)
Now, saying that, I found an off shore International site, if not at least European with sizes for both 1100 and 1300 models

The US Site has them

Neither link lists the 160/70/17 rear though, unless my eyes are playing tricks on me! :o :crazy

My fault, I saw the front tyres listed and.........didn't look further

I ride on used tyres all the time. Their new when I buy em, but straight away become used and I have never had a problem :rofl

I have run many different brands of ST13 size tyres on the ST11 with no issues. The bike is slightly lower to the ground, a bit more upright on the sidestand and a few more revs at the same road speed. It seems our choice of 160/70 rears is becoming less and less. The BMW120LT used the same rear as us, as do a few harley models, so they should still be available in some brands for a while.

Yeah we basically have the Avons, Bridgestones or maybe the Metzeler Z6 if they actually exist! As long as a tyre is available I'm not too bothered, any of those would do me. At a push I would use the ST1300-sized rear again.

:wht11 py
Well I put the PR3 180/55 ZR 17 on my 1100 and it went damn well on the Rally trip.
I definitely cant complain with both front and rear PR3's best money I have ever spent
