To help stave off the "home isolation madness" a construction project seemed in order...
Hmmm, what can I build? I had already constructed a work bench last year and I had an abundance of shelving (that I'd constructed when I first moved in) right around all three walls of my single car garage.
With a fridge, a freezer, a leather lift chair and a treadmill (not to mention numerous Boxes) also taking up valuable space I had to think small...
What about a small bench on wheels? It would give me somewhere to store our helmets and assorted gear when not being used and also offer somewhere to place tools and parts close at hand when I'm working on the ST...
Anyhow, without further ado, this is the result...

It came up better than expected and now I'm concerned I might get it dirty... :rofl

Nice :thumbs

Great idea for a project, and well executed. I'm afraid I have trouble banging two pieces of wood together, and envy those with good woodworking skills.

Looking good, Russ. :thumb

Very clever Russell, I'd be tempted to do someting like that myself, except I don't have any spare lengths of timber, I'm not as skillfull as Pete, and I have a couple old cupboards in the garage to store helmets and assorted bike gear.
I did take to opportunity to tidy up the work bench, it was caos with tools and parts chucked on there at the finish of one job and another, difficult to find various tools and bits. Now it's organised chaos.
I did come up with another problem, too many tools. I have collected (and lost) many over nearly 50 years, in a few sizes multiple sockets, spanners, and when my Dad and then older brother died, I inherited a few of theirs. Net result is I now, far more than I need. Two adult sons and one son-in-law aren't interested.
Before I get rid of some, don't think I'll throw 'em in the bin, anyone here want anything? Pick-up only, bring a beer when / if you you're interested.
I've only got one 10mm socket though.

:beer. Nice job.

I'm jealous of those who work with metal. It's hard to make mechanical bits out of timber Pete. :'(

Thanks for your kind words, all! :thumbs

I'm in the same boat, I inherited a collection of tools (and assorted other stuff) from my brother when he passed...
Much of his stuff is still in boxes as I had to bring it all back home from Tasmania where he lived. One of these days I'll get around to sorting it.
He loved his hobbies so I also have unbuilt RC models, 3D printers, computers etc etc...
I also have his Tesla mobility scooter (which may come in handy some day...and most likely the only Tesla I'll ever own... :whistle)
Oh, and the portable generator he used to charge the batteries on his scooter whilst out and about... :-++
I've managed to sell a few things such as his car, 2 motor scooters and his metal lathe...
Anyone in need of a 3D printer??? :fp

I'm jealous too...about the only thing I can make out of metal is the odd bracket from aluminium... :-[

Get a can of Estapol or other hard varnish, preferably two-pack, and paint the timber before you get it dirty.
Apart from protecting it from grease and oils, it brings out the grain nicely.
I've made similar timber units to mount my tools, like the bandsaw, electric handtools etc.

Cheers Biggles... :thumb
I was actually contemplating doing just that. At the very least I'll varnish the top and shelves...
I'm worried though If I make it too nice the wife will say it's too good for out in the garage and will want it in the kitchen... :rofl

Top job Russell.
If you painted it the colour of the ST it wouldn't suit the kitchen :idea

Cabots do a nice clear water based polyeurathane floor finish that I have used on a some wood projects. It dries quickly to a hard finish, is available in satin or full gloss, and brushes wash clean in water.

Now that's a thought... :rofl
I bought some touch-up paint for the ST last year and it cost me around $30 for 2 tiny bottles so I'm thinking the cost to paint my trolley may be a touch prohibitive... :fp :crackup

That sounds interesting...and I reckon I could squeeze in a ride to the nearest Bunnings for that...what a shame it's around 40ks away... :whistle :thumbs

Awesome work mate :clap :clap :clap

Thanks Dave! :Chocies

I got some Cabots (https://www.bunnings.com.au/cabot-s-1l-benchtop-clear-satin-timber-finish_p1520590/) clear finish yesterday so now I have to psyche myself up to apply it...
Have I told you all how much I hate painting???? :fp :|||| >:()
Oh, and I nearly choked on the price too... :eek :o

My project seems to be watching every youtube and netflix movie available. At least it doesnt cost much. (Tho I do seem to be nibbling on biscuits a lot)
-
I'm still working but I too seem to be doing a lot more nibbling at home.
-
I would like a job, but in the current climate as a 67 yr old I'm right in the high risk zone.

