Title: Retrieve a Spyder
Post by: Gadget on May 26, 2019, 03:15:58 PM
The inspection and test ride by Beau was a big :thumbsup, so on Wednesday I'm flying to Cairns to stay the night and be picked up Thursday Morning to go to Mareeba to pick up the Spyder.

https://www.bikesales.com.au/bikes/details/2014-can-am-spyder-rt-ltd-se6-my15/SSE-AD-6012375/?Cr=2&psq=(And.Service.Bikesales._.(C.Make.Can-Am._.Model.Spyder%20RT%20LTD%20SE6.))&pso=0&pss=Premium (https://www.bikesales.com.au/bikes/details/2014-can-am-spyder-rt-ltd-se6-my15/SSE-AD-6012375/?Cr=2&psq=(And.Service.Bikesales._.(C.Make.Can-Am._.Model.Spyder%20RT%20LTD%20SE6.))&pso=0&pss=Premium)

I will change the rego over in Mareeba and then pack the Spyder for the the big trip home

My plan at this stage is to ride to Townsville Thursday and overnight there, before riding to Rocky on Friday (hopefully catching up with John and Kate in Mackay, and then riding from Rocky to Brisbane on Saturday.

This spot should go live, some time on Thursday morning.

We have to go to Cairns in August for the father-in-law's 80th, and after Japan last month, and this trip to fetch the Spyder, and the purchase price, I might be pushing it.

However, the thought has crossed my mind. Several times. :grin

Gary I like the lights close to the ground, and the Can-Am topbox circle.
How different does it feel from the Daytona, I don't think you'll ride it home as hard as BEEstY, and I wonder if theres any drag from the rear..
I'll lQQk for your ride report..  enjoy your trip.. :thumbs  :clap

It's a little softer in the suspension, but the Baja-ron sway bars and shock adjusters mean the body roll is about the same as beeSTy. Adjustable suspension on the rear is good.

I found out to get out into ECO mode, hold the mode button for 2 seconds.

The light output needs improvement. Low bean has good cutoff but dim. High beam creates a spot of light in the middle of the road and too close to the bike.

Also came with a Garmin Zumo 590, 2 Sena SMH10 attached to Shoei helmets, and an SM10 hard wired in the top box.

I played with EC0 on BEEstY on the way to/fro Balranald. I noticed it put an up arrow when best to change up gears, and I think it tightens up the suspension a little..

Cairns:
- Lousy nights sleep due to every conceivable type of road noise.
- Good breakfast
- Hot

Cairns to Townsville:
- Very hot (29 °C maximum 85 %RH)
- Lots of people asking about the bike.
- Lots of returned waves.
- Lots of roadworks, stopped leaning back on the back rest.
- Lots of 80 km/h zones.
- My first sighting of a Cassowary in the wild as it casually strolled across the road.
- The realisation that I don't have to worry about the tyres 'squaring off' on long rides.
 - Finally sorting out the Bluetooth set up, so I can take and make phone calls, hear the Garmin, and the bike sound system.
- Lunch Stop Mission Beach
- Rest break Cardwell and photos

- 'The Ville' Casino for dinner, consisting of nice Pizzas and 'donut fries' desert,

I also learned in Cairns, not to accidentally turn on the handle bar warmers at full bore, when releasing the Park Brake.

When the ambient temperature is 27 °C, it takes sure a while for them to cool off again.

It's starting to cool off as I head south, so I've closed the front vents on the jacket and put the thermal liner back in.

Today's ride was sedate and mostly pleasant.

Started out in Townsville at 24 °C but still high humidity on a heavily overcast day. The cloud cover remained all day.

I'd turned on the fuel monitor app in the Garmin, and from the start or nagged me to find somewhere to refuel as the distance was too far for one tank (distance set for a conservative 350 km to 26 litre tank). I'd always planned on refueling at Bowen, so I wasn't worried, but did find what should have been a useful tool, very annoying, because it sometimes took 3 to 4 attempts to clear the message.

On and off for the whole trip there were light misty showers, not enough to stop for wets, and it felt like only the windscreen and visor were getting wet.

As I approached Bowen the temperature dropped quickly to 22 and then 20, with very strong wind gusts.

As I pulled into Bowen, I'd missed the turn off to MacDonalds and I waved down a Postie and asked for directions. Of course, in the middle of the road we had to discuss the Spyder for 5 or 10 minutes before continuing to lunch.

Just after I ordered my meal, I received a message from Kate letting me know the C/NQ OzSTOC flag was out front and the shed door open. That made finding the place easy when I arrived.

During a very relaxed feed at McDonald's and a refuel at the Caltex next door, the thermal liner went in. I'm glad I did, as the temperature quickly dropped again, to 18 °C and in spots 17 °C.

The ride to John and Kate was uneventful and I was pleasantly surprised when Kate was walking up the driveway to greet me as I arrived, and guided me and the Spyder to the Shed.

After a pleasant afternoon chatting to Kate, John returned from work and we all took a look at the Spyder (I've got to come up with a name) and John and Kate tried it for size and comfort. An offer of taking it for a ride was made but respectfully declined. Maybe when they head south later in the year.

Kate had prepared a beautiful pasta and sauce, so we elected to stay in and eat. This allowed for more chin wagging and catching up.

As John has to head off to work in the micro wee hours, we said farewell before bed.

Next stop tomorrow is Rocky at my Brother's place, except he'll be coaching Basketball until midnight. With a maximum predicted of 19 °C in Rocky tomorrow, I think I'm going to appreciate the handlebar warmers.

Thanks John and Kate for the wonderful warm and welcoming hospitality. :kissblow

One pucker moment when a 4x4 and 26 foot caravan decided I needed to test the brakes by turning across in front of me with 400 metres to go.

I quizzed Johnnyyted about tyres when looking at his beast in Balranald (ie. whether they were normal car tyres etc.).  He said Spyder issue their own tyres and they weren't cheap.  Not sure on what mileage you get out of them.

Pete not sure on the cost yet , but as per owners manual the tyres are Directional made by Kenda (?) specific for Can-Am and are VIN registered to vehicles when installed and have some sort of Can-Am warranty. I'm sure Gadget will have more info on this as he has done more research than I.
Fuel range when Gary rode BEEstY down was about the same as STranglers
On the Balranald RTE my fuel usage was inline with STroppy's

Coming back from Cairns, I pushed my luck on one tank and had to fill up in St Lawrence. I'd traveled 348 km before I stopped.

In a 26 litre tank, I put in just over 22 litres. But as I was putting in ULP 91 RON, not the recommended 95 RON I didn't brim it as I normally would.

I haven't looked at tyres yet as they are still in good condition only having done 19,000 km.

The rear was replaced with a 'V' rated Toyo before I bought it, and I'm not sure that was a good idea. It lets go really easy in wet conditions.

Saw one of these Spyders earlier today.

Older couple on board with both having open face lime green (see below) helmets. Colour of the trike was black with lime green pin striping (???) to match the helmets. Also towing what looked like a camper trailer.
