Well finally home from the work project in South Africa. What was to be a three month project turned into six months. The poor old steed sat in the garage totally alone, asked the missus to go into the garage regularly and have a chat with poor STan, as I'm sure he would be feeling quite neglected. She said she wouldn't as he probably wouldn't listen, just like me. Got home last night and first thing this morning (even before breakfast, which I made, and the other thing) I visited poor STan. Put the key in and turned, nothing, totally flat battery, not even a dash light. So STan is getting an intravenous charge overnight and hopefully he will have a heartbeat tomorrow.
Driving in South Africa is a learning curve, forget all the road rules, do whatever you feel like, drive as fast as you like and ignore red lights and stop signs and drive at least 30klm over the speed limit. Saw bike riders splitting lanes at 80klm per hr. No signals for lane changing or turning. Certainly makes you a defensive driver and aware at all times.
Would feel very unsafe as a bike rider there.

After 6 months, the battery will be knackered. Its best to connect to some sort of auto charger if going away for more than a month.

Hi Brock, was worried about the battery being knackered too. Charged it up and rode around local for a week or so, seems to be ok. Have just completed a 4,500klm ride over the last three weeks. Newcastle NSW to Whyalla SA to Adelaide SA to Melbourne VIC and back to Newcastle NSW. STan behaved flawlessly, hummed away on 12hr rides. the daily rides I performed were, 824klm, 860klm, 523klm, 1,018klm, 1024klm. Had a rest break every 2hrs, drank heaps of fluids (H2O, not the other kind). Was not fatigued from the rides, just temporary soreness mainly in right wrist and bottom which dissipated after a few minutes walking around. Not bad for a 68yr old on a 24yr old bike. Can appreciate those that rode long distances for the annual rally. They are truly a remarkable motorbike.