Weren't you fixin' stuff for the RAAF?

Yep, but the contract finished up in March (new planes, new contractor) I was made redundant in Dec.

Well, I've given it two coats of clear so fingers crossed that will be enough... :X

Awaiting pic of completed project :popcorn

Unfortunately almost every painted-on material will scratch under the right circumstances. The upside of the project is the wood doesn't discolour, and if it gets too bad, you can sand it back and repaint it back to new.
-
Cheers Bill! :thumbsup
I'm not too worried about it. The clear finish is more about stopping oil from soaking in and to stop my hot coffee cup leaving a ring on the surface. Being a satin finish it will probably be less inclined to show any scratches too.

Here you go, Kev... :thumbs
Gave it a final coat this arvo and I reckon that will do...

Just by way of random lock-down chatter, have you come across the spray cans of clear 2-pack? I used that to finish off my last project (my projects are few and far between) and so far it seems to behave as expected. This was a loungeroom project, not a shed project, so I haven't tried it for scratch-resistance (and I'll do something nasty to anyone who does) but it seems to resist surface dulling and general staining very well.
Bunnings used to stock a Dulux 2-pack spray but then they stopped. The story I got from staff was that they got sick of pranksters triggering the internal release just for fun. I eventually found an online craft supplier that sold it in both gloss and satin versions.

I must admit I haven't come across them, Steve...but then again, as I hate painting I don't usually browse the paint section.
I was actually thinking last night (dangerous I know) that if the top of my trolley gets too scratched I may very well just buy some cheap carpet from Bunnings and glue it on top...something like this: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ideal-diy-67cm-charcoal-oxford-ribbed-carpet-runner-linear-metre_p6620787 (https://www.bunnings.com.au/ideal-diy-67cm-charcoal-oxford-ribbed-carpet-runner-linear-metre_p6620787)
Cheers :beer

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. The carpet I mean, not the thinking (which is generally to be avoided at all costs).
I hate painting too. I'm a finicky perfectionist, and my skills don't match up to my expectations lol.

For the budget conscious, carpet tiles can be picked-up very cheaply: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/carpet-tiles-450-x-450-approx-500-available/352805875256?hash=item5224de6e38:g:Vb8AAOSwhHFdjkSN (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/carpet-tiles-450-x-450-approx-500-available/352805875256?hash=item5224de6e38:g:Vb8AAOSwhHFdjkSN)
You may even be able to justify the 120km round trip as essential travel.
If time is not a concern, post COVID, I could probably bring two or three (surplus to our needs) to an RTE at some stage. Wont be much cheaper though, as it'll cost a schooner of dark ale.
One of my isolation projects, cleaning out the garage, involves listing surplus items on eBay, some of you will be suprised what junk some people we pay $$ for, and it's easier (and cheaper) than putting them out for the hrad rubbish collection.
A set of old tyres under the house off the old EL Falcon. When I got some new tyres for Helen's EL many years back, kept the oldies as they were still in RW condition (thought they be good trailer tyres), 12 years later, I don't think I'll be using them, put 'em out for the hard rubbish collection, they would not take 'em ($40 charge - WTF), put 'em on eBay, got $40. That's an $80 turnaround in my favour, or two or three tanks of ULP, thanks very much.
-
Thanks for the offer, Michael!
Unfortunately carpet tiles aren't large enough as my trolley is 600mm X 500mm and carpet tiles seem to be 450 X 450 or 500 X 500...
That carpet runner I linked to is only around $15.00 a metre so all up I'd only be looking at $7.50 so that shouldn't break the bank..lol.
Re eBay, it's a bit harder to sell stuff out in the sticks as Melburnians don't seem to be willing to travel this far out.
I've actually had more luck with Facebook Market place, not that I use Facebook but Sue does...
I actually sold both my scooters through them and even bought my ST via it.
Best part is it's free unlike eBay... :whistle
Who said I'm not cheap??? :rofl
-
I decided to put the carpet on top of the work trolley last weekend.
Cost me a whole $7.50 from Bunnings.
It's held in place with double sided tape.
