About a month before Christmas, I noticed what looked like a tarnish build-up on the front sections of my exhaust pipes, apart from the yellowing of the pipes,

and after an exhaustive search for Barkeepers Friend, eventually bought a tin of it from Saaz :hatwave
This cleaned a huge amount, especially the yellowing around the welded parts, as per the photos:

but I was still left with what appeared to be spots of tarnish or something, which even the Barkeepers Friend couldn't shift.
I showed a couple of mates, one of whom suggested a very light wet & dry paper, but I thought it might leave scratches, so I let that one slide.
The other pal (my bike mechanic) offered an acidic cleaner called S-Weld Brite Wash, which got rid of the spots entirely with the aid of a plastic scourer, but also removed the gleam, which brought on a mild panic attack >:()
I tried the Barkeepers Friend again, but that didn't do much for it, so I then tried a stainless steel polish, which, as you can see, brought back the shine:

The black mark you can just see in the far left of the last photo is from my boots, but with a bit more polishing, I should be able to get that off too.

Another product which has a similar result is Purple Polish. It's Californian, available from Bursons Auto Shops. $20 for a bottle and you only need a dab.

Dick, it's called Mirrorfinish and I bought it from MCAS in Lidcombe last year just after I bought the ST.

Hi All, The best cleaner is Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink Cleaner available at most supermarkets or Bunnings.
Works a treat with very little effort, just make sure that the cloth you use has plenty of water on it so the sink cleaning powder turns into a paste.

Just an update, the polish did remove the black boot mark, but I also noticed whenever I stand on the centre stand and my foot touches the pipe, it leaves a black mark on the pipe as it must have done before, so I'm careful now where I put my foot.

Purple Polish was mentioned in a few threads over the years. My bottle lasted around 5 years and when I went to Bursons it had leapt from $20 to over $30 (around 350 ml IIRC). I went to SuperCheap Auto and found Alushine by Chemtech in 1 litre bottles for $25. It's great for all metals, but makes special mention of chrome. It does just as good a job with less effort.
It's well worth joining their "Club Plus". It costs $5 but you get a $5 credit soon after, and another one every couple of months if you've bought anything in the interim. I use the credit to grab my preferred oil if it's on special, and if not, an OEM oil filter. I've always got stock on hand when it's oil change time.

Steelo Soap Pads can be used on the exhaust pipes or any chrome for that matter. Use the old style steel wool pads which are softer than the chrome and therefore won't mark it, but never use the stainless steel pads which will scratch, or the plastic scourer pads which are impregnated with glass powder which will also scratch chrome.

Pete I used good ol' steel wool and a liquid hand soap on my chrome crash bars and aluminium adapters to remove the grunge and smooth out the edges. I also cleaned the pipes a bit. They came up a treat with a good shine. ++
