Title: Ride report: Wall to wall ride 2019
Post by: Gadget on July 24, 2019, 07:52:48 PM
I'm thinking of doing it this year.

It's on the 14 Sep.

It's 3 years since the lat one, and this year is the 10th Anniversary.

Qld are adding an extra day this year with an added overnight in Ballina, which I think I'll skip, and ride straight to Tamworth via Warwick, with Sean.

Planning on coming back from Canberra on the Sunday and overnight in Port Macquarie, then home on the Monday.

Safely in Tamworth for the night.

Sean is riding on his ST1300.

Great to catch up with PC and NavGirl after a quick phone call just before I left Brisbane.

Thanks Pete for fixing the DC adapter for the CB. Great to have my ears on again.

We had a delay of about 1/2 hour due to a fire down to the road at the roadworks at Bolivia Hill. (The CB told me why the long delay.)

As Aussies do, we got chatting to the lady on the car behind us. A teacher in Tenterfield. She was trying to get home to get Dad who Mum was concerned might need to get to the hospital. Suddenly our delay seemed way less important.

Waved to a couple of Ambulances near Gyra, got a wave back. :hatwave

Now for a drink and feed.

Nice ride from Tamworth to Sydney today.

Started out at 6 °C this morning, reaching 28 °C at Singleton, before dropping back to 21 °C on The Putty Road, (Aragog has been introduced to the Putty Road).

Lunched at Grey Gums Café and refeuled at Windsor.

Checked into the Travelodge, and dinner at 6 at the Porterhouse Irish Pub.

Oh, and Aragog had an update to his livery before I left home. :grin

Couldn't sleep after 3 am, so got up at 5 am to refuel Aragog. It was 5°C.

First servo, no 95 RON, next servo the Garmin took me to, was a quiet suburban street, the next servo was closed, finally found an open BP with 95.

Packed Aragog ready to go.

Waited until 6:30 am to check out and wait for Sean.

Around 7:00 am, we were ready to go and it was 8°C.

The Garmin took me out via Majura Parkway, Sean went the way be knew, thinking it was faster and said he'd wait for me at the Border sign. When he got there he rang, and I was already crossing the Yass River on the Federal Highway. I hadn't seen any border signs. So I plodded along and just before the M7, Sean caught up.

The Temperature by now had reached 24 °C and it rose sharply from there until we got to Pennant Hills. As I pulled into the BP the Dash was showing 38 °C. The thermals which had seemed like a good idea in Canberra were causing an issue. So the lining came or of the jacket and all the vents opened.

A quick bite at the Maccas nearby, and a blast up the Newcastle freeway in quite heavy traffic. Stopped briefly at Beresfield BP for a wee walk and here I even removed the flouro vest to get more air flow.

That was the last stop until Rydges Port Macquarie.

Smoke in the air really thickened North of the Taree turnoff, with my eyes stinging badly.

Checked in, set up some water bottles to cool off for tomorrow, and went to refuel Aragog. According to the specs, he has a 26 litre tank.

He was a little thirsty.

Tomorrow's plan was for me to head home via Casino and lunch with Dad, and Sean to go straight up the coast and home to pick up his daughter from Ipswich by 3pm.

With all the fires and smoke, and a dodgy belly, I'm going to go straight up the coast and hope for a sea breeze of fresh air.

The view from the room at Rydges.

Port to home as a solo run.

Left at 6:00 am, in the driveway at home by 12:56 pm.

Loved all the new motorways, can't wait for the Ballina to Wollgoolga stretch to be opened. The roadworks and numpties driving at 20 under was tedious.

Left in 10 °C and fog, and then it quickly warmed to a really comfortable 22 °C until Wollgoolga, where it dropped back to 16 °C really quickly, and then climbed again to 28 °C by Wardell. It stayed around 26 to 28 °C for most of the way home.

When I stopped for fuel at Broadwater, I discovered Aragog had a bit of bad luck, and good luck. The mounting plate of both passenger arm rests had broken off. Both armrests had fallen between the seat and the pillion grab rails, looking as of they had been placed there. I still even have the 2 rubbers that go between the plates and the body work of the bike.

Now to rest.
